Because I wonder such things, I wondered recently who the guys were who were major U20 contributors who didn't make it to the "next level." So, we'll start with a question and I'll fill in the answers in the next day or so. Who do you figure had the most U20 callups without a: 1) MNT cap 2) Pro contract To make this semi-pertinent, let's go no further back than Sigi's 2005 team, when the pool started to expand more toward current levels. If you, like me, have this all spreadsheeted and stuff, don't cheat!
Cody Cropper for #1, Javan Torre for #2? Don't know if that's right but throwing it out there. Cropper does have a few MNT callups but no caps.
OOOOOOOOOH..............this is a tough one. You know who had a ton of U20 caps? Romain Gall. Still must be close to the top of all-time U20 goal-scorers too. The second one is hard because in the modern era most U20ers go on to sign pro deals. I wonder if its some goalkeeper. I see people guessing Javan Torre. Didn't he go to Germany or something? Changed his name to Javan Howell? Something like that. Alright I'm going to guess a goalkeeper, but I know its wrong. [I like the Sarkodie guess by bshredder on that one...................] So................. !) Romain Gall 2) Steve Sandbo
Bloggin' Jules Valentin got a lot of YNT caps back in the day so he's a contender for most appearances without a cap. Nathan Sturgis, too. He was part of multiple cycles, if I recall. As for the other, I think Ofori Sarkodie is a good answer and so is Jovan Torre. But how about Eder Arreola? A backup GK might get the nod there, too. Great idea for a thread, Dave. Props to you!
My edit added that extra sentence about Cropper, with no names changed. Original post had Cropper and Torre -- in fact, I put Torre first for #2 within seconds, then had to think a bit about #1. I don't think Cropper is the correct answer anyway.
Thanks for playing! Here are your answers, plus some bonus data. I hope all my info is correct... My records have Andrew Kartunen (2005) with 12 callups and no pro contract. Six guys -- Nathan Sturgis (2005), Danny Cruz (2005), Tim Ward (2005), Brian Perk (2005), Shaq Moore (2015) and John Requejo (2015) -- have 12 callups but no cap. Obvious that could still change for at least one of them, most likely Shaq. You actually have to go pretty far down the lists to find field players with multiple U20 callups but no pro contract. My records have that "winner" as Jose Altamirano, with 5 callups over two cycles. @bshredder is right that the "Boss" callup blows up this game a little. He had 18 callups over two cycles. And you all are WAY too hard on Javan Torre. Here's the cycle-specific data: 2005 Kartunen (12 callups, no caps, no contract) Sturgis (12 callus, no cap) Robby Rogers (3 callups, no contract — field player) 2007 Ward & Igwe (10 callups, no cap) Sandbo (4 callups, no contract Cameron Brown & Hidalgo (2 callups, no contract — field player) 2009 Cruz, Ward & Perk (12 calls, no cap) Altamirano & Wenzel (3 callups, no contract -- field player) 2011 Okugo & Powers (9 callups, no cap) Altamirano, Victor Chavez & Palodichuk (2 callups, no contract) 2013 Cuevas & Ocegueda (11 callups, no cap) Nobody without a job had more than 1 callup 2015 Shaq & Requejo (12), plus Donovan (11), have more caps than the first capped guy with the most, Miazga (10). Of course these numbers could change. Gasper had 3 callups and I believe has another year left at Maryland.
What was the right answer to the first question? Most U20 callups without a USMNT cap. Maybe I missed it in your response here................................ I see a lot of Cody Cropper guesses, which isn't right. According to wikipedia Romain Gall had 25 U20 caps, which is a ton. I asked myself a tough question yesterday. Which player born after 1980 has the most full USMNT caps without a single U20 cap? That had me thinking for a while before I stumbled onto what I think is the right answer. Its not so easy without cheating.
I would guess it's one of these three: Alejandro Bedoya - 66 caps Geoff Cameron - 55 caps Graham Zusi - 55 caps All of them were four-year college players who weren't highly regarded coming out of HS and I don't remember any of them having much of a YNT career.
Jones has several U20 caps. Sure, they were for Germany, but I stand by my answers. Jones doesn't count.
Yes, I believe the answer is Alejandro Bedoya. 2nd place I think.....................................is Kyle Beckerman at 58. He would have had U20 caps, but broke his leg while preparations for his U20 campaign were underway. I think he never had a U20 cap. Right? He played U16, U17, U23, and USMNT. Skipped over U20? I think I'm right about that. Perhaps the timing isn't right on the broken leg. Maybe it was just a coach's choice. Kyle was more of a #10 and attacking player as a teenager, and that '01 U20 team was loaded with attacking talent. Donovan, Beasley, Convey, Davis, etc. And the central midfield areas were controlled by Kyle Martino and company. A really deep roster.
Speaking of which, here's a new question for you: Who are the youngest players, by year of birth, NOT named Julian Green to make a World Cup roster without a single USYNT appearance? (It's not a trick question -- there are two. Or ... maybe it is a trick question, and there aren't? But ... it's not a trick question.)
Ooohhhh.... I'm gonna go with Jose Francisco Torres (10/29/87), who was 22 when he made the US World Cup team in 2010. I'm pretty sure he hadn't played for any US YNTs before that.
Ack. I meant youngest as in their age today, not youngest at the time. (I just excluded Green because it would be too easy.) But now I feel obligated to confirm the answer to your question, too...
