This is my analysis after this disappointing loss. That 2nd half highlighted the problems that Canada was trying to hide up until this game. Marc Collat, Haiti manager exploited them, tons of credit to this man who was managing in League 1.

Starting with the 3 goals we conceded
1st goal: Keeper Borjan was livid with good reason but he share some blame here. Godhino who wasn’t aware of his surrounding, was sloppy on back passing to Borjan who should have communicated better with his defender. He also had the chance to clear the ball but seemed to be trying to play the ball. That was a terrible giveaway to Haiti.

2nd Goal: That was a reckless challenge by Godhino, 100% unnecessary. Starting Godhino instead of Brault-Guillard was absolutely puzzling. He doesn’t fit the style and physicality required to be effective against Haiti, which was made obvious to anyone who saw their match against Costa Rica.

3rd Goal: We need to shut this BS down. Alphonso Davies is NOT a LB. He got beat on that 3rd goal and they made it look easy. Vancouver Whitecaps started this BS. Despite Bayern allegedly wanting to continue this nonsense, Herdman should have known better than continuing this awful trend. Morgan wasn’t the best optimal choice but he should have started due to his experience (CCL) and his spatial awareness. Davies is at his most effective as a winger, Bayern, hopefully saw that too.

    Godhino
2 unforgiveable mistakes on the first 2 goals when Canada was actually defending well up until that point. You have to think that Hearts will reconsider keeping him around after he threaten them to walk over not getting all the minutes as RB. It’s obvious he still have lots to learn with his uneven performance in Scotland. Threatening to walk on Hearts and then playing like this might have sealed his fate. He certainly lost RB to Zachary Brault-Guillard who's younger than Godhino (20) but a better defender with a more imposing physic. Was he being saved for Mexico? If so, that's stupid dfrom Herdman

    Pressure
Something others haven’t touched on the Voyageurs Forum and social medias, Pressure! This is a major question that got answered tonight. Most guys on the team are capable of handling the pressure to perform under tough circumstances and push forward, which is what the midfield and the forwards did. However, we witnessed the defense corps completely unravel in the second half and that is a major problem. Time for Kamal Miller to get more opportunities as CB, commit to our natural LB and let Brault-Guillard have RB on lock down.

    Outcoached & Wrong lineup
Oddly enough, Haiti’s formation showed respect for Canada’s attack. That 4-4-2 was designed to conceded possession and hit Canada on the counterattack on the flanks. The strategy Haiti used was the same they did to Costa Rica when they won the group. Unfortunately, replicating that strategy was taking advantage a our crucial weakness at defense, the flanks
    [IMG]

Godhino and Davies were targeted by Haiti. How on earth didn’t Herdman see that coming from a mile away? As shown above, Starting Davies at LB and Godhino at RB were unforgiveable mistakes. Godhino nor Davies have the experience and physicality to stop a very physical Haitian attack. Brault-Guillard was the guy who should have started at RB, he’s big, athletic, skilled and more defense minded than Godhino. Davies had no business at LB, Morgan should have got the start as the only natural LB on the team. Brault-Guillard doesn’t make those 2 mistakes on the right, Morgan doesn’t beat like an amateur on the left.

    Substitutions
Herdman completely lost control of this game and was utterly incapable of adjusting.

1-64th minute / Osorio -->Kaye That was a good sub. The widening gaps at midfield were getting obvious and Osorio needed to be replaced…However, Collat adjusted and brought in Etienne Jr. who took advantage of Canada pressing forward. Etienne caused the formation to stretch again and with diagonal passes, Haiti was able to target the open spaces around the RB and LB. Haiti scored at the 70th and 76th minutes.

Tottenham used the same strategy in the 2nd leg of the Champions League semifinals versus Ajax. That led to an unlikely comeback and like Ajax coach, Herdman had no answer for it.

2-80th minute /Cavallini -->Morgan. This move allowed Morgan to play LB and move Davies to the wing at the 80th minutes. First of all, that’s 20 minutes too late. You needed at least 30 minutes of Davies playing wing while securing the left flank which could have prevented the 3rd goal. Second, taking out Cavallini hurt Canada’s ability to match Haitian physical defense and win the aerial battles that are crucial when trailing and trying to tie the game. Hoillett who was mostly forgettable should have been subbed out instead.

