Coming up on 20 years since a lower division team won the US Open Cup. As much as I love watching all of the rounds of the Open Cup, I don't ever see another lower side winning it all again (and I say that realizing that only a few years ago, FC Cincinnati made it to extra time in the semis). One of my favorite stories of the US Open Cup: The Rochester Raging Rhinos.
In 2017 USL FC Cincinnati made the semifinal, that is the closest they have been in recently. The Charleston Battery lost the final in 2008.
Back in the 90's, if your city had a USL team and not an MLS one, the majority of us soccer fans back then of course, getting a crack at an MLS city was a possibility. Soley because the sport of soccer offers the fans multiple competitions in a season. No other pro sport offers this to sports fans in our vast sporting culture. Then there is the thought of winning the double!
