Yeah, they looked good. Nice one touch passing, sharp and creative in attack. But the problem is the high turnover of "emerging" players. These players look good now, then they quickly disappear.

Ittihad's future attack looks promising though :D

Bahrain, the hosts, are looking at taking it more seriously this time around, looking to win it:

For the upcoming Olympic Teams Gulf Cup, the hosts have been drawn alongside the UAE and Kuwait in group 'A' for the preliminary round, while group 'B' features Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.

"There's not going to be one easy game for us in the Gulf Cup," Hudson had said recently about the opposition in the tournament.

Hudson strongly believes that Bahrain's Olympic team can win the crown and improve on their runner-up finish from last year's Olympic Teams Gulf Cup held in Doha.

"Last year was a different competition; we had an under-20 team then and now the tournament is for under-22 players. But most of the guys we had last year are still in our team this time around," Hudson explained

    Report from Bahrain 1:0 UAE

BAHRAIN battled past the UAE 1-0 last night to register a winning start to the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship, being held in the kingdom.
Hamad Al Dakheel scored the game's lone goal in the 21st minute to lift the hosts to the all-important win.
The result helped the Bahrainis place one foot in the semi-finals of this highly anticipated tournament. They will now hope to finish atop group 'A' with another win against Kuwait in their next game on Monday.
Prior to that clash, the Emiratis face a must-win affair when they clash with the Kuwaitis in their second tie scheduled for tomorrow.
Group 'B' features defending champions Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman. They begin action today with the Saudis going against the Qataris. The match is scheduled for a 7pm kick-off at the National Stadium in Riffa.
In Bahrain's triumph yesterday, Al Dakheel helped ease some nerves early on in the contest with a brilliant individual effort to register the tournament's first goal.
The talented Muharraq Club striker received the ball on the right flank, and then with a master-class dribble created some space for himself in the box as he outsmarted his Emirati marker.
Al Dakheel then fired the ball from an acute angle over Emirati goalkeeper Ahmad Alblooshi and into the roof of the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
Neither side threatened over the remainder of the half and Al Dakheel's strike was enough to give the Bahrainis the lead heading into the locker rooms.
After the re-start, the UAE were playing with a heightened sense of urgency and they enjoyed the better of the possession.
The Emiratis almost levelled the proceedings through Younes Ahmed Mubarak as he charged towards goal, hitting a short shot that bounced through the legs of Bahrain goalkeeper Ashraf Waheed. It wasn't hit with enough power, however, and Waheed was able to recover and stop the ball from crawling into the net.
UAE then had a goal off a 68th-minute free-kick disallowed as scorer Hamad Alhamadi was adjudged to have been off-side before connecting on the cross.
The Emiratis continued to press for an equaliser and had one last chance in stoppage time when substitute Yousef Al Sayed was left unmarked in the box and was picked out with a cross. His ensuing header was poor, however, and it bounced over the crossbar and well out of bounds.
Bahrain's scoring chances over the latter stages of the contest were few and far between, but the home side did well to stave off any and all challenges from their rivals.

The result gave Bahrain head coach Anthony Hudson his first victory after it was announced a few days ago that he would be taking over as the senior men's national team manager

