Try for Gold Top US Rugby Book

    By Allyn Freeman

“Try For The Gold” continues to sell well, becoming the most successful US rugby history book of all time. Praise has come from sports scholars, coaches, and players, most of whom never fully knew the exciting story of America’s two rugby gold medals from Antwerp (1920) or, the more exciting narrative of Paris (1924).

Names long lost to history, like Alan Valentine (Swarthmore, Rhodes Scholar), Norman Cleveland (Stanford), and William Muldoon (Santa Clara) come to life in this thrilling narrative.

The book is only available online at www.tryforthegold.com since it was not feasible to attempt book chain distribution for such a niche item. But, we wanted to see how it “might” look in a book store so we visited our local, independent retailer: Three Lives & Company in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. (See photo). Of important note, in its 33-years in existence, I am the only customer who ordered a sports book (“Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy”), which represented the only sports book ever sold by the store.

We left a few copies of “Try For the Gold” and the owner, the affable Toby Cox, said that if these were ever purchased, he might consider opening up an entire section for just rugby books! Three Lives & Co., 154 West 10th Street, New York, 212-741-2069.
