Canada could be unexpected contenders for the upcoming CONCACAF U20s if they are able to get the band together -- Davies, Tabla, Miller, Busti, Okello etc. Not that they'd be the very top contender, it would still be Mexico and the US at the top, but it's quite possible they could be in the mix.

Q & A with Canadian Premier League president Paul Beirne

    Important statement was:
Q; There will be an assumption that the CPL is a feeder-league to teams like the Vancouver Whitecaps, Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and other MLS teams. Is that how you see it?

PB: We will be Canada’s top professional level of play. It will start at a certain level and it’s going to proceed to grow on a yearly basis. We’ve seen that in other leagues that have started from scratch in other nations like Australia (2005), Japan (1992), Korea (1983), USA (1996). All of them have created a newer league in the last 20 or so years and all of them have started at a certain level and improved every year. And none of those countries have missed World Cup qualifying since they created their domestic league.*

*(except Japan in 1994 & the US for 2018)

We endeavour to do the same thing for Canada. We’re not a development league for any league, but we are a development league for Canadian players and if they move on to a better situation for them somewhere else in the world, then perfect. But as we grow I think we’ll find more players will stay in Canada because it will be a viable place to earn your living.

Soccer in Canada is like a sleeping giant. And look out… in the next 10 years you won’t recognize it.

I love how a topic entitled "What is the problem with Canada" has become the de facto Team Canada news thread.

It's great - keeps me updated on the game up north.

The League of Ireland is 39th out of 55 in the UEFA coefficients for the last five complete seasons, and 37th if you take out 2013-2014, which happens when 2018-2019 starts. Yesterday the Champions League and Europa League Preliminary Round qualifiers started.

He's definately not on the national team depth chart, it does show the progression in Canadian Soccer when players like him can get signed in Europe breaking some myths about the state of Canadian soccer as USL being the preferred choice for a chance at making MLS one day (this has been said may times)

Reality is that Europe will always be the #1 choice. With the Canadian Premier League starting in 2019, more players will look at CPL, L1O, PLSQ and CIS ahead of USL as the path will be a more straightforward to get to pro level

    To be determined......................:)
USL seems like a great path to MLS right now.

By the way, FCD youngster Adonijah Reid is having a breakout season at loan at Ottawa this year.

Scored a hat-trick this past weekend, and was named USL player of the week.

I think FCD will probably promote him to the first team next season, and find a way to offload Tesho Akindele (who's been disappointing since his strong rookie campaign).

I'm very happy about Reid's career going well. We're really heavily cheering him and glad he's doing well. Yeah, Akindele hasn't been great for the national team either and has fallen way back the chart. We'd need a string of injuries to be forced to recall him.

USL is a good path to MLS mostly if you're from one of the 3 MLS academy system. They are notorious to ignore those who aren't from their system while MLS doesn't draft from Canadian D3 and CIS.

Those 3 academies only captures a fraction of the talent in Canada and they had spectacular misses like Liam Millar who was playing right under TFC nose for years, same for Cyle Larin. So it's a huge myth that the best Canadian talent goes into MLS Academies. None MLS academies have produced quality players that plays overseas and have an impact on our national team. Alphonso Davies was in Edmonton before Vancouver. Whitecaps came close to miss him as he clearly has the talent to play in Europe academies

Montreal and Vancouver shutting down their USL team made things even harder on Canadian players. They are getting tougher to like as they make more decisions like this.

Now Canadians players have a clearer path to pro soccer. CPL will initially draft from CIS and D3. It's no longer a given that MLS will have access to best Canadian players out there, in sheer odds, CPL are more likely to get their hands on them first. Sigma FC who's notorious at developing good players, are already being targeted for affiliation deals from CPL teams.

Over time, the CSA wants the USSF out of it's pyramid. They already moved on Ontario PDL teams by forcing the in League 1 Ontario except for Thunder Bay. As alternatives arises, temasek won't be sanctioned in USSF leagues. CPL II will force TFC II to leave USL.

He's gotta outperform the three GenAd winger/forwards that FCD has in the pipeline if he wants playing time. That's Atuahene, Twumasi, and Reid.

If not, he'll be playing for FCD's new (hopefully) USL team next season.

As it is, Atuahene and Twumasi haven't been with the FCD first team as they didn't have any foreign player slots open. But the departure of Nedyalkov opened one up, and Twumasi has filled it. So that's more competition there for the FCD attacking youngsters.

I suspect he will, if given a fair chance. You claim Reid is having a breakout season, but he's listed with only 3 goals, 0 assists. I'm not sure thats so great. I also saw him play rather recently, and he was basically standing on the wing waiting for his teammates to pass him the ball. At which point, he was trying to cut inside to take long shots instead of making smart plays with the ball that help his team. Nothing against this Reid guy, but he's not real competition for Ferreira, from what I've seen.

He has more than 3 goals. I know he scored goals previously, and scored a hat-trick this past weekend.

Reid is still only 18, and is definitely still raw. But he has a lot of physical tools that make him an attractive youngster to work with. Whether he develops or not is to be determined. He's also Generation Adidas so there's an incentive for Dallas to keep him around............................

Reid and Ferreira are pretty differrent types of players. Maybe its Reid versus Bryan Reynolds that would be the competition.

The USL website and transfermarkt both list him with 3 goals, 0 assists.

Ferreira is a LW (along with ability to play as a striker), Akindele's a LW, Reid's a LW. Seems like they would all be competing for the same spot.

Reynolds is a CF, although FC Dallas is trying to do their best to ruin his development.

You've been telling us for 1-2 years that you think Ferreira is the best '00 in country. If so, why would you suggest he play in USL as an 18 year old? The best '00 in the country isn't good enough for MLS at 18?

    The article also says this

So given that he has fallen out of favor in Turkey, and FC Dallas could really use a good MLS-proven scorer like Larin, what would be a reasonable amount for him?

That's utterly false. The manager said he was very pleased with Larin and he doesn't want to come back either. Besiktas keeps him

I do wonder if (and when) we might see him in the PL or Bundesliga. Hopefully within a few years. I think he can excel in Turkey. Though Besiktas is a big club and will want big names. But if he can hang tight with them, he has a shot.
