It only happens with our better players when they train under Berhalter. When they are with their professional clubs (Dortmund, Schalke, TB Leipzig, and Newcastle) they are much faster. Why oh why did we not signs Tata?
Jozy did well today, at least compared to Zardes, that's for sure. But I think the point of the roster was, you can load up on young, talented players. If we were playing like this without the old guys (MB, Jozy, Ream, OG) and the never-were guys (Trapp, Zardes, Arriola), people wouldn't be upset.
Most likely we will have to go through Honduras then... Jamaica. I think there is every possibility that we see a repeat of 2015.
Because they provide no width and no defensive presence. It's like how Trapp is much-maligned. Why? Because a player in his position should be doing something. 3G's LB's don't do much of anything at all. So may as well make them CB's (where they won't get roasted on headers) or orthodox LB's (where they will be able to track back and provide width. As with many things, 3G tries something that accomplishes neither.
What did Jozy do today besides pass off and look at the sky? He seemed disgusted at what was going on behind him. Did he or Zardes get any shots? I dont think so.
Because they're symptomatic of the issue of not choosing the best players or at the very least not choosing the player with the most upside to improve. They're not the answer so why are we bothering with them in the first place? Now I will agree that they're not the most important problem but again if you're not part of the solution they are part of the problem. Though at this point GGG is the biggest problem.
Well, it seems like every LB we play becomes much maligned. Those two were solid, if unspectacular and to suggest the game would improve if they could provide width in attack is really, REALLY looking past a lot of major problems these past two games. As I said, LB was the absolute least of our worries.
This is because Berhalter is outcoaching himself by trying to be too clever. Elaborate tactical schemes are for club teams that train together week in and week out, not national teams where players come in three days before the game. The national teams that can get away with his scheming are the ones where most of the players come from only one or two clubs. When the players are distracted by trying to figure out a new system with teammates they're not extremely familiar with, the speed of thought slows down and players are more prone to unforced errors. This is why our Europe-based players perform well with their clubs against much stronger opposition than this Venezuela team, and then look terrible under Berhalter.
This is exactly where I'm at. Take Mexico to the wire in the final or GTFO. Then again, unlike a lot of people here, I'm also pessimistic about the future of our prospects coming up from the youth ranks with the exception of a couple guys here and there. We're running out of dual nationals to unearth. Go figure my two main don't miss a game sports teams are the USMNT and the Detroit Lions. So many parallels in both organizations right now. Might as well just go along for the ride and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
I watched this shit today. Jozy played well. He’s not a world-beater,but he did a good job trying to collect the ball and initiate the attack. That’s what target strikers do.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but at this point I miss how the USMNT played under Dave Sarachan. He seemed to have no over-arching plan, but at least he called in some decent rosters and the guys played hard under him. This looks like a complete hot mess; there is a reliance on technically-deficient players who are not fit for this system, and in fact the guys look confused on where they’re even supposed to be during the run of play. I blame the manager at this point for trying to force square pegs into round holes, but I also really blame US Soccer for waiting forever and a day to start anew with this current cycle. This is utterly embarrassing.
They should use this as the game summary on ussoccer.com. A picture (er, video) truly is worth 1000 words.
I think it should depend on both results and how he gets the results. If he keeps playing his system and we're not in the Gold Cup final, he has to go. If he pulls the plug on his tactical experiments and we do poorly, give him a little longer to right the ship (the Gold Cup roster is already set) but keep him on a short leash; one or two more camps with "system" players and he's out.
None. I remember a take from Mia Hamm, who said something along the lines of, "If we want an easy game, we play a U-16 boys team. If we want a competitive match, we play U-18s. If we want to get hammered, we play U-20s."
It's "the system" that's the issue. When GGG finally played an orthodox LB.... he put him at wingback in a 3-4-3. When he's in his system, he's playing a bad CB at LB or an MLS nobody.
I think that quote from Mia Hamm was about U-15, U-16, and U-17 teams. (Boys grow fast in that age range. The USWNT has been fairly competitive with U-16 boys teams, but has been hammered by the US U-17 boys every time they scrimmaged.)
