So basically, we tactically beat a tactically defensive team..?

ESPN's average positioning for the team

    A refresher on numbers

    1. Howard
    2 Cherundolo
    3 F. Johnson
    4 Goodson
    5 Bocanegra

    6 Bradley
    8 Edu

    11 Shea
    7 D. Williams
    10 Dempsey
    9 Altidore

    Subs

    13 Spector
    16 Kljestan
    17 Buddle
    18 Boyd

It says a couple of interesting things about the team.

Danny Williams was actually wider than Brek Shea on average.

Bradley and Edu were equally in the middle of the field, likely trading off defensive roles there but Bradley was further forward than Edu on average.

Interestingly Dempsey wasn't much further forward than those two. Likely explanation was that Dempsey came back to try and link possession.

Two very funny ones are Spector and Kljestan. Obviously they were on the field late and it's pretty easy to see that they were both pushed back into deep defensive positions during that time.

Howard was too far off his line. ;)

He said he was really trying to help shut down Pirlo.
