I went to a large southern public university for undergrad and then to an Ivy League law school. One of the things that surprised me a bit (I suppose it shouldn't have done so at all) was how many of my classmates already knew each other --- and not just from their Ivy undergrads but even Exeter, Choate, Sidwell Friends, etc., etc.

It's funny, my wife had a flight this morning out of SFO, and she asked the TSA folks if they were getting paid, and they said, yes, they're privatized and they're getting paid. I was like, wtf, who is privatizing this thing, but sure enough, there are a handful of airports that have private contractors doing security under guidance from TSA, and those contractors are paying their employees. The list is here - https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/screening-partnerships - 22 airports. Most of the airports are small - I don't know any scheduled flights out of Sonoma County, and somehow there's three airports around Yellowstone on the list - but there are a few medium-to-large cities there. MLS cities on the list include Kansas City and Orlando (but I guess that's not the big airport in Orlando?), and of course SFO is one of the top ten busiest airports in the US, a hub for United and has a lot of flights to Asia. Normally I'm leery of privatizing functions like this - it's usually a money grab for some contractor to take their cut and provide the minimal possible service - but when the guys running the government are actively trying to destroy people's confidence in these public functions, it's nice to have a backup plan.
Doncha think contractors know that? As a matter of fact, follow the money, very likely your hero contractor is contributing to a Republican.
What happens when those companies, who aren’t getting paid by DHS, run out of money and can’t make payroll?

“The president is way stuck on stupid right now. There is no mayor in America in his-her right mind that would ever think about shutting down the government.” — Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), in an interview on MSNBC. I disagree with Landrieu though..... The president is way stuck on stupid all the time......
To expand on this One of the things that keeps federal TSA agents showing up for work when they’re not getting paid is that if they quit and find another job....they will likely be foregoing the pension they’ve been accruing since they started with the TSA. While I cannot guarantee it, I find it highly unlikely a private “TSA agent” gets the same type of pension. Which means the day they miss a paycheck....they go to work as a mall cop.

I'm convinced that the 80s and 90s produced a CEO worship that's inherently obvious now when you look at certain media coverage. On a related note, I saw a NY TImes article at breakfast that talked about millennials liking luxury goods but can't afford them. Well, duh. Hard to afford nice things when pay has been stagnant for years.
You realize the airlines ran security before 9/11, right? And that most foreign airport management companies provide their own security or contract security augmented by men with automatic weapons sometimes? If only MCO had contractors and not Orlando Sanford...
I'm not one to assume that being on the Left absolves one of bigotry. A lot of white Leftists blamed "identity politics" ( or excused "economic anxiety") for a lot of Trump's white support. Basically blaming Clinton, the Dems, Black Lives Matter, or whomever for "making" white people default to racism.
The worst part was that money was deemed the only measure of success and elevated the private sector as capable of being efficient and profitable. For the most part we know that neither premise is true, but, both in MSM and in the public's mind, both keep ringing as axioms. Public Sector baaaaad, Poor people lazy.
Given that New Orleans city government is usually in a state of shambling disorganization, that's saying something.
Having said that, Landrieu has been credited for giving some semblance of organization to the NO city hall. I will always be grateful to him for the removal of the confederates statues.
Man, I've heard some shit come out of the mouths of white progressives that could've come out of the mouths of my cracker relatives.