    Saudi Arabia 1:0 Qatar

DEFENDING champions Saudi Arabia scored a 1-0 victory over Qatar yesterday in their opening group 'B' match in the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship.
Superstar player Saleh Al Jamaan scored in the 32nd minute to lift the victors to the all-important result.
Saudi claimed the full three points to move to the top of their division standings, as they vastly improved their chances of making it through to the ensuing semi-final stage.
Saudi can seal their berth with a win over Oman in their next game tomorrow.
The Qataris take on their Omani counterparts in their final group 'B' fixture on Tuesday.
Saudi relied heavily on their talented rising players that included the likes of Talal Isa, Abdulrahman Ghamdi, Ibrahim Al Tahir, Abdulla Al Ammar, Moataz Hawsawi and Mohammed Ibrahim, to name a few.
The Qataris fielded their top players such as Murad Naji, Abdulla Al Alawi, Ahmed Fadel, Mahdi Ali, Musab Al Khader and Saleh Bader.
The Saudis were in control for much of the opening half, with the fine play of Al Tahir and Al Ammar inspiring their team.
Their efforts were rewarded with the opening goal two minutes after the half-hour when Al Jamaan fired home.
The strike was enough to send the Saudis into the break with the slim advantage.
In the final 45 minutes, the Qataris raised their level and they began to threaten their rivals with some better chances at goal.
But despite their best efforts, the Qataris came up short and in the end were left to settle for the loss.
Following their victory, Saudi head coach Khalid Alkroni praised his team for the maturity they showed against their Qatari counterparts in claiming their hard-earned victory.
He said that they had a good game and they generated many opportunities as they were searching for a greater result, but in the end praised the players' fighting spirit in what were very difficult conditions to play in.
Qatar coach Julio Cesar said that the team lost the game in the first half when they conceded the match's lone goal. He praised his players for their better performance in the second half, although they did not succeed in finding the net.
The Qataris will now focus on winning their next and final group game against Oman

    Kuwait 1:1 UAE

THE UAE were held to a 1-1 draw by Kuwait last night in the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship, being played in the kingdom.
The fixture was the second for the Emiratis in group 'A' of the competition's preliminary round while it was Kuwait's first game of the tournament.
The result ensured Bahrain a spot in the semi-finals. The other spot will be decided between the Emiratis and Kuwaitis, and it will depend on the result of Bahrain's match against Kuwait tomorrow.
Salem Alrejaibi opened the scoring in the match as he put the UAE ahead five minutes into the second half. Sherida Shraideh then equalised just 10 minutes later off a free-kick to once again change the complexion of the match.
By sharing the points, both teams now trail hosts Bahrain on the group 'A' table.
Both teams had ample chances to open the scoring in the first half, but neither could provide the finishing touches and the hotly contested affair headed into the final 45 minutes deadlocked with no goals.
That changed quickly, however, when Alrejaibi fired home past Kuwaiti goalkeeper Abdulaziz Marzouk to give the Emiratis the coveted advantage.
Falling behind, Kuwait were forced to change things up a bit and were rewarded not long after in the 65th minute.
After being rewarded a free-kick just outside of the box in front of goal, Shraideh stepped up to take the shot. The rising young talent hit the dead ball low and his powerful attempt inadvertently grazed the feet of a couple of players on the Emirati wall. That changed the trajectoryv of his shot, which then sailed into the net right side of the net, much to the dismay of stunned UAE goalkeeper Ahmad Alblooshi.
Neither team could find a winning goal from there, despite having some opportunities. Their back lines did well to preserve the score up until the final whistle.
UAE head coach Ali Ibrahim said that a lack of concentration and some defensive mistakes cost his team the full three points. He added that his players are physically drained, considering that it was their second match in three nights and that both games have been played in very hot and humid conditions.
He admitted that they are now looking towards the result of the match between Bahrain and Kuwait and hoping for favourable results for their team in order to qualify for the semi-finals.
On his part, Kuwait head coach Abdulaziz Hamada thanked his players for their commitment and for the way they had fought back in the match after going behind.
He said that the contest was evenly fought between both teams for much of the way, and that a win could have been taken by any team.
Hamada added that the Kuwaitis will now be completely focused on winning the full three points when they take on their Bahraini counterparts in their next match tomorrow, as it is only with the victory will they surely move on to the competition's ensuing round.