3-No sub??? Herdman either froze or foolishly was thinking about overtime. David was gased. This is where you bring in Liam Millar who plays a similar brand of football than Davies which could have created space for the offense

    Arrogance
During the press conference, Collat made fun of Herdman who went on record saying that "he didn’t understand how Haiti beat Costa Rica".

Really??? I don’t know where this arrogance came from but he needs to get his act together. His completely mismanagement of this game, lack of preparation for Haiti (the idiot said so publicly) contributed to this loss. There’s no excuses here, this is a game we were expected to win and Herdman needs to respect his opponents. Collat absolutely outcoached Herdman, and like Costa Rica & Canada just witnessed, Haiti is not to be taken lightly. They are well coached this time around.

Herdman is no tactical genius, nothing new there but I question is ability to listen to his assistants and if those assistants have the acumen for this level, nothing against Mauro Biello (former MTL Impact manager).

Going forward for League of Nation
    • Davies is not a LB, this needs to stop

    • No more players being used out of position

    • Cordova (Chile) & Adekugbe (Norway) are your only choices at LB with Morgan being #3

    • RB is Brault-Guillard to lose. Godhino should play teams like Cuba, not the US

    • Young Cornelius has the potential to be a good CB. Not convinced that Vancouver is the right place for him. Manjekar James (Denmark) is the starting CB with Henry. Cornelius should be the one being rotated. James is the best CB we have.

    • Attack and midfield is the best I’ve seen for this team, hoping Hutchinson stays for the tournament if Eustaquio is still hurt. Hucthinson and Arfield bring the offensive side of the pitch to a whole new level.
Unfortunately, defense will dictate how far Canada goes in CNL. The only backline that makes sense is this

    Cordova--------James--------Henry-------Brault-Guillard

Hopefully the Canadian coach makes the type of adjustments you suggest. Looking past opponents like Haiti and even Costa Rica thinking he was preparing for a semi final with Mexico that isn’t happening is shockingly arrogant. Canada looked really impressive but coaching might hold you back

This is a really weird take. IDK if it's right or wrong, but it is weird. My understanding is that Canada's got archetypes just like here.

They've got hockey bros, Saskatchewan country bumpkins, cosmopolitan urbanites, Cascadian hippies, French wannabes, etc.

Manjrekar James is Canada's best CB option, and at 25 year old, he managed just five Danish Superliga starts in the full 2018-19 season. Other than that it was reserve matches and a loan to the second tier. I think you could name a couple dozen American CBs, perhaps more, who would walk into Canada's starting lineup. Just a massive problem at senior level for Canada that doesn't look much better at U20 or U17 level. Fullback doesn't appear to be much better either although Brault-Guillard may have promise.

James was acquired by FC Midtjylland, D1 Denmark from his former club Vasas, D2 Hungary.

They immediately loaned him to D2 Danish club Fredericia. He impressed and was recalled by Midtjylland, hence the 5 games and they like his game.

In my opinion, Doneil Henry has peaked, that's the best we'll see from him and I'm not sure that's good enough against stronger teams, James is better and wi be recalled by Canada for the League of Nation.

Cornelius is a good CB and was named to Gold Cup best XI. Vancouver in MLS isn't a good fit in my opinion, they don't play him enough and he should be tested. Montreal would be ideal for him under Remi Garde or going to a tougher league.

The whole "Davies as a Left-back" was brought to you by the Vancouver Whitecaps...I have no faith whatsoever in that club developmental system. Guys like Adekudbe (our #1 LB), Chung, Verhoeven bailed on them. Adekugbe went to Norway, Chung (RB) to Germany, then signed with CPL Pacific and Verhoeven went to Pacific as well in CPL.

