This is more infuriating than the pk call. When Ronaldo gets the ball before the pass, Chiellini who is closest to him runs in to the box instead of closing him down and marking him. If Ronaldo doesn't comfortably cross that ball, that play doesn't happen. Anyway, I don't blame Buffon for getting heated. Sucks that that will be his last CL moment, similar to Zidane in 06. Chiellini ran out of the box because he anticipated kroos to send a short pass to kovacic instead of a cross. Matuidi left vázquez and was never engaged in the play again. Piss poor marking and awareness on matuidi in the most crucial play of the game. It was like after navy's mistake that lead to his goal, he told navas to hold his beer and watch this.... Anyway, I'm disappointed that not much has been made about the play that lead to that penalty. Matuidi should be getting ripped the same way Roberto Carlos did after 2006... Even though their three best defensive players in Lucio, Juan and Gilberto silva all dropped the ball by not picking up Henry, Roberto Carlos made 0 effort to do anything on the cross. I know it's not as sexy to discuss defensive lapses as it is "controversial" pk's or a red card given to a legend to potentially end his champions league career, but theresmore to the game than the superficial stuff.