    Saudi Arabia 2:0 Oman

SAUDI ARABIA defeated Oman 2-0 last night to book their berth in the semi-finals of the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship, being played in the kingdom.
It was their second win in as many games for the tournament's defending champions. They now move on to the last four as winners in group 'B', while Oman and Qatar are left to fight it out for the final spot.
They face off tomorrow on the last day of the tournament's preliminary round.
As group 'B' winners, the Saudis will feature in the second semi-final of the weekend on Friday against the runners-up of group 'A'.
The first contest in the last four will be on Thursday between the group 'A' winners and the group 'B' runners-up.
In Saudi's big win yesterday, the reigning cup holders scored both their goals in the final 45 minutes.
Mohammed Ebrahim opened their account in the 68th, and then Ebrahim Tahir scored their second three minutes from full time to secure the fine result.
The Saudis also relied heavily on the their other top players such as Abdulla Mohammed, Khalid Hussain, Saleh Al Jamaan, Abdulla Al Amar, Moataz Hawsawi and Raed Al Ghamdi, to name a few. The Omanis were led by Sami Mubarak Faraj, Hosni Obaid Al Busaidi, Ali Salem Obaid, Sami Hassani, Ali Al Busaidi, Mubarak Hamdi and Ahmad Nasser, amongst others.
    Opportunities
Both teams had only a few opportunities to open the scoring in the first half, with each side's defence doing well to stave off the opposing attackers.
It was only a matter of time for the Saudis to find the net, opening their account through Ebrahim with a powerful shot from outside of the penalty area.
Tahir's goal in the 87th minute was also with a well hit effort from beyond the box. Following the match, Saudi head coach Khaled Alkotri acknowledged the importance of winning all three points in the match, which lifted his team directly into the next round.
Alkotri added that his players will continue to keep focus on the task at hand in order to move into the final and defend their title.
Oman's head coach Philippe Burle of France congratulated the Saudis on the win, and said that they will work hard with the team's technical staff to correct their errors from the game in order to achieve the best positive outcome in their final match against Qatar and stay alive in the competition

    Bahrain 3:2 Kuwait

BAHRAIN outclassed Kuwait 3-2 last night to secure first place in group 'A' heading into the semi-finals of the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship, being held in the kingdom.
Braving sweltering conditions for yet another night, the tournament hosts put on a fine show while Kuwait did just enough to join their conquerors in the next round.
Abdulla Shallal and Abdulla Jawher Bakheet were both on target for the Bahrainis in the first half. They scored on either side of a Mohammed Al Fahed goal for Kuwait.
Abdulla Yousef then came on as a substitute after the break and supplied Bahrain's third.
Abdulrahman Alshammari later scored Kuwait's second goal - a crucial strike as it put his team through to the final four.
Following the result, Bahrain moved to solo first place in the group with six points while Kuwait and the UAE follow with a point apiece.
The Kuwaitis, however, march on having scored more goals in their two matches.
Already assured a berth in the semi-finals heading into yesterday's tie, the Bahrainis still did not ease up on their rivals, determined to take the number one spot in group 'A'.
Shallal opened Bahrain's account in the 20th minute, giving the nationals the lead with a brilliant header off a well-placed corner kick by skipper Isa Ghaleb.
Shallal was completely unmarked in the area and he made no mistake with his standing header, which flew directly into the top-left corner of the net.
Kuwait were back on level terms just six minutes later through an Al Fahed strike. The Kuwaiti ace received a short pass from teammate Abdulrahman Fahad, and after sizing up the Bahraini defence, unleashed a powerful low shot into the bottom-right of goal.
The Kuwaitis had that chance after an uncharacteristic mistake from Bahrain goalkeeper Ebrahim Luthfallah, who failed to clear a pass into the box which was instead collected by Fahad. The Kuwaiti then sent the pass to his teammate, who found the net.
Any celebrations for Kuwait were short lived, however, as the home side went right back in front another five minutes on.
Bakheet was this time the man on target. In a quick counter-attack, Bakheet was on the receiving end of a well-placed cross from teammate Mohammed Khaled Shaheen, which he did well to head home with a diving effort.
That was enough to send Bahrain into the half with the one-goal advantage, although it could have been more had Abbas Al Sari sent home his header in the face of goal. But Kuwait's Abdulaziz Marzouq was up to the task and he did well to punch the ball away from danger.
In the second half, towering young striker Yousef made it 3-1 to the home team after scoring with a chipped shot from an acute angle on the right of the box.
Then, after 72 minutes, Alshammari reduced the deficit to just one goal with a wonderful left-footed effort from outside the area.
Alshammari hit his powerful shot straight into the goal over the outstretched arms of Bahrain's Lufthallah, pegging the final score and giving Kuwait its all-important strike to join Bahrain in the last four as group 'A' runners-up.

