When: 3/3/19 @ 6:00PM ET/3:00 PM PT Where: Audi Field Why: it is a scheduled match. Can’t avoid it. James
Let's get this "club" started for 2019 I am really not feeling it yet this year, I didn't even realize there was a final pre-season drubbing this past weekend. What channel is the game on? I saw lots of commercials for two Saturday games on FS1 while watching NASCAR all weekend and remembered way back in the day when we would have been included in any opening-day-TV-doubleheader. I predict a non-exciting nil-nil draw with at least one digit lost to frostbite (not sure if it'll be in the stands or on the field). edit: To answer my own question, we'll be on ESPN, then we're not on again until FS1 on March 31st
That's somewhat of an improvement, if correct. A few days ago, it was 33 at game-time, and 30 post-game!
Just wanted to note that Atlanta lost 3-1 in the CONCACAF Champion's Cup competition at home against Herediano last Thursday and played away this Thursday. I hope they all come in on crutches...
I think the loss to Herediano was away last week; they play in Kennesaw (at the erstwhile Atlanta Beat stadium) day after tomorrow, I believe. But great point about Atlanta having to play Thursday, then come here Sunday. Plus, if their rhetoric is to be believed they take CCL seriously, so they ought to put in an effort Thursday to overcome that 1-3 deficit. We'll see.
According to the Capital Weather Gang the forecast for Sunday is rain/snow. The stadium may be less than half full due to weather. Gee, starting the season in North America before the vernal equinox, who would have figured on this?
Referees for Sunday: D.C. United vs Atlanta United Audi Field (6PM ET) REF: Jair Marrufo AR1: Frank Anderson AR2: Jeffrey Greeson 4TH: Marcos DeOliveira VAR: Alan Kelly AVAR: Thomas Supple
Do they have an assistant VR ref in case the primary ref pulls an eye muscle? In additional game-time personnel news from tweet by Jonathan Tannenwald: ESPN's MLS commentators this weekend... Pregame at 6 p.m.: @SebiSalazarFUT hosts @dcunited vs. @atlutd, 6:30: @JonChampionJC, @TaylorTwellman and @espnsutcliffe I'm sure some will whine, but I like Twellman as an announcer
Jon Champion is doing PBP for a DC United match? That's pretty great. I really enjoy hearing him call a game. Edit to add: Just discovered Champion is actually ESPN's lead PBP guy for MLS this year. I'm 100% on board with that.
And yet Sports Center still won't show highlights of regular season MLS matches unless: a) there's a great goal = #8 in the day's Top Ten Plays. b) somebody in MLS misses an easy goal, blows an easy save, does something stupid = #7 in the day's Top Ten Plays c) a cat/dog/racoon/seagull/wholly mammoth runs out onto an MLS pitch = #5 in the day's Top Ten Plays d) a grandstand collapses at an MLS stadium, injuring scores = perhaps actual news coverage-- maybe e) a flare is thrown onto an MLS pitch or some other quasi-hooligan activity = actual news story, but one intended to subtly bash soccer as a whole. Pick yer poison . . .
How did that end up, I watched the end of the first half. They seemed fairly easily beaten by speed. Unfortunately we haven't had much of that since the 'Aughts.
Have to assume CCL takes some priority in ATL's eyes, but it it goes without saying they'll take Sunday seriously. Think they'll rest any players or use some stars conservatively?
As noted, the first leg was away, and last night's game was in Atlanta, where they crushed Herediano 4-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Maybe they'll be tired, as quite a few starters played into the second half, but maybe not.
