There is no one-size-fits-all answer to Americans playing in Europe ... Can someone place this link on every YA and US thread so we can watch the usual suspects, or fools as Stevie D pretty much calls them, freak. Insecurity?Self loathing? In the US....hehe.

Good piece by Steve Davis! I get SO tired of the Euro Snobs and the USMNT supporting/MLS Hating Goofballs trashing American players for making professional decisions they don't like.
The insecurity, general ignorance and self loathing is both funny, and then sad to behold when you realize just how many folks think like this. I have said it early and often.....it's the kind of situation that is ripe for a self serving, manipulative, platitude preaching BS artist politician to take advantage of....and he did. Here is hoping it is time for a fight back.
While the suggestions of Keane and Villa are good, I can't see a compelling argument for any player other than Giovinco. In 2015 and 2016, Toronto's offense scored a total of 122 goals in MLS play. Giovinco had 43 goals and 35 assists. Combined, that's 64% of Toronto's scoring: over a third of the goals and assisting in almost half of the rest. Those are ridiculous numbers. Add to this that he's neither part of the over-30 club of big names (some of whom produce, others do not), nor is he a big name American or Canadian player who wants to live closer to home, and we see someone at the forefront of the current DP trend. Young foreign players expected to improve while they're here, who chose MLS over other high profile opportunities. Since the rule's creation, no DP signing has mattered this much.
