Sergio Romero at #ManchesterUnited:🎮 Games: 53 👐 Clean Sheets: 34🥅 Goal Conceded: 24Name us a better Number Two, we will wait. 👏#MUFC #FACup #MUNWOL pic.twitter.com/OZo1FyqfmH— Flashscore India 🇮🇳 (@Flashscore_IN) January 16, 2020 Despite what the club has supposedly claimed about bringing Henderson back next season, I just don't see him settling to be #2 behind Dave. Romero has indicated recently how much he loves it at the club and hope he'll sign a new contract.
Really would not be against selling Dave at this point: been an excellent servant of the club but he's clearly not the same player he was just a couple of seasons ago. And we do have enough talent waiting in the wings that we could consider shipping him off. Problem is, who's going to buy him or more to the point, who could afford him? He's the highest paid keeper in the game, plus he'd cost a pretty penny still in terms of the fee between both clubs. PSG would probably be the obvious candidate but they've got Navas for now and it's likely they can count on him for another season or 2. After that, it's hard to imagine any team who could afford him or even would be willing to commit big money for a fee plus his salary, under the current circumstances. All the teams who could afford him right now, have top keepers. The best opportunity to sell Dave was when he was still in negotiations over his new contract. As things stand now, I fear this opportunity has passed and we're pretty much stuck with him as he's really not a movable asset anymore.
Sergio Romero has been involved in a car crash near to Carrington. #mufc say he has suffered no injuries #mulive [mirror] pic.twitter.com/G4DRKbydzs— utdreport (@utdreport) January 20, 2020
Seeing the image of the wreck, it's amazing he made to training, much less doesn't appear to be hurt in any way. That is a huge blessing for him personally tbh.
Despite Romero's recent claims that he would like to remain at the club, there are reports suggesting that clubs such as Villareal and Real Sociedad have approached him. Keeping him appears to be relatively straightforward as it's just about getting the numbers right (in terms of a new contract). Really hope he stays: he's simply one of the very best #2s around. And at still just 32, he's got a few good years left. Grant's contract is also coming to a close this summer and it stands to reason he will be leaving. Don't know if he intends to keep on playing but he's a guy I wouldn't mind see coming back at some point in some kind of coaching/backroom capacity. The situation with those 2 might partially explain the signing of Bishop. Still kind of an odd one though since he's still very much a youth player and we're well stocked there already.
Does that truly make business sense to you? Considering we're not challenging for anything soon, and we have plenty of cheaper home grown keepers to blood? We don't need one of the top tier 2's right now. It would be different if we had a deep squad and were trying to challenge for domestic cups with squad depth. We also haven't ever had concerns with Dave's health.
It makes perfect sense to me since our other keepers either will not be satisfied with being a #2 who barely plays, except for domestic cup games and EL, if we're not in the CL (as is the case with Henderson) or are still at the stage in their development where they need actual games on a regular basis. We couldn't ask more from Romero, a guy who obviously accepts being a backup behind Dave and who wants to be at the club. If his financial requirements are reasonable, we most definitely need to keep him at the club, as far as I'm concerned. There is something to have a solid and reliable backup keeper, something I imagine can be easily be taken for granted having someone like Romero on our side.
He'd be sorely missed but I'd also love to see him do well at a bigger club. We need to be honest with ourselves in that we can no longer compete with the likes of Real Sociedad and Villarreal.
Something is brewing on the keeper front. I think we are willing to let Sergio go because he's clearly too good to be a backup and while he's still young for a keeper, he's the wrong age profile for continuity purposes. Ideally someone younger than Dave would be his understudy so that when he moves on, we can keep another keeper in the job for a long time. I suspect that Matej Kovar is gonna get a loan move and the keeper we just signed is going to be the U23 gk.
Another clean sheet yesterday (even if he had little to do): Mr Reliable, getting the job done when he's called upon.
We had one portugese Goalie too ? Mou raved about him but it seems he didnt progress well or am i missing something ?
Yeah couldnt remember his name and i thought he was named Ricardo or something. So what went wrong with him ? Mou IIRC called him a generational talent.
i don't know that anything went wrong with him, he got injured on loan iirc and is still with the club. he should be entering his early to mid 20s soon though so if it is going to happen for him it should be soon or time to move on
Worth stating also that Pereira is not helped by the fact that there is a lot of goalkeeping talent in his way at the club right now. And he's not going to want to come back and be 3rd choice either. A guy in his position has to stand out while on loan and he's had mixed results on that front (not good in Belgium and ok in Scotland). This coming season could be big for him and he has to hope he can make his mark wherever he goes. Surely that will factor into what the club does with him, since his contract expires next summer (they do have an option for another year though).
On deadline day, Everton offered to cover the entirety of Sergio Romero's £100,000-a-week wages as well a £2m loan fee to #mufc. United wanted to hold out for a £8m transfer fee. Romero was annoyed at the decision and feels he should be allowed to leave #mulive [@TheAthleticUK]— utdreport (@utdreport) October 12, 2020 Pretty good offer United really could/should have accepted. The MLS option appears to still be very much alive for him.
