USSF has quietly replaced outgoing Chief Soccer Officer Ryan Mooney with Asher Mendelsohn.https://t.co/uylt1xHDoS— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018 Mendelsohn was, at one point, Director of Soccer Operations with the Crew. An old Columbus Dispatch article says that Berhalter was involved with hiring him back in 2013.https://t.co/41IsAj155s— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018 Before his Crew gig, it looks like he worked for the USSF and was involved with DA administration, coaching, and referees.— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018 Just noting all this. Per the USSF org chart, the CSO position has joint authority with the Chief Sport Development Officer (Nico Romeijn) over a huge portfolio: DA, coaching ed, referees, YNTs, and talent ID.— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018 It's just my opinion, but that portfolio looks a lot like how I would define a "technical director" type position. So I think the CSO and CSDO, Mendelsohn and Romeijn, should probably get more attention than they currently receive. It's a big, important job.— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018
For example, I wish they'd say something about the complete lack of YNT coach hiring. There are vacancies up and down the system: U19 (Friedel), U18 (Namazi), U17 (Hackworth). And of course U23.— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018 It also reinforces that the Youth Technical Director job (Tab Ramos) while big-sounding, doesn't have much authority beyond coordinating YNTs.And if you buy the theory that Stewart's authority will expand over time, these are the rival lords in the USSF feudal system.— Jamie Hill (@_jameshill) December 22, 2018
Ehh. I don't know. The YNT has been somewhat separate from the NT but other wise the NT gets priority in everything. Seems par for the course in what I have observed over the years. I just don't see how those two roles would ever really be fighting for turf.
