Gideon Zelalem looked like he had a nasty leg injury. Had to be helped off and wasn't putting any weight on it. I'm torn.... I want to see the boys do well and advance deep into the tournament, but that means RSL is missing some decent players longer.
Personally, I am all for this group going as far as they can. Not at all sure any of the players on the roster can turn around this RSL season. Let them gain the experience and come back stronger for a late season run, or next years RSL.
I watched the game on the Tivo yesterday. The defense stunk up the first ten minutes, then settled down to only a periodic half-meltdown. My kids said reddit folks were lambasting Herrera, but frankly it was the central defenders that stunk it up at the beginning of the game. Most of the play cut past Herrera with some great through balls by Ecuador. So far Sargent and Lennon have been the clear standout players. I'd love to see them go all the way and show how well they're doing. To do that, they've got to be way sharper in the first halves of games.
I want the US to win the U20 World Cup so that the rest of the soccer-playing world loses their collective mind. "First Trump, now the US won a World Cup?!?!?!? It's another sign of the apocalypse!!!!"
Well, considering you can probably count on one hand the number of countries that actually rate this tournament, I think very few minds will be lost. It's a fun tournament, but pretty insignificant in the world of soccer.
Which is all true, but still it's the US winning a FIFA tournament. Only the big soccer powers of the world are supposed to win FIFA tournaments and if the US crashes the show, people will take notice. Or else bitch about the refs being paid off by Trump.
Poop! These games early in the night/morning always mess me up. Anyway, US wins, 1-0. Goal by Sargent (who else?). Acosta, Herrera and Lennon started with Glad coming on in the 84th minute as a sub. Herrera picks up a yellow card. US is on top in their group with four point, followed by Senegal and Saudi Arabia with three and Ecuador with 1. If the US wins or ties their next game with Saudi Arabia, we go thru to the next round. Yay!
I have a stack of VHS tapes with classic games on it. North Korea-Portugal and England-West Germany from 1966; Brazil-Italy from 1970 and again from 1982; Brazil-France from 1958; USA-Norway women from 1991; USA-Portugal and USA-Mexico from 2002; USA-Colombia from 1994; several others. I have to keep a VCR working for those at least.
You know, there are ways of transferring VHS to DVD so you don't have to be the only Luddite in the neighborhood (and you could share). But then, there are still people out there who like rotary dial phones, black-and-white TVs and AOL dial-ups, so whatever floats your boat.
One of the best things my brother did for my love of the game was record every 1994 World Cup game. I remember driving to Southern California as a kid one year and putting those tapes into the TV we lugged with us. I was hooked
So four points should put us thru. England, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France, Portugal to name a few of the teams in this tournament.
That's pretty cool, I wish that I would have been more into soccer 2002 was the first one I had paid some attention to and would have watched more of it or at least recorded them.
For the '02 cup I remember going to Walmart with a co-worker to use his wife's discount to buy a bigger TV just to watch it. Good times. I'm a fan of the times for this tournament since it's perfect for someone who works graves like me. I'll probably miss the game Sunday morning though. I have the kids and I'm not sure I want to wake up early to catch it. Aside from that, it's been nice to easily catch the games.
Yet they are in the tournament and I am sure each nation is there to win. So Lennon scores the only US goal in helping them win the group. Also Glad got about 40 minutes and should start against New Zealand. Four RSL players for the United States, pretty impresssive.
The 2002 world cup was the perfect launch pad for my true love of soccer. I had torn my rectus femoris quad muscle playing for my high school that spring and started my rehab and PT at TOSH right as the world cup started. My rehab and PT was very early in the morning and I was able to catch at least one world cup game on the tv's around TOSH while I did my rehab and PT.
