I watched Mr. Jones at the Chicago International Film Festival on Sunday, I ended up sitting next to the screenwriter Andrea Chalupa. Film will be going into wide release in the next few months, I highly recommend it. Fascinating true story that touches on Orwell, Hitler and Stalin, it's about Stalins manufactured famine in Ukraine. Turns out New York Times pultizer prize winning author Walter Duranty was a real piece of shit.
We just saw "Joker" It is the darkest, dreariest, most joyless, most soul crushing movie I have seen in a long time, at least for a major, major release (as soul crushing as Requim for a Dream). It is not a movie for kids. It is not a movie for anyone. My partner said it was the best movie she has seen in years. I may agree, but I have to think about it. Joaquin Phoenix was pretty great. It was a combination of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, with a bit The Mechanic (Phoenix probably weighed 125 pounds in the movie). I just read it is already the highest grossing R-rated movie ever.
I find that about most things with Jeremy Irons. Watch "Dead Ringers," where he plays identical twin gynecologists. Terrific movie. Really, most of his movies up until the Lion King are great and his portrayal of Klaus von Bulow in "Reversal of Fortune" is probably my favorite, although Kafka is pretty damned great (although I have not watched it many years). He was such a fantastic actor, but has made some really awful films lately.
Saw the new Harlequin trailer and am sorely tempted to go back to the theater and see Joker later today. Anyone see it?
Wow elegantly stated and part of me is angry for falling asleep to prisoner of Azkaban and the other half is glad I didn't go see it immediately after a light-hearted comedy
just started watching Glee for the first time. it's not bad. a little earnest, but not bad. if it moves 10% closer to Pitch Perfect over time, it'll be excellent.
