In light of today the Cleveland Cavaliers' breaking the NBA record for consecutive losses in one season (24), I was wondering if anybody knows a) what the longest pure losing streak by an MLS team is (no wins or draws); and b) what is the longest non-winning streak is in MLS (no wins, only losses or draws)? I was just curious and don't know where to look up such a thing. I imagine the expansion Chivas team may have something to do with it, but who knows. Anyone with a memory of said team(s)?
A couple of years back, the Red Bulls lost for 3 straight months, but someone else will have to clarify that.
Climbing The Ladder is the go-to site for this sort of thing. Here's a link to the last time they looked at the winless streak(May of last year).
Wow. The Metrostars were #1 with the longest winless streak of 19 in the 1999 season, but the expansion RSL team was truly miserable, having the 2nd, the 3rd and the (tied for) 11th longest winless streaks all between 2005 and 2007. Boy, have they turned it around since.
Tied for 4th all time with a 13 game winless streak in 2009 (only 2 draws). Columbus also have had 13 game winless streaks, twice, in fact, in 1996 and 2006.
It's about time to visit this... Longest Winning Streak (incl. SO wins): 15 by L.A. Galaxy, from 7-Sep-1997 to 17-May-1998. Longest Winning Streak (excl. SO wins): 9 by Sporting K.C., from 2011-10-15 to 2012-04-19. Longest Losing Streak (incl. SO losses): 12 by New York RB, from 4-July-1999 to 5-Sep-1999. Longest Losing Streak (excl. SO losses): 10 by Real Salt Lake, from 2005-08-10 to 2005-10-05. By the way, N.E. Revs is probably on something very special this season: they won 5-straight from 26-Apr-2014 to 24-May-2014, then lost 7-straight from 31-May-2014 to 19-July-2014, for a combined Winning-Losing streak of 12 (& still counting). This has matched the longest such "Jekyll & Hyde" (or "Hyde & Jekyll") streak in MLS History, shared by 2 teams below. Real Salt Lake, in 2005 season: they won 2-straight from 2005-07-23 to 2005-08-06, then lost 10-straight from 2005-08-10 to 2005-10-05, for a combined Winning-Losing streak of 12 too. Sporting K.C., across 2011-2012 seasons: they won 9-straight from 2011-10-15 to 2012-04-19, then lost 3-straight from 2012-05-06 to 2012-05-13, for a combined Winning-Losing streak of 12 as well. Let us know, if there are any errors or omissions on the above...
More on Jekyll-Hyde (Straight Wins followed by Straight Losses) as well as Hyde-Jekyll (Straight Losses followed by Straight Wins) Streaks: (@FlashMan, @revsrock, @chapka, @Hachiko, @Knave.) Longest Hyde-Jekyll Streak (incl. SOs): 18 (3L-15W) by L.A. Galaxy, from 17-Aug-1997 to 17-May-1998. Longest Hyde-Jekyll Streak (excl. SOs): 10 (9L-1W) by Toronto FC, from 2012-03-17 to 2012-05-26. Longest Jekyll-Hyde Streak (incl. SOs): 16 (15W-1L) by L.A. Galaxy, from 7-Sep-1997 to 20-May-1998. Longest Jekyll-Hyde Streak (excl. SOs): 12 (5W-7L) by N.E. Revs, from 2014-04-26 to 2014-07-19 & counting... 12 (9W-3L) by Sporting K.C., from 2011-10-15 to 2012-05-13, 12 (2W-10L) by Real Salt Lake, from 2005-07-23 to 2005-10-05.
You could also call the longest losing streak a "hyding." Hahahaha! *dodges tomatoes thrown by other BigSoccer posters.*
Toronto FC started 2012 season 0-9-0, finished 5-21-8 (WLT).....Lease amount of wins goes to DC United last year 3 wins (3-24-7)
So there you go! NE Revs are now officially the Sole Proud Owner of the Precious Record for the Longest Winning-Losing Streak in MLS History (w/o Shoot-Outs) at 13 games, following the 1-2 home loss to Columbus Crew on July-25. 4 more straight losses will see them surpass the corresponding record with Shoot-outs included, currently held by L.A. Galaxy at 16 games, across 1997-98 seasons. Are the Revs up to the Tasks?
N.E. Revs' Record for the Longest Jekyll-Hyde (Winning-Losing) Streak in MLS History (w/o Shoot-Outs) now stood at 13 games (from 2014-04-26 to 2014-07-25), following the 3-0 home win over Colorado Rapids on July-30. The corresponding record with Shoot-outs included, is still held by L.A. Galaxy at 16 games (15W-1L), across 1997-98 seasons, from 7-Sep-1997 to 20-May-1998. ============================================================================== Now that the 8-game losing streak is over, if N.E. Revs manage to string a few more Straight Wins together, they will be able to challenge the Longest Hyde-Jekyll (Losing-Winning) Streak in MLS History as below as well: Longest Hyde-Jekyll Streak (incl. SOs): 18 (3L-15W) by L.A. Galaxy, from 17-Aug-1997 to 17-May-1998. Longest Hyde-Jekyll Streak (excl. SOs): 10 (9L-1W) by Toronto FC, from 2012-03-17 to 2012-05-26. ============================================================================== Are the Revs up to the Tasks again?
The Revs were on course to match the longest Hyde~Jekyll streak set by Toronto in 2011~12, but they allowed NYRB to ruin it on Aug~2 despite having taken the lead. http://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/ma...-red-bulls-vs-new-england-revolution/boxscore They have now disappointed us twice in a week, for not extending the Jekyll~Hyde or Hyde~Jekyll Streaks... What a "disappointing" season so far...
Actually this appears to be wrong, according to the "2015 MLS Facts & Records Book" (a cool thing which I never knew existed): http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/sites/g/files/g211536/f/201503/2015_FARB_web.pdf The record is actually RSL with 18 winless over 2005-2006. I looked over the NY 1999 season results: http://www.newyorkredbulls.com/sche..._type=all&op=Search&form_id=mls_schedule_form And they secured a win over Tampa Bay on 1999/06/30, which ended only a 6-game winless streak. That was followed by a 12-game winless streak which ended with a victory over Columbus on 1999/9/12. I bring this up because the Quakes now hold the #2 position in the winless streak sweepstakes with 16 games. Go us!
Wait, you guys didn't win at the end of last season? For some reason I thought you did and the Rapids 15 game streak was the only active one of note. The NY win was a Shootout win, so it depends on how you want to count it if the record is 18 or 19.
No, we lost to Chivas USA... on the last day of Chivas' existence. So you guys are at 15 now? Brothers in suckage! Interesting point about the shootout, but IMHO a victory is a victory. Anyways we'll see if it makes a difference depending on how long our streaks continue.
you know how bad that team was as it neared its final game???? that has to count as some type of major embarrassment--losing to Chivas in their last game ever. Or perhaps we could spin it and say the Quakes were being good guys by giving Chivas a hollywood movie happy ending?
By the way, this wonderful blog was last updated on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Any idea what happened subsequently?
unless there's a team of people working on a blog, it's usually the extraordinary efforts of just one person. After a while a person just cant keep up anymore. I imagine that attrition just took its hold. I remember in the early days of MLS there was a wonderful blog called "Setting the Table", however it ceased to exist also. Great blogs die and in the meantime stuff like this still continues..... soccerreform.us
And his column (as Elijah Miller) on MLSsoccer.com (again, among my favorites) was last updated on Apr 25, 2012: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/climbing-the-ladder What happened since then?