    Qatar 0:3 Oman

OMAN routed Qatar 3-0 last night to claim the fourth and last berth in the semi-finals of the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship being held in Bahrain.
Three different players scored for the victors, including Abdulla Saleh Abdulhadi, Badar Nasib Saleem and Sami Khamis Al Hasani.
With the result, the Omanis secured second place in group 'B' of the tournament's preliminary round, being ranked behind Saudi Arabia.
They have also set up a clash with group 'A' winners and hosts Bahrain in the final four. The match is scheduled to be played tomorrow, while Saudi take on group 'A' runners-up Kuwait in the other semi-final on Friday.
Heading into yesterday's winner-take-all affair at the National Stadium in Riffa, both Oman and Qatar needed nothing less than a victory to advance to the next round. They had both earlier lost their opening fixtures to Saudi.
Abdulhadi helped calm any Omani nerves early on with his goal in the 14th minute that came off a quick counter.
After charging towards the goal on the right of the box, Abdulhadi needed to simply tap the ball into the net after Qatar goalkeeper Saoud Mubarak Al Khater failed to deal with a cross from the left wing.
Al Khater momentarily had his hands on the ball, but could not keep control and Abdulhadi was able to take it away and send it home.
That was enough to give Oman the narrow one-goal advantage heading into the break.
After the re-start, both teams were unable to add to the score line until the final stages of the contest.
Saleem got his name onto the score sheet after a brilliant two-man attack with Al Hasani.
With the strike partners threatening from either side of the area, Al Hasani supplied a perfect pass to his teammate who slotted home from close range to give his team the two-goal advantage.
Al Hasani then had his own strike count towards the final score. He fired home with only moments to spare in the fourth minute of stoppage time, also from close range after being left unmarked in the box. Al Hasani made no mistake with his effort, sending the ball into the roof of the net to peg the well-deserved 3-0 win.
Today is a rest day for the teams as the competition now heads into the knockout stages.
The first semi-final between the Bahrainis and Omanis is then set to be played tomorrow, followed by the Saudis and Kuwaitis clashing on Friday.
The match for fifth place, originally also set for tomorrow evening, has been called off.
The match for third place will then take place on Sunday, followed by the tournament finale on Monday.
Meanwhile, Bahrain's Ahmad Jaafar Ahmad Ibrahim was named by tournament sponsors Huawei as the Most Valuable Player in their win over Kuwait last Monday night. The Bahrainis won that match 3-2, and Ibrahim was presented with a prize after the game.

