So, hold up here a minute.

It's unsafe to put a soccer stadium on (presumably because dirt needs to be moved around)...

...but it's perfectly fine to be playing golf on top of it?????

Is it just me that sees a hole in that logic?

To borrow the old joke, "I'm no scientist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!". It's along the lines of an explanation someone gave about the presence of asbestos and the health concerns that went with it. If it's dormant, asbestos is not a problem, but when it's disturbed, that's when the airborne particles can become hazardous if inhaled by people. Anyone care to expand on that, or correct me if I'm wrong? Like I said, I'm no expert in the field; just going off what I heard in a television interview many years ago.

Reminds me of the McKalla Place site where, in theory, Austin will be building a stadium. It was previously a toxic waste site which the city spent 20 or 30 million bucks to "remediate"

Then, a couple years ago, someone started some kind of digging there and the ground spontaneously ignited.

So sure, perfect place to bring the wife and kids.

But as someone pointed out not long ago, all that's really available.for these kinds of projects are brownfields (or, in Miami, former brownfield) and it's rare indeed to.find one where serious damage wasnt swept under the carpet years and years ago.

Article says it was previously a dumping ground for incinerator ash and so the golf course would have been afterward. In similar situations, solid waste dumps were capped by green space and vents for methane release were installed.

In this case, maybe the law changed what the acceptable level of arsenic was after the golf course opened. But, now, doing any construction would disturb it and potentially release to groundwater, etc.

While I can't speak to the particulars in Miami what you're saying is essentially correct depending on the contaminant. Many older properties and brownfield sites contain materials that once disturbed become airborne, exposed to rain and a risk for mixing with storm water runoff, becoming more aggressive in leaching, etc. It's the land disturbance activity and site prep (boring for wells, utilities, piling, etc.) that risks agitating the contaminant.

"Inter Miami officials previously reported the clean up cost in the range of $35 million. Mayor Suarez says the most recent estimate for a proper cleaning of the site is at $50 million".

Not that I'm an expert on Miami politics and I'm not saying they are corrupt but 15 million more to clean up a site is ....

Probably had to be bid to a company in order to meet a quota of going to an underutilized business zone. However said company probably didn't have the in-house expertise and had to sub it out and so 40% of the 15 million is probably mark-up.

Hope nobody made any divots while playing golf. They may have gotten a lot more than a dirty club.

    Different topic...

Mrs. Bluecat and I are currently sitting at the gate at the Portland airport, waiting on a delayed flight back to the Twins...

Somebody in the Timbers marketing department really needs to beef up their presence here...

I come to this conclusion after walking around all five concourse (B was pretty easy to navigate), the Timber gear available was limited to one shelf in one store that held...

Two youth size T-shirts, three stuffed bears with a flannel shirt and four flat mini-soccer balls.

The airport did, however, contain enough Duck and Beaver gear to supply every student at those fine institutions with a free shirt.

This was me 20 years ago in DIA. We passed through on the way back from my wife grandmother's funeral (we were still living in the Seattle area then). I was disappointed to find out the sports shop in the airport had no Rapids gear. I posted that on the Rapids forum they used to run on their website (this was the pre/early BigSoccer days). Got an email (or maybe the call was first) from then Rapids GK Ian Feuer a few days later saying he'd seen my post offering to send me a shirt, which he did. We kept in contact for a few years, he even sent me a West Ham polo shirt and a few West Ham programs when he ended up playing over there. His Mom even called us a few times since he was in England and calls (back then ) weren't cheap.
