USA’s 5-2 victory over Japan to win the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament garnered a 15.2 overnight rating, destroying both the 8.6 overnight rating for the USA-Japan final in 2011 and blowing past the 13.3 overnight for the USA-China final in 1999.
But there are many many many more than there were in 1999. And they are much much bigger. I have no stats to back it up, but I know I am right. For those who know about these things... how do overnight ratings relate to the actual ratings?
for me, this makes the '99 final even more impressive. women's soccer is SO much more mainstream now. the response in '99 was truly historic...and on american soil.
This is the only place reporting it so far that I have seen http://sportstvratings.com/usa-japa...s-record-breaking-15-2-overnight-rating/3024/
I found it. http://sportstvratings.com/usa-japa...s-record-breaking-15-2-overnight-rating/3024/ This is huge. Oh, and by way of comparison, the last game of the NBA finals this year, the most-watched one since Jordan retired, did a 15.9. http://www.sbnation.com/2015/6/17/8...-tv-ratings-abc-nielsen-warriors-vs-cavaliers This is HUGE!
For that to happen, the marketing has to improve. And that means focusing on a key reality. Men support the USWNT - the fan base is likely majority male, a unique thing in women's sports. Men will go to NWSL games - if the quality of play and atmosphere are made to feel similar to the other professional sports that men back. If marketing continues to focus on 12-year-old girls, that is all who will support it. And, the marketing link has to tie in the emotions to the WWC. That is what the solid fan base knows.
10-18 year old girls is a pretty significant market. and someone has to take them to games. it's BOYS, not men who will make or break it.
in this generation, you can usually bump up a major game's tv rating about 50% to get a better idea of the amount of people watching. gotta consider all of the people watching from bars, parties and online streams.
http://www.tvmediainsights.com/forum/topic/sunday-70515/#post-260187 Topped out at 22.86 million (just for fox... not in spanish or online or bars or outdoor watch parties) Right around the US-Portugal game if memory serves.
Fantastic. Maybe this is crazy to expect, but any idea of the tv ratings in the UK/Germany/France/Japan for the Final and knockout matches?
They're reporting now it averaged over 25 million viewers. (John Ourand, Sports Business Journal; also sportstvratings.com)
I agree with this. As an adult male I think women's soccer is pretty cool. However, I can't imagine myself admitting to watching women's soccer as a teenager. Ah, the conundrum of being a youth!
i believe this is changing, tho the evidence is pretty anecdotal. surely this WWC victory was a huge push.
