Univision I can understand doing it. TNT though went to a feed of something they exclusively had behind a paywall. So I think that deserves more of a tip of the cap.
The one major difference I see when streaming services to satellite/cable related to spoilers is file time. I always add extra time to my DVR recordings on DTV. And for knockout games, I add 90 minutes extra. The file length is moot relative to spoilers because I set the extra time. But for streaming, the file length when fast forwarding through half-time can spoil a game. For example, ESPN+ has DFB, FA Cup, and Carling Cup. If any of those specific games got to ET or PSO, I see the file is longer, which is a kind of spoiler. If I really want to avoid that then I have to watch half-time or do some other junk for 15 minutes. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a major problem (esp. since ESPN+ and other streaming services that have on-demand functions save us from having to mess with a DVR).
What I do on those at halftime is FF without looking. I've watched enough matches on all the services to intuitively know how long to hold down the button, more or less. I'll blindly FF for a bit, wait a second or two for the length bar to disappear from the screen, and then look. Typically I end up missing part of the first minute of the second half, but not much more. I do the same thing when FFing during the match during dead ball situations, knowing one or two clicks of the button will move me forward 10-20 seconds. And of course I also don't look initially when I first load the match.
Good point. One that's been made a few times before. And hopefully something about the sports oriented streaming providers would think about… i.e. how to mitigate.
This brings up another good point, that's also been raised in the past. Between the various providers, there's little uniformity in the UI Controls for fast forwarding or backup. The buttons/functionality vary. Some of them don't even have buttons for that… they make you drag the little dot on the slider bar... which obviously forces you to see the full duration of the match. BIG room for improvement here IMHO.
It hasn't been the Carling Cup for a long time. It's the Carabao Cup now. You don't need to know intuitively. Assuming you have a phone or other device that can time with hundredths of seconds, you can time and write down how long it takes to FF 15 minutes if it's done continuously like you would from TV. If it's one click = 10 seconds, you need 90 clicks for halftime.
For the few of us with Dish Network... ...Univision and Dish have ended their dispute. All Spanish Channels that carry the Champions League are back in HD,
Ugh. Until today, all of the UCL matches on TNT had been blessedly spoiler-free during game action for other matches going on at the same time. That ended during the Tottenham-Man City match when they decided to pop up the score of Liverpool-Porto at the bottom of the screen with a "watch on B/R Live" promo. So for those of you who want to watch both matches without being spoiled on the other, you now need to watch the TNT match last.
It will be interesting to see how the ratings end up (and split up) for today's tasty match ups. ManU -Barca could get fantastic ratings although the more intriguing match may end up being Ajax-Juve on Galavision. And people love watching Ronaldo.
Good to know. Personally, I prefer it if they update the other match, I don't have time to watch both anyway, and I'm just glad if I can get one in spoiler free.
Yeah I'm surprised they don't offer scores of other matches in this day and age. Particularly when that other match is often on another network.
Spoiler alert about spoiler alerts... ...on Galavision the announcers are updating what is happening in the other match. So if you don't want to know what is going on in the other match I recommend not listening to the audio.
Not specifically about Turner's coverage, but anyone else notice how the main feed didn't show us any replays of incidents requiring a VAR review until after the VAR people made their decision [Goal/No goal/Ref should look at it]? How annoying was that? Not to mention incredibly nerve-wracking! While you're not showing us any replays, we are thinking there is something seriously wrong with the goal that was just scored. So we are left waiting another minute to begin celebrating or whatever.
Not to spoil anything for anyone but there was a game where a goal was called back due to it being offside. And replays of it were shown and it was correct. Is that the one you are talking about?
I think I know which one you are talking about. For that call the VAR decision was made so quickly, I honestly didn't notice whether we got a replay of the incident before the decision was made or not. But there were at least 2 other incidents in the same game where the decision took quite a bit longer. I'm not saying they didn't show replays at all. They showed us many. They just waited until after the VAR made a decision. We were left in the dark over why they were reviewing - kinda like the fans in the stadium.
Yeah, some of the games showed replays while VAR was happening and others didn't. Thought it was maybe a decision made to not show it for some reason, but that proved to not be the case. I find UEFA's production to be quite a bit weaker than it should be, while still being quite good. They seem to miss more action than they should and show dramatic closeups instead. Small nitpick.
I am just going to give them the benefit of the doubt because VAR is still a relatively new thing. Growing pains are expected as everyone gets used to the new technology and the new pacing of decisions.
I guess, but we are just talking about showing a replay or two during a time when everyone is just standing around on the pitch. While VAR is new, it doesn’t really create a new dimension in terms of telecasting a match. All it is, is a break in the action after something really interesting just happened. So logically you show a replay of that really interesting thing. Shouldn’t take months to figure this out.
I am still not sure which moments were like this or which game you are referring to so it is difficult for me to comment.
No doubt posted somewhere in this forum but I will never find it on short notice. What's the easiest way to watch CL game today in Canada? Is it on a regular TV channel?
Rightly so I guess. Ugly scenes. Especially the armored vehicles mowing down protesters. Hard to imagine these next few days being anything other than scary & dangerous.
