Here's where we can discuss following Valur in Iceland this summer, as it may be more entertaining than following the Rapids. Today is the 106th anniversary of the founding of the club in Reykjavik. Valur is the Icelandic word for the gyrfalcon. Iceland's seasons are short, only 22 games total. Valur has won its first 2 to sit on top of the league so far. Their best players are probably midfielders Haukur Pall Sigurdsson, who is also team captain, and Guojon Petur Lydsson. The only non-Scandinavian player on the roster at the moment is American midfielder Dion Acoff
I am in. Would appreciate someone giving updates or pointing to the right forum to follow. Although it might be nice to pick someone who has a former Rapid player or Colorado person on it. rod.
I use the Forza app on my phone. It allows you to pick your favorite teams from just about any league in the world. It has real time (or almost real time for the less followed team/leagues) score updates and it will give you news alerts too if you want. Today it shows games in 38 leagues or competitions, from Europa to the Singaporean S League to the Russian Youth League. I've added Valur to my list of favorite teams in the app.
Here are Valur's website and Twitter account. Being juuuuuust a little rusty on Icelandic (I don't have a clue what those words are), this Icelandic-to-English translator is helpful.
I am down! Since the club's name reminds me of velour I think velour tracks with club crest are only fitting for those chilly Icelandi
Today's Valur game with three C38 members in attendance (including @Quinn 33) was a 1-1 draw with Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar. Both goals were scored off of penalties, Valur took the lead in the 33rd before giving up the equalizing penalty in the 83rd.
Valur dominated the first half and probably should have had a another goal or two. FH made some adjustments at halftime and looked the better side in the second and could have had a few more goals themselves. Nice little ground. About 1,500 seats with full attendance and a good sized group of traveling supporters as well.
Very cool pictures! Don't know if I posted these before but I missed the national tournament while living in Greenland but was able to watch on TV. Note that the pitch is is gravel and dirt. Wish the night life there was as fun as in Iceland!
On Thursday Valur beak Vikingur Olafsvik 1-0 in the Round of 32 of the Icelandic Cup (This is Iceland's equivalent of the FA Cup). Valur's goal was scored by Andri Adolphsson.
Valur beat KR Reykjavik 2-1 today. Valur goals scored by Gudjon Lydsson and Sigurdur Egill Larusson. This is their big rivalry match so a big win for Valur! Valur trails Stjarnan Gardabae by goal differential at the top of the table after 4 matches.
OK, Later today I really need to check and see if you are all making this up (OK the photos are nice, like Prometheus with soccer). Who is next on the schedule Blafergyproden Migypodasjar? R
On Sunday Valur lost to UMF Grindavik 1-0. This leaves the two teams tied at 2nd in the table (Valur getting the edge on goal differential) and 3 points behind leaders Stjarnan Gardabae after 5 (of 22) games.
Catching up a bit here. Last Wednesday Valur lost to Stjarnan Gardabae in the Round of 16 of the Icelandic Cup, eliminating them fromt he competition. Valur's goal was a penalty in first half stoppage time scored by Sigurdun Egill Larusson. Yesterday Valur beat IBV Vestmannaeyjar 2-1 with goals from Larusson again and Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen. They trail Stjarnan by 2 goal differential at the top of the table with 3rd placed UMF Grindavik 3 points back.
I am Swedish and laughed out loud when I read it. FYI ~ when living in Sweden, the Swedish Chef is a "Danish Chef", which all Swedes think is hilarious.
These 10-day breaks between games are a killer. The Valur - Breidablik game on the 14th will be telling though, no question. Highlights from a previous Valur - Breidablik match: You can see what a sneaky bunch of bastards the Breidablikians are. They appear to change their jerseys several times per match and they clearly pay no attention to substitution rules.
Does anyone know if there will be a streaming option for the game? Would be awesome to get a contingent from Colorado watching so it shows up on the stats. Might get some interest in why Colorado is watching Might Valur. rod.
Denver already shows up in top 5 of EPL broadcasts which is one reason why MLS is so big on soccer here and why some give way, way too much credit for TH putting more butts in seats (Compared to our EPL Viewership it is very sub standard).
