While not along the normal theme of this thread, it is while I'm there for MLS Cup ... Anyone familiar with the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles? If so, would love to chat over PM as I have a few logistical questions. Will be in LA for MLS Cup and found out Medeski Martin & Wood will be playing there that Friday night. Anyone else going to be there?
One of these days I'm going to go to an MLS Cup. Too close to the end of the semester to go this time though. If I were going, I'd be all over that show though.
Groundation November 2nd, 2008 Roseland Theater Portland, OR Another really, really good reggae show from Groundation. Good opening band too: A funk band from California - Breakestra.
Sound Tribe Sector 9 / Count Bass D 07 November 2008 Alabama Theatre Birmingham, Alabama and then we headed over to the official afterparty... Eliot Lipp / Pnuma Trio 07 November 2008 Zydeco Birmingham, Alabama That was a late night last night. When I left a bit after 3am, Pnuma Trio had maybe only been on stage 45 minutes to an hour.
Stormcrow Amber Asylum Asunder Corrupted November 8 2008 924 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA San Francisco Bay Area death metal, neo-classical, doom metal (respectively) head up Corrupted, a sludge metal group from Japan. The place was packed. And it was freaking awesome. And freaking loud.
Nov. 17 - Subterranean, Chicago Bishop Allen Republic Tigers Electric Owls Electric Owls was weird. I do like his music... one song especially, "Magic Show." He seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't have that much of a stage presence. He comes out and says, "Hi, I'm Andy. We're Electric Owls." Then he proceeds to play music all by himself with just a guitar and drums etc. on a track he starts from a laptop. The sound guy didn't help him on the aforementioned song. That's for sure. Strangest thing... he sang Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely." I didn't get it. Republic Tigers were great. A good sound, fun show. This is who I came to see. Very rich sound. Even their sound test was fun. Big disappointment: They didn't play "Give Arm to Socket." Though it seems like that was the only song they didn't play. Enjoyed it a lot. Bishop Allen. They're ok. I like them, but I wasn't feeling it that night. They were energetic. The singer's voice is good... but the show just wasn't that great. Felt like they should have been opening for Republic Tigers, not the other way around. We didn't stay for the whole thing, and I don't really feel like I missed anything.
Hey how was that show?! I was going to see them last week but the show was sold out. Let me know what you thought. ________ I just got back from seeing Blues Traveler. .......................................Crystal Ballroom .......................................Nov 23, 2008 .......................................Portland, OR
They pretty much played all new stuff. And I mean like a new album next spring new not just from the last one according to what they said. Personally, I've seen them many times over the last 15 years and enjoyed the newest twist to the sound. Didn't see many around that didn't agree.
Jack Johnson and Dave Mathews Waikiki Shell Overall a weak show. Not that big a fan of either. Free tickets. I want to see either Bloc Party or Arctic Monkeys live next. Last best concert was Grandaddy at Slims in San Francsico.
I saw Broken Social Scene at the Sound Academy in Toronto last night. Sublime show, they played for 3 hours. Isaac Brock came out as well and they played two Modest Mouse songs - "The Good Times are Killing Me" and "Paper Thin Walls". Fcuking amazing!
