What did Claudio Reyna say the other day about a "Culture of Arrogance in American Soccer"?

I guess "average" is good enough to reach the finals of the last World Cup and last two Copa Americas... isn't Messi the only player to score for Arentina in like a full calendar year?

    Says it all.

Our arrogancy to talent/coaching ratio must be the worst in the world.

No wonder so many are happy we didn't make it.

Reboot is the only option. How else do we clean out such a polluted mess? This is the chief scout for the NT!

Hey may have already been let go along with everyone else? His twitter bio makes it seem as though he's currently in that position, but this tweet says "ex":

920884814064078848 is not a valid tweet id

    Edit: October 18: "got fired"

“In 2007, United States U-20 coach Thomas Rongen left Subotic off the roster for the U-20 World Cup, claiming that Subotic was injured. Subotic has consistently claimed that he was healthy.”

Remember this? Rongen is a jackass. How can someone like him get into such a position?

Note those tweets are from October 7, since then the US has crashed out of World Cup qualifying against Trinidad and f'ing Tobago, and Rongen has likely lost his job along with the rest of the jokers on Arena's coaching staff... meanwhile Messi scored a hat trick to carry Argentina to the World Cup, and became the first player to score 100 goals for the same club in European competition.

Yes we all remember Subotic, but that was quite a while ago. He seemed okay in the documentary Next Goal Wins:

And after that he was academy director for Toronto FC. But then he was fired by the Tampa Bay Rowdies a couple years ago, and apparently just fired by US Soccer, so maybe American Samoa is more "his level"...

Anyone surprised that Bruce Arena's staff is as egotistical and as arrogant as Bruce?

    Wrong-Again is, well. WRONG AGAIN.

How does this hack keep getting jobs with USS? This is exactly what I mean when I talk of the USS GOB network.

I mean really. Of all the outstanding Dutch coaches around the world we end up with this clown?

Perhaps because the USSF has a low soccer IQ.

I can see Wrong-again's point re: Messi's predictability though. I mean, watch Leo closely. He predictably dribbles past one to four defenders and then really does one of only two things. He passes to a teammate who scores or he shoots and scores. How predictable can you get?:thumbsdown:

Back in the early days of MLS Wrong-un was briefly manager of the Revs. He made the bright decision to skip out on an important match for the team so that he could watch a Nat's match from the scoreboard. Wrong-again is Wrong-still.

Should we go back to never criticizing anyone , burying our heads in the sand, having all the journalists kiss the ring and congratulating ourselves for just qualifying out of concacaf all the time... oh wait.

He was our U-20 coach from 2001 to 2005. He left the position in order to get fired from Chivas USA after ten games.

So then they hired him back to the U-20 from 2006 to 2011. He basically was responsible for our U-20 development in the 2000's.

He's also the guy who lost us Neven Subotic - after publicly criticizing him for lack of development in Europe. Specifically, he said that Subotic had "not accelerated over there to the point where we feel he belongs on the team." And then he left him off the team, for the U-20 World Cup. Shortly after, Subotic switched to Serbia.

Two years later, in 2008, speaking to Goal.com, Rongen claimed his comments weren't a criticism at all, and that he left Subotic off the team because he was injured, not because he felt Subotic didn't belong on the team ... despite that being exactly what he had said.

He did concede that Subotic was a talented prospect - about equally as talented as another prospect, Chad Marshall. Guys, remember Chad Marshall?

Rongen also ran through the general list of excuses - his comments were taken out of context, the media and fans misunderstood him, history itself was incorrect - and then inexplicably threw in a backhanded jibe at Subotic: "I'm glad that Neven has said now, finally, that it didn't really play any role in his decision-making, because he needs to realize that it's small potatoes He's got a lot thicker skin than people give him credit for. Anywhere in the world, you're going to get criticized, so you've got to get thicker skin than that."

Subotic, for his part, had said his decision was not related to Rongen's comments or the snub from the U20 roster, and that he'd taken no offense - despite that being patently untrue.

Which means Subotic, at 20 years old, showed more grace than the USA's U20 head coach.

Rongen was eventually fired (in 2011), and he became the most successful international head coach of all time ... in American Samoa. They beat Tonga, you guys. TONGA.

Anyway, Bruce hired this clown to be the USA's head scout last year.

Incidentally, Chad Marshall got his first call-up in seven years as soon as Rongen was hired.

    You think Rongen is bad...
Richie Williams was the US U-17 coach when they failed to qualify for the U-17 World Cup for the first time ever in 2013 (while feuding with Junior Flores, who he inexplicably benched). He was also the coach at the 2015 U-17 World Cup when a team with Pulisic finished last in the group (and seems to have a vendetta against Weston McKennie). Then he became an assistant coach under Jeff Cassar as he ran RSL into the ground. Somehow all of that got him a job as one of Arena's assistant coaches for the USMNT... talk about failing upwards!

There you go, it's Richie Williams. You want to defend him? Do you have anything of substance to add, or just "HOT TAKE HOT TAKE"?

His soccer IQ seemed fine when they beat us 4-0 in the Centenario and didn't allow us ONE SHOT toward their goal's general direction.

Richie Williams is assistant coach? I don't even know this and it make me feel creepy.

He is totally a loser as our U17 ynt coach. In his first cycle he failed to reach U17 WC, but unbelievably he remained for another cycle, this time he got Pulisic and a pretty talented team but played crappy soccer and finished last in the group of U17 WC.

now I just know he still got the job, this time in our usmnt program as assistant coach! this single fact proves something got seriously wrong in ussoccer. Is he fired? I'm tired of this old friends club.
