Icarus on Netflix. I had no idea what I was getting into when my wife picked this documenrary. It starts as a relatively light hearted doc about a moderately successful amateur cyclist trying to see how doping would effect his performance and turns into a geopolitical thriller when he befriends the top Russian "anti-doping" lab head. Please watch this movie.

I listened to an interview with the guys who made that.

They had all sorts of trouble making it.

It sounded fascinating...then I forgot about it.

    Thanks for the reminder.

Lost in Translation is the best. I kind of see a lot of my own ideas for my movie already there. Can't tell if that's a good thing as I have a framework or a bad thing because it's already been done (although mine has plenty of difference).

Regardless of the story, I love Sofia Coppola's camerawork in this. Beautiful visual style, I love long cuts, and the usage of silence is amazing.

Are those shots due to Sophia or the cinematographer?

It's a mix of both, but lingering on them is something that a director would be in charge of. I also know that Sophia's signature in films is lots of window shots and those work really well in the tone of this film and in the aesthetic as well.

That movie is beautifully shot, but is boring as hell, gratuitous shots of Scarlett Johansson's butt notwithstanding.
It was an amazing commercial success, bringing in about $120 million for a $4 million budget.

I get that. I guess I'm one of those weird people who likes those boring bits as long as I feel like there's a reason for it.

Not quite Kubrick, but highly enjoyable.

    Watch in good health.

There are many, many great lines in that movie.

My Glow watching partner doesn't want to watch more Glow right now so turned on Raw. WWE is a parody of itself now isn't it. This is pretty dumb

This doesn't make sense. Why would you not watch GLOW?

Have been watching a lot of Isaac Arthur on Youtube lately. For those not familiar, from his webpage at Isaacarthur.net:

"Exploring science concepts, with an emphasis on futurism, space exploration, along with a healthy dose of science fiction".

Big launch and propulsion, nuclear fission/fusion, Dyson swarms, colonizing the solar system and beyond...

    Were you watching with Trump?

Maybe that is where he is found his inspiration for:
    SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCE
    FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRCCCCCCCCE

There is a section on interstellar warfare, after all.

I looked a couple of videos. They are well done.

I finally watched Repo Man after all that you guys have said about it and I have to be honest: I didn't like it. Maybe because it wasn't meant for me, but there wasn't really much in it that I enjoyed and the pacing was so weird that there wasn't much that I understood. All the characters are either asholes or annoying. It kind of felt like the person who made this film wanted to touch on all of these different social commentaries, but couldn't decide which one they specifically wanted to focus on so they decided to just throw it all in with no explanation.

As I said, it probably wasn't meant for me. Harry Dean Stanton was good though.

    You failed, @willydonc!

Seriously though, because you didnt live through the Reagan years some of the context may be lost on you @Jiggly_333. Don’t give up on it. Just realize that you might have to grow into it?

Next up: After Hours. Scorsese’s finest.

That is certainly not surprising, but it is too bad.
    We had hopes for you!

It is a movie that may not resonate as well to all.
(I know quite a few people my own age who do like it.
Of course, I am no longer friends with them. ;)
One must have standards, after all :whistling:
My mom hated it when it first came out and I made her watch it.)

The pacing is weird, I agree.
The music is awesome (if you like punk).
The social commentaries were pretty dead on, as a reflection of many of the obsessions ("generic" food, televangelists, Reaganomics, UFOs, etc.) of the day.
