Campeones Cup, yes, please. Leagues Cup, ok, fine, but get a better logo. Regular season interleague matches that count? Pass.
I'm fairly sure that FIFA has some rules about this. There have been one-off exceptions -- that one Welsh team in the English professional leagues, if I remember correctly. But otherwise I'm pretty sure FIFA would put its foot firmly down.
Also, FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein has been playing in the Swiss leagues. And of course, there are some Canadian teams playing in MLS. But are there any examples of top domestic leagues merging? Can't see that happening.
I don't mind allowing smaller countries the chance to partner up if it enables a healthier top flight. It's hard to fund teams and player development in smaller and poorer nations. But mergers just to enable two strong leagues to grow stronger and (likely) leaner would be bad for football. The goal should be a the widest volume of clubs competing at the top flight as possible, not a shift toward fewer leagues that matter. I feel, anyhow.
Correct. However, Real Madrid's FO just went long on the concept that their basketball team, being so good in their eyes, dominating their league and Europe, their team should be welcomed into the NBA's Eastern Conference. I heard this during the recent Spain vs. Argentina hoops World Cup Grand Final. So this idea of professional teams playing from different nations in some other nation's domestic league is now on the rise in other sports. Does it have traction? Well, does a shift like this stand to profit all involved is the mega theme. If not the concept will go away.
3 Welsh teams...Swansea Cardiff and Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler Wrexham I’m 51% sure there’s a small town team in the northernmost part of England that is in the Scottish pyramid. Puerto Rico has had teams in US minor leagues off and on. I’ll just say it...scrap the Cup and just have a weekend for an MLS-MFL Challenge. Mexico has 20 teams in the top flight, right? Imagine 2 matches on Friday, 4 each on Saturday and Sunday, right before our football starts. It would be awesome. Score it like the Ryder Cup.
The Bundesliga and the DDR-Oberliga merged, but this idea isn't anything like that. Neither is MLB, for that matter, where the leagues had been operating in a combined cooperative system under the same laws with mostly identical rules for almost a century before they started interleague play.
Toronto Wolfpack plays in English rugby league. They make it work by basically playing all their away games in one away travel
Newport are in the league. Wrexham are non-league and have been for a few years. Methyr are still in the English system as well. You are thinking of Berwick who were in the Scottish league until last season ( I think) they are now in the Lowland Leagues or some such.
Well, the last time I started a game of football Manager in League 2, Wrexham were in it. . (I think. But they ARE a pro team in the English pyramid.)
Would the average Canadian sports fan know League and Union are different codes and do they show the World Cup on a proper channel. I've never understood why rugby union never took off in Canada, particularly with the French connection.[/QUOTE]
Only because I'm a dork: FC Vaduz (Lichtenstein/Switzerland), Derry City (Northern Ireland/Ireland), AS Monaco (Monaco/France), Swansea, Cardiff City (Wales/England), FC Andorra (Andorra/France), Wellington Phoenix (New Zealand/Australia) ... these are all higher league teams, there are examples at lower levels with teams from San Marino, Germany, Switzerland, England, etc. Also of note, teams from Antiqua, Bermuda and Puerto Rico have all played in USL.
In the 90s there were also plans to put California teams in the Mexican second division, but they got shot down by FIFA. If that goes through and you have an LA team and a San Francisco team establish themselves in Liga MX, it's hard for me to butterfly effect it as bad for US soccer, but who knows. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-08-11-sp-26095-story.html https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-top-soccer-club-threatened-to-move-to-mexico
