T&T has quit playing the bunker. Now they are standing around in a bunker formation and waiting to see how the US chooses to attack.
T&T will soon tire again. The score is just a matter of how bloodthirsty the US cares to be. I've been on both sides of this kind of match and there is no good thing that the winning team can do. If they keep scoring they are rubbing it in and if they pull back they are not respecting their opponent.
I agree...I was just trying to be honorable myself, but that would be like wishing my cat top o the mornin while cleaning his barf off my bed....
I actually think T&T gave up by their choice of playing a deep bunker before the game even started. I do not give, at least their coaching staff, any credit except for cowardice and stupidity. They had no chance in the group so why not, at least at the start, try to actually play the game instead of surrendering before the kickoff.
The stupid commentator just said "at one point it was one to nothing...". Of course it was once 1-0. It had to be to get to 2-0, 3-0 and so on.
I think that the number of touches T&T has had in the attacking half can be counted on one hand or maybe just by taking the sum of the opposable digits on both hands. Although the score is, at least for now, less this is every bit as dominant as Canada was vs Cuba.
The US has taken their foot off the gas but they have done it in such a way as to not further humiliate T&T.
I thought for about the first 20 minutes they played as well as Ive seen them play. They were not only playing at a high tempo but connecting their passes. Sure Morgan and Horan didn't finish well but they had lots of quality chances including Morgans four shots on the woodwork. Then the rain started and they seemed to loose their rhythm a bit.
Yes, and we would be in exactly the same position if we had lost 5 or 6 to 0. There is not more than one team in CONCACAF that can, without the US self destructing, play anything close to even with the US. It is unfortunate that the only matchup, baring CR beating Canada by a huge margin, that will cause the two best teams in CONCACAF to meet is their probable meeting in the finals and the finals of this tournament are about as meaningless as a final can be. The finals of fake tournaments like the Algrave or She Believes are more important than the final of this tournament. I think they should not play the final (due to risk of injury) and make the third place game what it really is, the last meaningful game of this tournament and the only one on the final day worth showcasing.
At least Lavelle and Horan can shoot from a distance. We need those players because Morgan can only score from the six yard box. A good team/good bunker is not going to give her that space. This is a very glaring weakness of her game, and why she has a lot of trouble in the NWSL and looked quite poor against the SBC opponents. She should have had at least ten goals tonight.
So, am I the only one who noticed the reappearance of the Dreaded Three Back in this game? Functionally it was Ertz, Brunn and Dahlkamper a lot of the time with Dunn and O'Hara not really even giving lip service to the idea that they were backs. I think that's why we played it so much when we did-- not because there was ever any notion that we would use it exclusively, but so that we would "know where the rocks are" when we use it situationally, either as today, to keep the pressure on an overmatched opponent, or when we are down and need to get back even... Perfect game for where we are, really. Swarming them like that but being unable to score, then breaking through in a big way in the last five of the half made for a good and satisfying workout, and scoring on some outside shots will help with the self-image a little. Now for the game that "counts but doesn't really matter..."
I hear what you're saying but a tournament with no final makes for bad TV. Let's be honest, this is Fox's chance to get some eyeballs. Not sure what the Costa Rica-Cuba ratings were but I imagine they were miniscule.
Ahhhhhhh yes, that perfect mixture of precipitation, BAC and awesomeness on the field. "A" Team......check. "B" Team......check. Detractors, whiners, posers and non-believers........BITE ME. But I'll still buy you Margaritas at the Blue Goose Cantena located to the West of Toyota Park before SF's and Finals. Don't forget to have fun in life.
