    Hey Everyone,

Wanted to give you an update since there's a good amount of speculation. We've made a formal offer to Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Most of you here on the soccer blogs will recognize the name, but a lot of people in the general public probably won’t, and that’s ok. We think he’s the type of player that is a perfect Designated Player signing for us. He’s a big, strong target forward who is tough as nails and works hard all the time. He’s played for Chelsea, Barcelona and some of the biggest clubs in Europe, so he’s a proven player.

He’s recently been at Tottenham (loaned from AS Monaco), and I'm relatively certain they will make an offer as well. This is the type of guy we want to go after: A world-class player who knows how to win championships. I'm hopeful we get this done, but it's going to be a bit of a waiting game.

    See you Saturday.....rh

    thanks for the update Robb-

    Chelsea sucks, that is all.

there has to be a joke about how we know he will look good in our jersey since he wore it for 6 years in England?

Oh and Spurs sucks as well, guess that first "that is all." was not correct

    Interesting.

I would be fairly pleased with that signing. He isnt too old but has lots of experience and would bring some composure and experience to our attack.

    The "Ice Man" cometh!

On a side note, the title of the linked highlights is so incorrect it's not even humorous!!!

    A. wow. a totally great signing if it can com thru

    B. one of the guys i suggested in Jan in threads about prospective DPs for MLS

    C. i think he was on about 80,000 GBP a week so either he is taking a pay cut or that is going to be one heck of a DP

    D. he did really well for Spurs in the 2nd half last season

    E. oh, and i'd like to second the "chelsea sucks" sentiment

Chelsea and Spurs .... ha ha ... lets hope Ryan Smith and him can get along :D

Seriously though this would be a quality signing ... a surprising one ... but in a very good way. Really would be interested to find out how much we offered him (I know thats not gonna happen) but there you go.

Robb, thanks for keeping us up to speed on these latest developments, it's fun to feel like we're in the know re: our club's hard work to sign a quality d.p., given we don't have the benefit of tabloids to do it for us :)

It'll be exciting if he does sign!

I also hope we pay him a decent wage now that remittances from Eidur Gudjohnsen are the sole basis of Iceland's economy.

nice, hope to hear he is signed soon. would be a great thing wake up to on Saturday or something along those lines. Would love to blare some Bjork before the games :).. material for chants already, though drums would not be a pedestrian endeavor for those familiar with the Icelanders music.

Don't even need to watch more than a minute or two to see that this guy would absolutely torch most MLS defenders with his dribbling. This would be awesome if we can get this guy.

He is not that great of a dribbler compared to Smith, but he is a better finisher. How old is he now? Looked it up - 32 in September.

    The Hansons will be thrilled.

so if this gets done and I assume we stick to the 4-3-3, does Kei move to RW and he comes in at CF or does he just take Wolffs spot at RW? any guesses?

He could also play a bit more of an attacking mid role, pushing Davy up to the right wing...

At Barcelona he often subbed in at an attacking midfield role, I would like to see him playing there, but given that Robb describes him as a target forward that is probably were we will see him.

He isn't the flashy dribbler that Ryan Smith is, but his vision is incredible and he has, or at least did have, a much greater work rate. And he would probably rank up with Angel as one of the best finishers in the league. All-in-all this is a much better potential signing that I ever expected to get. If Ongoal actually succeeds in outbidding Tottenham major props to them.

From the few chances I have had to talk to Vermes, it sounds like he prefers Kei on the right rather than in the center. If we do sign Gudjohnsen I bet he would play at cf with kei and Smitty on the wings.
