FIVE-STAR AL JAZIRA SEAL THE TITLE
Al Jazira wrapped the 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League title with a 5-0 routing of Hatta in round 24 at Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium. The win, coupled with Al Ahli's 2-2 draw against Sharjah means the gap at the top widens to 10 points and with just two rounds to play, it is now mathematically impossible for Al Ahli to catch Al Jazira in the title race.

Dubai/ Monday, May 1st, 2017: The second friendly match of UAE Youth National Team (players born 1999) versus Egypt was ended in a positive draw 2 – 2. The Players Ali Saleh and Tahnon Al Zaabi scored the two goals of UAE at minutes 20 and 74 respectively. The game was played on Friday evening at Theyab Awana Pitch within the framework of the White’s preparations for AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers next October.

The game was witnessed by UAE FA President, Eng. Marwan bin Ghalita; Vice President, Abdulla Al Jeneibi; Technical Director, Obaid Al Shamsi; Director of National Teams Department, Abdulqader Hassan; and Hassan Al Jasmi, Official Spokesperson.

The White will have another training camp from 11 to 13 May during which it will play a friendly game versus Japan on 12 May at Theyab Awana Pitch.

Holders Portugal narrowly outlast unlucky UAE
    (FIFA.com) 03 May 2017
    • Portugal defeat United Arab Emirates in winner-takes-all meeting
    • Pushed into the extra period thanks to Ali Karim's last-gasp equaliser
    • That goal meant Portugal could no longer top Group C, leaving them with a last-eight meeting against Brazil
Reigning champions Portugal are still alive at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017, but it took a nail-biting 2-1 win over United Arab Emirates in extra time to keep their title defence alive.

The European heavyweights were pushed to the limit by a disciplined and experienced UAE side that was chasing maiden qualification to the knockout stage.

A lone strike from Belchior just past the halfway point looked set to be the difference, only for UAE’s Ali Karim to sensationally equalise in the final minute.

However, Portugal scored what proved to be the match winner almost immediately after the restart through Bruno Novo.

The result eliminated the unlucky UAE and lifted Portugal into second place in Group C and setting up a potentially epic quarter-final match-up against old rivals Brazil on Thursday.

Diego Maradona returns to UAE football as manager of second-tier Fujairah

The east coast club finished fourth in the First Division this season, meaning they missed out on a return to the Arabian Gulf League at the first time of asking. Fujairah were last members of the UAE top flight for the 2015/16 campaign, but they finished 13th and were therefore relegated. That season, they won only seven matches from 26, tasting defeat 14 times. Even so, they missed out on survival by only one point.

Maradona arrived at Wasl in 2011 and made his mark with a headline-grabbing stint at the Zabeel Stadium. The Dubai club, seven-time UAE champions but without the trophy since 2007, finished a hugely disappointing eighth in the 2011/12 season. They also suffered an embarrassing defeat in the GCC Champions League final to Bahrain’s Al Muharraq. Maradona was dismissed on July 10 2012, midway through his two-year contract. However, he remained a Dubai resident, and later acted as a sports ambassador for the emirate.

Maradona’s greatest achievement was captaining Argentina to the 1986 Fifa World Cup crown, when he was credited for almost single-handedly lifting his country to the trophy. He also played an integral role in Napoli twice winning Italy’s Serie A, in the 1986/87 and 1989/90 season. Maradona managed the Argentina national team from 2008, guiding them to the 2010 World Cup, where they lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarter-finals. His contract was not renewed.
