Maybe what he meant was that he'd driven to the house and watched Jonathan from a back window as he slept. Three times. He just wanted to be near him.
Richie Williams also drove Gonzalez's U17 teammates Abraham Romero and Edwin Lara to leave the USYNT program and join Mexico's.
Did Rongen also lie about getting fired? The top tweet "ex" has been deleted, the "got fired" tweet from Oct 18 is still there, but it sure seems like Rongen is still US Soccer chief scout.... (unfortunately)
Franco Panizo at SBI: Report: U.S. Soccer never visited Jonathan Gonzalez at home ESPN analyst Herculez Gomez said on Monday via the Max & Herc podcast that Thomas Rongen, U.S. Soccer’s lone full-time scout, did not go and visit Gonzalez’s home prior to the teenager’s decision to switch allegiances from the U.S. to Mexico. Rongen had claimed in a CBS article earlier this month that he had visited the midfielder’s “house three times” in 2017, but Gomez said both the player and his dad refuted that. ... “Rongen said, ‘Jonathan’s father is correct. I never went to go see him at his house specifically,'” said Gomez. “He then said he has been to Monterrey three times. He didn’t specify if he tried reaching out to Jonathan himself, but he said he spoke to officials down there. We spoke both via phone and text. At this point, I didn’t know if he was referring to Monterrey or (the Mexican federation) but his claim about seeing Jonathan at his house on three specific times is false.” ... Gomez also shared an anecdote regarding Gonzalez’s younger days. The analyst said that former U.S. Under-17 coach Richie Williams reached out to Gonzalez and his family when the player was 14, asking if Gonzalez wanted to join the U.S.’s residency program. At the time, Gonzalez had multiple offers from Liga MX clubs to play in an academy tournament and was assessing which team to represent. “They asked (Williams) if it was okay if they could think it over because he had this potential offers as well,” said Gomez. “Richie Williams put an all-or-nothing, take-it-or-leave-it, you-have-10-minutes-to-decide-or-I’m-going-to-the-next-player proposal.”
This just keeps getting better and better. I still hate that he left and more importantly said that he was with team USA until the last min but I no longer blame him for leaving.
Rongen's Twitter is something else... once again he's implying that he's no longer employed, maybe it's actually true this time? Exist no longer, No Mas ✌️ pic.twitter.com/6hrmWG8SM6— Thomas Rongen (@TRongen) January 24, 2018 He also took a completely random and unexpected shot at Freddy Adu: Adu: noun Audience Deficiency Unit Or Alcohol Disposal Unit pic.twitter.com/Jpbyq1KlbN— Thomas Rongen (@TRongen) January 23, 2018
In this Howler interview from a week or so ago he says he "left" his position sometime in December.: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fight-for-dual-nationals/id581810649?i=1000399629393&mt=2 Truly bizarre, I don't even understand why someone would lie about the things he is lying about. In any event that podcast is amazingly bad. If you are prone to self harm please do not listen.
Rongen is at it again! Exhibit IQ 1.Messi's inability to recognize how to utilize his players around him to make them better and trust them. IQ 2.He has not been able to tap into exceptional players like Dybala, Benega and others skill sets,to maximize his own. And how they can PLAY HIM into the game https://t.co/fMp6k7RcAq— Thomas Rongen (@TRongen) March 15, 2018 Exhibit IQ https://t.co/hwqRHGkKZa the number 10 forces himself to drop deeper and deeper into midfield in search of possession. Exhibit IQ 4. In effect, Messi sets himself up the play for others. https://t.co/jamLMdB5l4— Thomas Rongen (@TRongen) March 15, 2018 Best tweet of the day 👍 https://t.co/qKfRn1anme— Thomas Rongen (@TRongen) March 15, 2018 The "best tweet": Sir Thomas, I have to say, your Messi comments have been the best I’ve seen on Twitter. Thank you for speaking the truth. Messi is a poor player.
Remember that time he bald face lied on camera about visiting Jonathon Gonzalez 3 times in person, took no personal responsibility for losing the program a great prospect and then blamed it on everything and everyone else? https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/ne...ts-top-young-players-to-mexico-national-team/ Oh it's deleted? Why is this guy still employed in any soccer related function in this country?
And if you are wondering about the poor state of USA soccer, Thomas Rongen is a coach in the system in charge of talent evaluation.
And has been for decades and is just one of many of the same group of people that have been recycled over and over again, including the current coaching staff, which after failing in the most spectacular way imaginable is still in place. Meanwhile, we get more stories about how Sarachan, who got passed over for a 3rd rate college job at St Louis university, is actually considered a legitimate candidate for the head coaching position long term, then we do any stories from soccer "journalists" about the liar, the effects, consequences and what if any changes will be made moving forward in the talent evaluation department. Point being Rongen is a small little symptom of the poor state of US soccer
Don't forget he was head coach of our U-20 team from 2001 to 2011!* The man shaped our young talents and mind for a generation. (** Except for a brief sabbatical in 05-'06 that he spent getting fired from Chivas.) His greatest career accomplishment was leading American Samoa to victory over Tonga. Giant-killers. Then he directed the Toronto FC academy, got fired in less than a year coaching the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and then was crowned as chief international scout by Arena, in a career path that defines the phrase "failing upwards." And I think he's still technically in that role along with the rest of Arena's staff.
It's all in the terms of the contract. If you're hired under the right contract and prove inept, all that is left is kick you upward.
It's worse than that-it's the old distrust of pure talent that is common in so many American/British coaches in any sport.