The next generation of defenders will come from CPL. Canada always produced good defenders. It's just comical now that we're producing good offense and somehow have a gap in defense development. At CB, Gasparatto should get a look for the national team, he's a product of Rangers academy. Langwa (nickname is "Zoom") is one of the best LB in CPL right now. Halifax is playing solid defense and they will produce most of the next batch of defenders under Stephen Hart

Herdman was hired to do for the men's side what he did for the Women's side. The women's program was just as bad as the man (I'm talking Canada losing 9-0 bad) and Herdman rebuilt the entire program from the ground up and established a pathway to the national team. On the women's side, we can track the best talent in the country and have them converge to the NT while nurturing their talent. It's under Herdman that Canada rised to #5 and claimed 2 Bronze Olympics medals.

If he can replicate that on the men's side (which isn't even close to the women's side), good things are coming for Canada. He's also the National Director and all levels from U14 to senior level are under his responsibility. He wants all NT to play the same way so when they arrive at the senior level, they already know the system, like he did for the women. That's why his assistant Mauro Biello is the head coach of the U23 National team.

He's a "thinking outside the box" manager. Sport science, psychology and OCD about details is huge for him and we have to admit that he did changed the culture on the men's side. He's good at hiding/compensating for the flaws on his side and finding opponents flaws and exploiting them. That would be his main strength.

That being said, he's no genius tactician. Like I posted earlier, he did adjust when he saw Haiti going after his fullbacks so he made the necessary change to tighten the midfield and keep possession as the only mean to protect a weak defense. But man, Marc Collat adjustment was on point and Haiti scored 2 goals within 6-8 minutes and closed the game, concacaf style. He had no answers after that.

Hoping that it was a humbling experience for him and that he will learn from this.

Depends on which team shows up. The 6-0 against Trinidad, or the 1-0 against Curacao. But that's not the focus right now.

Already eliminated, Canada can begin preparations for Nations League. The US still has a Gold Cup to (hopefully) win.

The Canadian women have qualified for every World Cup since 1995 and finished 4th in 2003 long before John Herdman became the coach.

Their lowest FIFA ranking ever was #13.

    What are you talking about?

Not so sure about that. Justin is a world leader in public disrespects. The football team seems to be following his lead.

The Canadian women must have benefited significantly from Title XI in the US and from being salaried to play in NWSL.

Sure but who & where were they being developed?

Also, looking at the 2012 Olympics that saw the women claim their bronze medal and took it to the USWNT, only 2 players were in NSWL at the time, not even Sinclair.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:2012_Summer_Olympics_Canada_women's_football_team_roster

Sure, it increased afterwards but as more leagues emerged in Europe, they go overseas too like Beckie at Manchester City, Huitema at PSG, Buchanan in Lyon etc...

I'm not minimizing the impact of them having played in NSWL had but it's truly Herdman's work here. That's a general consensus.

The challenges facing the Canadian women versus the Canadian men is apples to oranges. The women's programs in central America and the Caribbean don't get any funding. I remember when FC Dallas had to ask for donations via facebook/twitter so a T&T women's national team could eat while training in the US prior to a tournament. I digress...……………..

Anyway, Canada is the 8th ranked men's team in CONCACAF based on FIFA rankings. They made the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup, but not the semifinals. [3 of the top 4 ranked teams in CONCACAF made the semis.]

So Canada actually sorta finished where you'd expect Canada to finish.

What Canada has going for it is a lot of youth, particularly in the attacking positions. They're investing and building, investing and building, investing and building. Yes they have work to do if they want to get to the World Cup. Their problem of course is that they can't get over the hump, and are constantly seeded badly in WCQing draws. Like last time when they were drawn in a 4th round group with both Mexico and Honduras. This loss against Haiti probably means more of the same in the upcoming WCQing draw. Its not just the loss against Haiti, its losing a chance to beat another good CONCACAF team in the semis. Beating Martinique and Cuba, the teams they're supposed to beat, really doesn't help.

They NEED good results in the League of Nations...…………………

Will they get over the hump? I don't know. But they're working at it.

What I don't understand is folks coming on this thread and rubbing their noses in this latest disappointment. What is the point exactly? Is the US is such good shape that folks look down their noses at other programs? A little humility would do us a lot of good...……………...
