    Thanks for your reply.
Yeah I meant tanking before the NL, and to be precise I was not just thinking of Euro2020 (I guess it's either too late, or the NL format too new, to think about tanking for Euro2020) but about a more distant future where the same format applies.
    Say, Euro 2024.
What will keep Armenia and Estonias from tanking as soon as they realize they are out of the actual group contention?

UEFA has confirmed the composition of the four leagues for the UEFA Nations League 2018-19 - uefa.com

Germany, England, Poland would be just fine.
    Then Belgium, France, Holland.
    Portugal, Switzerland, Iceland.
    Spain, Italy, Croatia.

These I would like to see.

As for the all-important league “D”, here are the 4 top seeds along with the # of points they gained in WC qualifying against teams besides the bottom team in their group (which I think is an indicator of their current quality):

    - Azerbaijan: 4 points, but rather dismal goal difference (even if you exclude the Germany games)

    - Macedonia: 5 points, including an away win. Had 4 one-goal losses. Tough to beat.

    - Belarus: They were the worst team in their group. But they did get 4 points against the top 4, including a draw against France.

    - Georgia: 3 draws, respectable -6 GD (but then again couldn’t beat Moldova)

    Other notable:

    - Faroe Islands (pot 2): 5 points and finished above 2 teams.

I’ll predict a Georgia v Macedonia final, with Macedonia winning and qualifying for the Euros!

UEFA should buy the rights and call this "UEFA Game of Thrones".

Uefa could opt for a "host" per international break in the groups consisting of 3 teams, i.e. pot 3 countries host in September, pot 2 in October and top seeds play their home games in November ... as an example, this would be the fixture list of the group with Germany, England and Poland (the team that sits one out can organize a friendly on that MD instead):

    MD1 (6–8 Sep): Poland - Germany
    MD2 (9–11 Sep): Poland - England

    MD3 (11–13 Oct): England - Germany
    MD4 (14–16 Oct): England - Poland

    MD5 (15–17 Nov): Germany - Poland
    MD6 (18–20 Nov): Germany - England

Yet I'm guessing Uefa will schedule at least 1 NL match per international break for every team, like above, but often alternate between home teams when compiling the fixture list, e.g:

    MD1 (6–8 Sep): Poland - England
    MD2 (9–11 Sep): Germany - Poland

    MD3 (11–13 Oct): Germany - England
    MD4 (14–16 Oct): England - Poland

    MD5 (15–17 Nov): Poland - Germany
    MD6 (18–20 Nov): England - Germany

Kings landing was in Dubrovnik Croatia. :)
There are 10 cities and islands from Croatia that have been used regularly for GOT.

hmmm... I don't really see the advantage of having one country host a pair of matches at a time, but don't see any disadvantages either ,so whatever...

    ---

Here's the latest article from UEFA on the NL format.
    http://www.uefa.com/community/news/newsid=2079553.html

Don't know if the wording has changed or if I'm reading it differently but there seems to be more clarity on what happens if a league doesn't have 4 non-qualifiers in it to partake in the Euro2020 qualifying playoff.

When I read it now it seems clear that if, say, 1 league A and 4 league B teams haven't qualified for Euro2020 by finishing top 2 in their qualifying group, then the league A team will be grouped with 3 league C teams (who didn't win their pools) in one playoff bracket (not with the next best-ranked teams from league B). Here's the key paragraph:

"next best-ranked team in the league". That's pretty clear. Meaning the best non-qualified teams in, say, league B would play in the league B playoff.

Of course this makes sense that the higher ranked team gets the easier route to Euro 2020. Gives some more incentive for teams to try to get promoted and be in a higher league.

I don't find normal that the 12 weakest teams from league D get an automatic spot for euro.

16 teams are in league "D". If I play Devil's Advocate I would say that with the Euro having 24 teams then its okay to let the winner of a 16-team tournament get one spot.

Although its a bit unfair because whoever has home advantage in the League "D" playoffs is already halfway qualified. I mean, if Georgia is playing Macedonia the winner is most likely whoever is playing at home.

Then it's the biggest chance for these 16 teams from D league they ever had to get a spot at euro.
The euro with 24 teams is already silly. If in same time you don't have the 24 best teams advancing it becomes a joke.

That's it ... the 24 team EUROs are a poor joke already ... doesn't matter much if the canon fodder includes one League D side ... at a EURO final event, where 3 out of 4 teams advance, there'll always be crappy teams in the KO rounds ... one unbalanced group won't make much of a difference ... besides the KO phase already was terribly unbalanced in 2016 (without one League D side from the NL).

The NL formula promises to be a lot better than a 24 team EURO ... the NL offers the highest quality of play in Europe with the very best facing the very best ... the NL is what the EUROs were before the 80s when only 4 teams reached the final event ... and Uefa can easily expand the NL final event to 8 teams (or even 16 teams, i.e. what was perfect for the EUROs). Any NL games that aren't part of the final event can basically be viewed as qualifiers for the EUROs or the NL Final Four.

So its going to be the best 23 plus one team that might be as low as the 40th-best. meh, that's not a whole lot different than taking the 24 best.

For me the "pros" still outweigh the "cons" in terms of letting a league D team in the Euros.

Wow! That's useful. If this was FIFA they'd probably create that addendum 5 days after the group stage ended. :cautious:

I don't understand why Poland wasn't chosen in scenario #3.

Sounds very interesting. Especially because there will be no more boring friendly matches. On the other hand, it would not have affected the more tired players in the league. We will see how it will look, but I will be very happy to see such matches. Interestingly, the lvbet has already appeared special betting odds on the UEFA Natione League.

There is such a fine line between getting promoted and getting relegated that we might see an interesting composition of the respective leagues in about 2 or 4 years from now. Its very possible that all 3 teams in a pool could wind-up tied, which means goal difference could be the difference between being in league A or league C!

Of course that only adds to the intrigue. (Although, for the purposes of seeding, I don't think the NL will be as good at ranking teams as the UEFA NT coefficient is/was).

One thing still not clear to me is how do they rank teams that finish in the same positions within a pool? For e.g. how will they rank the 2 best third-place teams in League A to determine the top seeds for the Euro 2020 draw? e.g.2 how do they rank the group winners to determine home advantage in the NL playoffs?

Within each league (A, B, C and D), the overall ranking will be calculated based on position in the group then points, goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, wins, away wins, disciplinary points, coefficient ranking.
