Hate to change the subject but who knows where Carolina will be playing this year with Fetzer under renovation?

Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, NC. I'm not sure if it's official yet but all signs point to it.

Sorry to chime in, but I confess that I didn't understand what the subject is actually, although I've read some posts in this thread: I've got that UCLA pulled out for some controversial reason, but, from the discussion here, I didn't understand what exactly that reason is (and I don't follow US College Soccer enough to know that otherwise).

I general, my point of view is similar to Soccerhunter's one, but it's difficult to actually agree or disagree when I don't know what exactly is about.

The North Carolina state govt passed a bill that is widely considered discriminatory & UCLA is basically protesting by refusing to play any sports in the state.

That is not correct. No California public school can play in 8 states including North Carolina due to a ban on paying for travel to those states. It has nothing to do with UCLA. Please stop with the misinformation.

I am not sure I fully understood the matter. What government are we talking about? North Carolina's government or California's government? Consider I'm not from USA: in general I know quite well where places are (so I am aware that traveling from California to North Carolina with no payed travel is very expensive, since it basically means going through all of the USA coast to coast), but I don't know much about politics instead.

I get that UCLA dropped, but it was due to the fact that they somehow couldn't afford the expenses or it was an open protest against that law (they could have afforded the travel, but other schools could have not)? And what exactly that law did say, who did issued it and why was it seen as discriminatory? Because some little schools could never afford such travel costs, so they were unfairly discriminated in favour of schools of other states?

Here's an explanation that leaves out some details but that gets at the essentials: The North Carolina legislature passed a law that the California legislature considered to be discriminatory in relation to sexual identity. The law has to do with who can use which bathrooms. ln response to the North Carolina law and similar laws adopted by some other states, the California legislature passed a law that prohibited institutions that are part of the California state government from spending public funds for travel to and lodging in states with laws such as the North Carolina law. UCLA is one of many state schools of higher education that are part of the state government. Therefore under California law, UCLA sports teams cannot play games in North Carolina and other states with similar laws.

Oh, ok, now finally I got what we're talking about. And I had also happened to have read something about NC legislature about bathrooms and the discussion that ensued.

Thank you for you neutral but informative post, @cpthomas: I swear that if I should have guessed the subject we're talking about from the rest of the thread, I wouldn't have been able to do it! :p

I didn't know that tid bit, and while I do feel the need to apologize I fail to see the importance of the distinction aside from a UCLA fan feeling slighted in some way. Saying UCLA is not traveling to North Carolina because of a protest related to the NC Bathroom Law is sufficient a nutshell & I think some of you are trying WAY too hard to make it about more.

The bathroom part got all the press--a smoke screen--but the heart of the bill prohibited municipalities, like Charlotte and others, to pass ordinances expanding LBGTQ civil rights and raising the minimum wage. The compromise "repeal" of HB2 actually puts a 3-year moratorium on municipalities passing further civil rights ordinances of any kind. The NCGOP is just as homophobic and anti-human rights as ever--plenty of like voters in the sticks--but NC got most post season events back. Other states, like Texas, also have passed like discriminatory laws formulated by ALEC, the wildly successful Koch brother legislative project/conspiracy.

I hate this worm hole. what specific "civil rights" do non-LBGTQ seem to have that LBGTQ not have?

you are looking at it from the wrong direction. That's like asking what specific civil rights do white people have that black people do not.

Thinking some on here might not have twitter accounts or don't really use it much so: I've posted a thread of tweets touching on each UNC player in the NWSL.

New UNC sports website... Has any one else seen it?

Gone are all of the familiar features, and there are no photos on the home page. No way to get to Bartok's twitter site, etc.

If this is an improvement, count me out, I think that it is terrible. Sidearm Sports has done UNC athletics a huge disservice IMO.

    Other opinions?

Dorrance interview today with TDS' Wil Parchman is interesting.

While I am disappointed that he is not giving the new Development Academy credit for trying out new and better training methods, all of his comments about the international substitution rules are very interesting.

