I wouldn't say it was a collapse, it's just that Vancouver played their starters in front of a home crowd. It just shows the difference in quality between MLS and NASL sides, but also shows the lack of depth in MLS sides beyond their starting 11. I think that will be key in the MLS/NASL matches coming up - if MLS teams play their starters, they'll win. If they play their reserves, they'll lose.
U.S. Open Cup Round 4 Preview: East River Derby, more One of the most fun parts of the American soccer calendar is about to get underway. The fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup brings Major League Soccer teams into the competition, pitting the majority of them against clubs from lower leagues. Scheduling might play into the underdogs’ hands here; MLS has been on break for a week-and-a-half due to Copa America competition, while the NASL and USL have kept playing. http://www.empireofsoccer.com/u-s-open-cup-round-4-preview-east-river-derby-more-49529/
Exactly. Anyone that watches CCL games will see the same thing with MLS teams "collapsing" to Liga MX teams. The reality is that the better league's teams are able to turn on the juice when needed, even if starting off in the hole.
Vancouver is also a stronger team in the tougher Western Conference, while most of NASL's competitions is the bottom half of the weaker Eastern Conference. I could see some upsets in this next round, even over MLS starters.
U.S. Open Cup | Tale Of Two Cities For Peter Wilt In Fourth Round One day after downing the visiting Carolina RailHawks, Indy Eleven claimed the mantle as the Spring Season Champion when FC Edmonton defeated Fort Lauderdale on the season’s final day. Indy advanced to the fourth round of the Open Cup, which is when the 17 U.S.-based MLS clubs enter the competition, after a 2-1 victory over Louisville City FC of the USL on June 1. In all, seven of nine NASL clubs in the tournament advanced and all seven will be in action on Wednesday. “When I was in Chicago we took this tourney very seriously, maybe more seriously than most of the other clubs because we viewed it as an important, historic trophy,” Wilt said. “It’s an opportunity for lower division teams to prove their worth.” He added: “History implies that all teams should take it seriously. In Chicago, we have four U.S. Open Cup trophies to show how seriously we take it. There I go using the word ‘WE.’ The Fire is just one championship short of tying the Open Cup record (Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel have each won five times). They have not had a good start to the season, and this is a second opportunity for a team not doing well in league competition to have some success. Also, for NASL teams, this is the only route to the CONCACAF Champions League.” http://www.nasl.com/news/2016/06/14/us-open-cup--tale-of-two-cities-for-peter-wilt-in-fourth-round