    Bahrain 2:0 Oman

BAHRAIN barged into the final of the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship last night with a well-deserved 2-0 victory over a battling Oman at the National Stadium in Riffa.
Substitute Mohammed Khaled and star midfielder Sayed Ahmed were both on target for the victors in the hotly contested affair.
Khaled found the net in the 66th minute just moments after coming on for starting striker Hamad Al Dakheel. Ahmed then supplied the dagger, heading home just four minutes from full time and sending Bahrain to their second successive final in the prestigious competition.
The Bahrainis are hoping that this is the year they claim their maiden title in the event. They now face the winner of the tournament's other semi-final match between defending champions Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, who square off tonight at 7pm at the same venue.
The final is scheduled to be played on Monday.
Bahrain and Saudi met in the title match of last year's edition of the tournament, which was held in Doha. The nationals lost 0-2, but their runner-up finish was Bahrain's best-ever and it was the first major achievement for the team under head coach Anthony Hudson.
"It was a very tough match tonight," Hudson said. "Oman were very strong, they posed a lot of problems for us, but I give credit to our players. They were tremendous tonight and we're all very happy to be in the final."
After a scoreless first half last night, Hudson called on his boys to raise their level following the re-start, and they responded, determined to make good on their dreams of battling for the championship at home.
Their efforts were rewarded with Khaled's opening goal, which came from inside the area just beyond the six-yard box.
Khaled received the ball from strike-partner Abdulla Yousef from the right, and was given enough time by the slacking Omani defence to find his footing and aim at goal. He made no mistake with his strike, sending the ball home to the bottom-left corner of the net and beating Omani goalkeeper Mahnad Al Zaabi.
Twenty minutes later, Ahmed doubled the hosts' advantage with a header right in front of goal after being picked out by skipper Isa Ghaleb, who provided a perfect cross from the left.
Ahmed rose above his marker Basim Alrajaibi to score and virtually ice the victory for his team.
Oman tried valiantly to mount a comeback after falling behind with Khaled's strike, but the Bahrainis stayed strong at the back and never wavered.
In the first half, each team had only a handful of real chances at goal as both sides were solid defensively and would not allow any penetration into their respective boxes.
Bahrain's best chance came two minutes from the half-time whistle, when captain Ghaleb nearly scored on a wonderfully hit free-kick from just outside the penalty area. Ghaleb's powerful left-footed shot was partially headed by the Omani wall, but it continued to swerve towards goal, being stopped only by the crossbar and preserving the goalless score.
Early in the second half, Oman's Ali Al Nahar almost put his team ahead in the 54th minute. But his shot from close range on the right of the area was tipped away by Bahrain goalkeeper Ashraf Waheed.

    Saudi Arabia 3:2 Kuwait

DEFENDING champions Saudi Arabia edged past Kuwait 3-2 last night to advance to the final of the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship.
The Saudis went ahead by three goals in the contest, but the Kuwaitis refused to go out without a fight and came to within one strike from leveling the scores.
Saleh Jamaan scored a first-half brace for the victors while Abdulrahman Al Ghamdi contributed Saudi's third.
Kuwait's goals were scored by Faraj Alzuaebi and Abdulrahman Alshammari, both before the 70th minute to make for a nail-biting final 20 minutes of action.
The Saudis now go on to face hosts Bahrain in a repeat of the final of last year's edition of the tournament, held in Doha. The Saudis won the title with a 2-0 score line and will be hoping to make a repeat of their success when the match takes place Monday at the National Stadium in Riffa.
Losing semi-finalists Kuwait and Oman will battle it out for the bronze medals tomorrow.
Saudi headed into yesterday's tie the favourites, and they lived up to their billing but were made to sweat before the final whistle.
Jamaan got them off on the right foot with an opening goal in the 16th minute. The star striker than doubled their advantage in the 37th with an opportunistic goal. Jamaan hit home after Kuwaiti goalkeeper Abdulaziz Marzouq failed to hold on to a free-kick. Jamaan pounced on the loose ball right in front of goal and slotted home to make it 2-0.
Jamaan's brace was to put his team ahead at the interval.
After the re-start, it took only seven minutes for the Saudis to add to the advantage and Al Ghamdi scored to make it 3-0.
Al Ghamdi's goal virtually assured the Saudis of the victory, but not without some drama before the end.
Kuwait fought back valiantly and scored back-to-back goals within the span of just five minutes to make things interesting.
Alzuaebi netted home in the 64th minute and then Alshammari gave his team life not long later.
The Kuwaitis tried hard to find an equaliser over the game's closing stages, but were unlucky not to find the finishing touch.
Following the match, Saudi's Jamaan was named the Most Valuable Player of the tie by title sponsors Huawei.
Meanwhile, Saudi coach Khaled Alkotri expressed his delight with qualifying for the title contest. He gave credit to the Kuwait side for their fighting spirit in the game, but praised his team for their efforts and said they deserve to be playing in the final.
On his part, Kuwait coach Abdulaziz Hamada said that their defensive errors cost them in the game. He was happy with the way they battled back and came one goal away from equalising, and congratulated Saudi for moving on to the final.