I tend not to dismiss new designs outright, but there are a few things already I don't like about it. The archive photo galleries, for one, are all gone. Which sucks. I'm finding it's a little difficult to read the schedule page, & the way the pages load are confusing & dizzying. The links are not well defined & look identical to other headers on the page that are not clickable. At first glance it needs a behavioral designers touch... Anna Seiloff is a UX specialist & probably should have been consulted first. XD

This feels like I've just been excommunicated. Terrible, Terrible website. Can the old one be accessed or is it completely gone?

Im curious if Sidearm has some sort of contract with the NCAA, because many new websites are popping up and they all suck. I am a USC Trojan fan and the new site is utterly unusable

I am very curious as to what you think are the better training methods that are going to be employed in the DA? The good coaches in ECNL and outside ECNL were more than likely doing better things outside of US Soccer recommendations like maybe things from Europe and South America already. You know the coaches that are invested in their profession. The ones that were poor and just hung the sign over the door that were in ECNL and outside ECNL that are now becoming defacto DA coaches are still poor. I am not convinced that we will see any better technical or tactical players than what are being identified right now.

I do not know what specific training methods will be used, but I am quite impressed with the quality and experience of the so far announced staffing and what I hear of the training philosophy. I get the impression that they are really going to try to do organized and serious developmental work for both players and coaches. I presume that this will reinforce many new and inovative coaching best practices. The coaching pool is changing, but the fact of the matter is that the same clubs and same coaches were involved in training before the ECNL came along 7 years ago and will be doing the same for the DA. Coaching development is critical and it the new DA seems to be serious about that part.

However, as Dorrance points out, to get the kind of technical development needed one has to start early in ball control and manipulation. And skimming the cream of the crop starting at 12 or 13 whether it's ECNL or the DA is just too late to compete with the rest of the world who are focusing on 7 and 8 year olds with their best youth coaches and proven coaching techniques. Also, Dorrance's has a good point about the silliness of sticking with the limited FIFA substitution rules hurting youth and young adult soccer development.

So here's some idle summer time thoughts about looking onto the future of Tarheel women's soccer: ..."What should or will the eventual transition from Anson Dorrance to his successor look like?"

Not that he will be leaving any time real soon....Knowing full well that he will retire only when he feels ready and the time is right, that time may not be for ten years for all I know. He is physically young for his years (66) at the moment, and if that continues he possibly could go to 80.

However, I personally think that it will be either after the 2019 season or maybe four years later if the recruiting stays reasonably strong. (That would put him at age 68 in 2019 or 72 by 2023.)

To sustain the legacy of UNC women' soccer, some careful planning has to be done, and I believe that it has already started. For one thing the revamp of Fetzer field (in theory) will be finished by the 2018 season and that should yield some benefits for play and for recruiting. And the process of staff transition has been under way for the last half decade. Long term assistant coaches have obviously been the tradition at UNC with Bill Palladino now on his 38th year and Chris Ducar entering his 22nd. Palladino may or may not stay as long as Anson does, but Ducar may be a key bridge staff member at such time as the head coaching is changed. Most doubt that Ducar wants the head coaching position and is content in his present role as keeper coach and chief talent scout.

And there is no talk that I have heard that any new head coach will be coming in from the outside, and consequently it will likely be a move from within. At this present time Damon Nahas is the man under the microscope. Nahas has been on staff since November 2015, but there is certainly time to invite others into the Tarheel family to see who may work out as a good fit.

I think that seeing how recruiting goes will possibly indicate the timing of retirement. While not as stellar as Stanford or UCLA, (or UVA in 2018 and Penn State in 2019), right now the 2018 and 2019 classes, are basically solid. Each have two players that should contribute immediately as freshmen (Pinto and Jones in 2018, and Bell and Hansen in 2019) and have other payers that may develop in the mean time. It is the 2020 class that may indicate when Anson may be thinking of moving out, assuming that prospects are asking about who will be their coach. The transition years are likely to be tenuous recruiting wise until the new head coach proves his/her mettle.

So, lots to watch for and speculate about!

I'd watch the Sahaydaks if i were any successor candidates. The shark is circling. Tiffany seems to be making a recent scheduling effort to put UCF (ie., herself) in front of the alma mater. If those career pawns she has at UCF could pull off an upset in the audition(s)....yay girls, you should be so proud...welp, see ya.

She probably couldn't qualify academically, so she will end up at Stanford. :)
