So he can score against a fourth tier semi-amateur team. It's something.

I'm glad he scored, but he better score on a gimme like that.

I give him credit for positioning, solely because I'm tired of how many millionaires would have screwed it up.

That was painful to watch. Poor Besiktas.

Turkish football is a mess. Basaksehir is the only team to advance from the CL/EL group stages (with a -2 GD), and even that took a 90th-minute winner against a Gladbach team that is probably happy to turn their focus entirely to the league.

Indeed. It is a bit hard for me to truly judge Boyd at this point. His team is truly horrible... That was one of the worst performances by a right back (Kalafat #34) that I have seen in a while. You may want to cover Jota on the back post after he scorches you on the 1st goal. Seriously, Jota had a hat trick and all three were sitters. He could have had one more but finally Uysal got in his way. The header for the 3rd goal was relative uncontested... and even young Owen had an uncontested header on a cross that went off the crossbar. To make matters worse... it seemed like every offensive player on Besiktas thought they had to do it all themselves... taking low percentage shots from outside the 18 instead of passing. Boyd flashed on a couple of occasions... but nothing to write home about. The few times they did get him the ball it seemed to be near the boundary when covered by two players and his teammates often failed to give him an option to pass out of the pressure. He also looked quite lazy on D... which isn't surprising... as it seems to be a bit of a hallmark with respect to offensive USMNT players. In short, that was ugly and Boyd needs to try and find a way out... That being said, I am not sure there is much of a demand for his services.

Boyd stays on the bench as Besiktas lose 2-0 at home to Malatyaspor.

Second leg of their Turkish Cup tie against that 4th-division team on Wednesday. Boyd will probably start that one.

It’s hard to rate a player when he doesn’t play.

Honestly the Turkish league is a boring league to watch. Surprising that he took his skill set there.

If I was a wing player that had his skill set, I would play Dutch, Austria or Germany.

By the way if I was a winger, the first place I would go is to RBSalzburg.. their open style seems fun.

My biggest fear is that he goes to MLS after he fails in Turkey

The problem is, well, they have to want you.

Agreed but dont let that take away from my suggestion. As a player you must find a team that suits your style of play when you are a free transfer. Players tend to not do enough research in situations like these.

Boyd wasn't on a free. He was sold for €2.4 million.

You can only go where the interest is, and Boyd's loan in Turkey last season was the first time he'd ever really done anything of note in Europe. In those circumstances, when Besiktas calls, you answer.

True but players have the right to not agree to terms with a certain team due to their style of play right? He could have balked at the idea correct?

Theoretically, sure. But he's probably getting paid a lot better at Besiktas than he was at Vitoria, and Vitoria very clearly did not rate him or want him around.

So it's either get paid and go to a historic Turkish club or rot in the reserves of an upper-to-mid-table Portuguese club.

Not really much of a decision to be made. Even if he isn't thriving at Besiktas (and I don't think anyone would argue that he is), it was still the right move given his options.

At this point I suspect Beşiktaş can't be too happy about those €2.4m.
