I've been interested in beetles for a long time now and I would love to hear about other people's interests in this legendary car!
I had '72 Super Beetle. I bought when it was about 15 yrs old. Rusty and suffered from viscosity. I never should h ave bought it but I was a stupid 20 yr old. BUT - I did love that little car...when I could get it to run. Looked just like this one.
the super beetle has a sort of 'pregnant' look to the front bonnet, which was only continued for a few more years.
I don't have a beetle, but I'm currently driving an 08 New Jetta SE 2.5. We just traded my 05 Golf GLS 2.0 for it. I miss her sooo much My husband drives an 05 GTi 1.8T. I love love love to drive it. It's soooo fun to drive. We also had an 2000 Jetta and 05 Golf GL (traded it due to transmission problem and got the GTi). I used to be active in VW scene, but anymore, since I got pregnant and gave birth. I still love VW though.
my first car was a '71 VW bug. yellow with a black convertible top. sometimes i wish i still had that little piece of crap. damn i loved that car.
My first car was a VW Beetle. I bought it for £1. If that sounds a little cheap I should perhaps point out that it only had half an engine, and a few other bits missing too. I wasn't too fussed as I was only 10 years old at the time, and bought it off a guy three doors down who'd bought it for spares. I originally offered £2 for it, but my dad insisted I haggle him down to £1. It was a cool "toy" to have to say the least, but I had to leave it when we moved house a year later.
it is interesting to know that there are quite a few people on bigsoccer who have owned a VW Beetle. There must be more, I have tried searching for people and found a few, but there must be more people who have owned a beetle.
no, i had a '71 VW superbeetle convertible. yellow with a black top. i just like how psychedelic that pic is. everything's groovy in a bug! oh, and i just stumbled upon this thread one evening last week. this thread really makes me want to buy an old junker and fix 'er up!
I glad that you all like this thread, there are loads of replacement parts that are new from increasing numbers of reliable sites.
It's been years now, but Beetles were a big part of my life once. My first car (inherited from my grandmother) was a 1975 yellow Super Beetle with what I thought of a semi-automatic transmission. It was a three speed with the clutch embedded in the stick shift and behaved like an automatic in the sense that you didn't have to take it out of geer while stopped. This is a '73 and not a Super, but the color is exactly as I remember mine: I was able to drive it for as long as I did (from the Fall of 1984 through May of 88) because my father was completely addicted when it came to VWs. He had a VW bus before I was born, another after I left home and bought at least half a dozen Beetles that I can recall, including a pair in the late 70s where one was a 68 pretty good shape but the engine was dead ($150) and a '66 where the body was completely rusted out, but the engine still ran well. Without using a garage or any fancy equipment, he put the '66 engine into the '68 body. The oldest of his was (I think) a '61, which was what the 66/68 replaced after it died. My Beetle died while I was out of town for the weekend. It was parked on the street, and as near as I could tell, a truck hit one of the rear wheels, damaging the axle and/or differential beyond my father's ability to fix it. I mourned that thing like it was my child.
great info there, those beetles mentioned are quite rare - great collection. A beetle is one car that can be attached to a lot most, than any other car.
Great thread. My first car in HS was a 1974 convertible orange Super Beetle. Total chick magnet. "Ooh, what a cute car!"