    Kuwait win 4:3 on penalties

KUWAIT clinched the bronze medals in the fifth Huawei GCC National Teams Under-23 Championship last night.
The Kuwaitis claimed the tournament's final podium place after defeating Oman 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
It was a goalless deadlock at the end of regular time. According to competition rules, the game went directly into penalties without having to play extra-time.
Saoud Alansari scored the decisive spot-kick. He came up with the winner in the Kuwaitis' seventh attempt of the nail-biting session, which featured as many missed and saved shots than there were goals.
Following the shootout, Kuwait were awarded their bronze medals by officials from the tournament's organising committee.
The winners of the gold and silver medals will be decided tonight when hosts Bahrain meet with defending champions Saudi Arabia in the final, to be held at the National Stadium in Riffa. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7pm.
In yesterday's clash, both teams had ample chances to go ahead during the match but neither could capitalise on their opportunities.
That paved the way for a tense and exciting penalty shootout, one that could have been won by either team.
Oman captain Badar Saleem was the first to step up for a shot, and he gave his team the early lead. After misses from Kuwaiti Ahmad Aldhefiri and Omani Sami Faraj, Mohammed Al Fahad levelled the scores with Kuwait's first goal of the night.
The scores remained tied up until 3-3 with only Kuwait's Abdulaziz Alsaleemi left to take his shot, but a poor and perhaps hurried attempt at the winner failed to make it home, hitting the left upright and bouncing away from danger to further extend the session.
Oman's Sami Al Hasani then failed to convert his ensuing attempt, as did Kuwaiti goalkeeper Abdulaziz Marzouq.
But Marzouq more than made amends for his miss, making a superb save on Oman's Hamood Al Sadi to keep the scores level. That set the stage for clinching shot from Alansari, who made no mistake with his effort to finally end the match and secure the bronze medals for his team.

BAHRAIN were last night crowned champions of the fifth Huawei GCC Under-23 Championship. The tournament hosts clinched the coveted crown for an historic first time in the competition's history after dethroning defending champions Saudi Arabia 1-0 in an exciting final played at the National Stadium in Riffa.
Hassan Jameel scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 31st minute.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa patronised the event.
Shaikh Nasser attended the match along with Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman and Bahrain Athletics Association president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and other high-ranking officials.
Shaikh Nasser and Shaikh Khalid were present from the opening kick-off, and at the end they presented both teams their respective trophies and medals.
l His Majesty King Hamad sent a cable of congratulations to Shaikh Nasser and the Bahrain team for their achievement.
Bahrain were given their penalty when Saudi goalkeeper Abdulla Hamdan took down Bahrain's Ahmed Jaafar in the area as both players challenged for possession.
Hamdan cleanly punched the ball away but then made contact with Jaafar, sending the diminutive playmaker to the ground.
Omani referee Yaser Naseeb Alrowahi blew his whistle without hesitation and Jameel stepped up to take the spot kick.
Jameel made no mistake with his left-footed shot, which he sent to the bottom-right corner of goal to give the home side the all-important lead. Saudi had a great chance to level the scores right before the half, but Abdulrahman Khaled completely misfired on his shot right in the face of goal.
In the final 45 minutes, a determined Saudi side had the Bahrainis on the back foot, controlling a majority of the possession and persistently pounding the home team with quality shot attempts.
Bahrain goalkeeper Ashraf Waheed was at his very best, however, and he made no less than four spectacular saves to keep Bahrain in the lead.
Waheed twice kept out headers from Abdulrahman Kamel, as well as a rocket of a shot from Mohamed Kano in the 74th minute.
Saudi star Saleh Al Jamaan then had a free-kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time sail just inches past the right post, and then moments later, a mad scramble at the face of goal almost produced an equaliser, but Bahrain held on.
