I read that one theory why we haven't seen intelligent life yet is because any intelligent life killed themselves off. Thats even more depressing in the Nuclear Age. :(

On the other hand maybe they ARE out there but have become aware of us and are simply keeping really quiet like my wife does when the Jehovahs Witnesses come round.

Y'know, they're doing the alien version of staying behind the curtains and turning the TV off.

    Just a thought! :)

Again, maybe they weren't that smart?

Y'see, that's the thing about me... I'm always thinking of the other angle :)

We always try to project our human qualities on those theoretical alien races but it’s very likely that their motivations and perceptions are totally different from ours and, for the same reason, they might not be reachable with our technology.

There’s also a positive outlook: if Stephen Hawking was correct and an alien civilization might be dangerous to us, so maybe we should be glad we haven’t meet them yet.

If there are no others out there in the wild blue yonder that means there are no intelligent civilizations anywhere!

I like the idea that since computing power doubles every few years, we're all just a simulation of our super smart descendants.

When Mike Royko used to give out his "Gun Nut of the Year" awards, I remember one front-runner waking up at night and thinking there was a stranger prowling in his bedroom. So he grabbed a pistol and busted a cap in his morning wood.

Social media has taken the Darwin Awards to the next level. It's like a steroid for stupidity. The article concludes . . .

The number of deaths linked to YouTube daredevils has been rising. Last year Wu Yongning, who climbed dangerous skyscrapers, fell to his death filming a stunt. Pedro Ruiz, 26, was shot dead by his girlfriend in front of their three-year-old daughter. He was filming a stunt where he held a book in front of his chest, believing it would protect him against a bullet.

A number of deaths have also been linked to people attempting to take selfies to post on social media. In January, a 14-year-old boy was electrocuted in Croatia after he climbed on the roof of a train and attempted to take a selfie. One onlooker said his body “burned like a torch”. Last month, an Australian couple died after trying to pose for a selfie on a 30-metre wall in Portugal.

Iowa football player arrested after drunkenly mistaking police car for Uber
Accused of public intoxication, Brady Reiff, 22, a starting defensive tackle for the UI football team, approached a parked UI police cruiser on Iowa Avenue at about 2 a.m. and attempted to open the vehicle’s passenger door, according to UI police.
When asked what he was doing, police said Reiff asked for a ride home.
When asked if he thought the vehicle was an Uber, police said Reiff replied “Yes.”

At least he wasn't drinking and driving.

Sex toys cause closure of German airport terminal
    https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/vibrator-berlin-airport-intl/index.html

Various sex toys, including a vibrator, were mistaken for a bomb, causing a partial closure at Berlin's Schönefeld Airport on Tuesday.
Employees at the airport were conducting routine X-rays of luggage when they spotted "suspicious content in a luggage piece," according to the federal police in Berlin.
Because it was unclear from the initial scan what the bag contained, an alert was issued shortly before 11 a.m., resulting in the closure of the airport's D terminal while police investigated the suspicious items.

Is there no German Failure thread?

Him and me both. I Coach a pair of u12 teams and all spring I gave them the assignment of watching Germany and Tomas Muller in particular. Heretofore I have thought that Muller moved better off the ball than anyone else in the world, and I wanted them to watch him. (These kids don't watch a lot of soccer.). Needless to say, they've been riding me mercilessly about his abject play and Germany's early departure.

    Sigh.

How the hell does this even happen in Germany? There's a sex toy shop in the Frankfurt airport FFS.

Maybe there's an exchange program where TSA people are working in Germany?

Nah. Baverian Monitor would have posted that in the American People Failure thread.
