I am openminded, if Al Ahly plays in an African Championship I support them. In the end they represent Egypt. When Zamalek loses to Al Ahly I feel down but I won't be mad and angry.

In the end it's just sports. My wife is Moroccan and we enjoy watching Morocco vs Egypt games together just for tease :)

My friend told me about that. This will be a GREAT tournament. Unless Ahly played like they did today... :)

I agree with most of this. I see clubs like TP Mazembe and Bloemfontein Celtic examples of what can happen with proper investment and efforts made to entice fan interest.

An issue in SA is the perceived dominance of Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs. Many fans in SA don't root for their local clubs and only attend the matches that involve one of the two. This is a problem that is only magnified in most of SS Africa. In Nigeria most football fans only know that their team exists, say that they're probably hopeless, and then watch some Euro team on the tele.

Now as for Bloem, one of the biggest advantages that they have, as I pretty much suspected, is that they all pretty much speak the same language.

Some Glasgow Celtic fans in with their compatriots from the far south!

It would be nice to see this type of activity spread to more sub saharan clubs. I remember attending Nigeria v. Bulgaria in '94 with the Naija community here in the US and we chanted and sang the whole game.

    Mazembe fans @ 3:10.

    More from Bloem...

What it will take is better investment in domestic leagues. Full stop. Nigeria complains that fans only watch European football but clubs like Mazembe and Celtic have proven that fans in Africa will become vested in a team if it shows interest in the product. This is especially true for local clubs whose fans share the same language. That includes investing in stadiums to accentuate the fan experience. I also think that Nigerian teams might perform better if they were better supported.

    Pitch invasion in PSL...

Not knowing as much as I'd like to about music in Southern Africa, this sounds a lot like West African high life music. It would be interesting to know what it's called over there. Loving it. Kabo Yellow!

Hopefully Nigerians start to get more organized at the club level. I've heard that attendance is up for club matches and Akwa United played much of last season at their new stadium, so it's nice to see that not turn into a White Elephant. These are good beginnings. I long to see a day when I can view numerous videos of Nigerian supporters putting together TIFOS and filling stadiums. The music has always been a good part of West African footballing tradition. But I remember the chants that we did, like the Enyimba chant, in the '94 World Cup and was so pleased when I heard them during Nigeria's friendly in the UK before the last World Cup. Because until then, I hadn't heard these chants since 1994. It's almost like they didn't exist at all...

I wish that there was someone on here familiar with South African football who could enlighten me as to when this sort of crowd-chanting started in Bloemfontein Celtic, how they're doing, and why it hasn't seemed to spread to the rest of the vuvuzela-crazy league. Even Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs don't do anything similar. I love this team's fans because they do so much to express African culture in sport.

Nice to see the singing supporters culture spreading to Sundowns. It is nice to see clubs that aren't just Pirates or Chiefs growing in support.
