IDK, I mean it's hit or miss. If you don't mind complete senseless violence(and I don't) it's entertaining. Can't say that I ever watch a show just for really hot women, what's the point? You can see that anywhere

It's not meant to be, its supposed to have a comic book like/300 feel. Haven't seen the prequel and really feel bad for the actor as i was a big fan of GOS. New guy will def be weird.

If you want a realistic show that is similar then i suggest Rome (HBO/BBC collab). It's on a whole different level of awesome.

Hmm... neither sound like my sort of thing, tbh. I grew up on 'I, Claudius', (based on the book of the same name by Robert Graves), on the BBC in the early 70's.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr1oJj0Iivw"]YouTube - I Claudius (Ep 01/12) _ A touch of murder[/ame]

For modern viewers it probably appears too much like a play. Indeed, there's certainly no element of 'realism' in the sense the phrase is used now but, to my mind, it contains more essential 'truth', (in the dramatic sense), than a lot of the modern stuff.

This is the first episode of 12 and includes the brilliant Sian Phillips, (the one time wife of Peter O'Toole), as Livia. Now SHE is a great literary creation, albeit based on a real historical character. A hint... if that woman offers you a fig, do NOT eat it :D

Actually, I've just remembered, the series also includes the first on-screen appearances of someone you fellas might recognise, as Sejanus, Captain of the Praetorian guard.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDwC7YH-1jM"]YouTube - Sejanus (Picard) finally gets it[/ame]

And someone else, seen a few years later with something bursting out of his chest. In this scene he's giving the results of his latest match, which, essentially, was...

Caligula - 1 Neptune - 0 (away goals not counting double of course:))

Great stuff and worth watching if you've half a mind which, (let's be honest), most of you have :D

well its certainly dramatic if anything, and sadly the show was too expensive to produce and wasnt getting rating so it doesnt get to Caligula.

Without doing an extensive search for the best clip, heres one i found quickly. Its basically the beginning of Marc Antony and Agustus rivalry.

OK, now, regardless of whether you like James Cordern, (I can take him or leave him, tbh), THIS is funny. Well, if you know most of the characters it is. Folks outside the UK might struggle with some of them.

I managed to fall asleep between 10 and 12 when all the best Comic Relief stuff is on! Serves me right for staying up until 2 watching Moyles on the webcam - incredible thing he and Dave Vitty did. For our non-UK based chums, Chris Moyles and his sidekick hosted a radio show on the flagship BBC radio station from 6.30 Wednesday to 10.30 Friday, raising £2.4m and getting a world record in the process!

Great video, Dave. Had me laughing a lot (though never heard of smithy before).

Game of Thrones, the first book in the: A song of Ice and Fire Series has made it to HBO as a series, it is really good. Season 2(which will be Book2), was picked up after one episode.

All of the fans of the books I know love the show so far, as do those who have not read it, and gave it a shot.

It had been on my watch list for a while, just never got around to finding enough time to start a new saga.

Enjoyed episode 1 (am a huge Sean Bean fan) and have episode 2 looming.

After reading this thread I did watch Spartacus finally (all of B&S and most of GotA so far thanks to Netflix). Enjoyable show, but unecessary amounts of Skinemax content - feels like every show on these movie channels now has to raise the ante to the point it's closer to hardcore than softcore porn and well, there's specialist sites/channels for that - don't need to see it when I'm trying to eat some pizza and watch tv with the lady.

Battles were fun, though I refuse to believe that Gladiators left their feet quite as much as they to in this show (seems to me to be instant death in the arena). Oh and I want the name of their Ludus dentist - with all those bloody face smashing knocks their teeth are quite remarkable!

Can't let this post pass without commenting on the generally abysmal wooden acting though - I know you don't expect gladiators to be RSC quality, but it did detract from the general enjoyment. I like John Hannah in this, but the lead gladiators were, to a man, hard to sit through.

Will definitely watch the new season though as it is, like I said, enjoyable stuff. Thanks for the tip guys!

GoT has been very faithful to the book. I was worried, because book 1 is the slowest and hardest to get into, but they did a great job. Some of the characters are just so easy to hate already, just like in the books, can't wait to see things develop.

I watched Blood and Sand and had the same reaction. The acting was limited and the violence and nudity was just so over the top to appeal to the 14 year olds I guess. I didn't like it enough to even bother with the next season.

I've caught a few of these things and, IMO, they're wall-to-wall crap from start to finish. Of course, I'm a miserable old git as you all know but, even so.

BTW, regarding these gladiator johnnies... did you know they were all vegetarians, if not vegans?

Also The Killing on HBO is OK, Rubicon was way better but for some reason it was cancelled.

    On to comedy:

Sports Show with Norm McDonald is GOLD!!!!

If you guys like burnout stuff Workaholics may be your thing, not the best but watchable.

And big-ups to Kaz for recommending Archer, simply amazing.

yep. And they ate wood and ash to boost their calcium intake to keep their bones strong.

Think I'll stick to the diet that utilizes all of my teeth types and is lighter on mineral matter :)

Finally got done with The Wire (from start to end in a month or so thanks to HBO Go).

    Superlative.

I have Oz, Deadwood and Sopranos up next, but can't see how anything will live up to what I just saw. 5 tightly packed series with no drop off in quality (if anything the later characters were even more compelling than the first wave).

Plenty of depth and overall gritty reality with lots of grey and little black and white which is as it should be.

Also loved the fact that two of the key figures in a show about the Baltimore drug scene were played by Brits :D

Such quality, makes most shows i watch atm seem like complete shit.

I'm also gonna start sopranos from start to finish, been a couple years so I'm relatively fresh, also the things you notice the second and third time around are unbelievably fantastic, it's a very very deeply layered program.

Oh and is anybody else in love with Treme (same guy who made The Wire).

A friend of mine used to rave about Deadwood, but I've yet to check it out. But Oz is excellent, and The Sopranos is - for me - the only thing that even comes close to The Wire, though I'd pick McNulty et al every time.

I started on Treme, but couldn't get into it. Will try again one day.

Not TV, but I'm currently watching Shaun of the Dead for maybe the 20th time. One of the best films of the last 10 years, absolutely brilliant.

I far, far, far preferred Paul over Hot Fuzz! Hot Fuzz was good in its own right but a huge drop down from Shaun. Still, Paul wasn't part of the 'Blood and Ice Cream' trilogy which is Shaun, Hot Fuzz, and World's End, which I can't wait for :D
