you and @HeadBurn3r are bringing me down. I can't believe we bought Pastore when 10 mil or so more would have gotten us Ziyech.
True. He's been playing mostly out wide this season and he's blossomed. Oh well, too late now, I'm sure his price has gone waaaaaaay up.
Are we going to have to see a Ziyech video every time he does something this whole season? That ship has sailed. Move on boys.
If we're talking about starter acquisitions , I have no idea how people don't think CB should be our number 1 priority. Hopefully Jesus and Perotti are sold in Jan , and we can bring in someone.
Been saying this since the preseason friendlies. Was told that Marcano was that guy the best defender in Portugal blah blah blah that we needed moar wingers. Personally I will never stop longing for Marquinhos return.
To be fair to Marcano, he deserves more time before we judge him , but it doesn't look like he's challenging Fazio for a starting position anytime soon , and EDF brought on Jesus against Empoli + played him against Plzen. I essentially look at our roster as such: Veteran: GK- Mirante RB- CB- Fazio CB-Marcano LB- Kolarov DM- De Rossi CM- CAM- RW- LW- Perotti CF- Dzeko Sell: Perotti (Jan) , Fazio (summer) , and see what Dzeko/Kolarov look like at the end of the season. Potential targets: Kompany, Vertonghen, Dembele, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata , David Luiz (all expiring contracts). I'd say Vertonghen is the likeliest to stay , and definitely the best of the bunch, but any of them would help for 1-2 years , and I don't think most of them will stay at their current clubs. Prime players: GK- Olsen RB- Florenzi CB- Manolas CB- Jesus LB- Santon DM- Nzonzi CM- CAM- Pastore RW- LW- SES CF- Sell: Jesus and possibly SES (Bruno/Gonalons/Defrel will bring in money next summer as well) Targets: CB , RW Young core/pieces: GK- Fuzato RB- Karsdorp CB- CB- Bianda LB- Pellegrini DM- CM- Cristante , Pellegrini , Gerson , Riccardi CAM- Zaniolo , Coric LW- Kluivert , Antonucci RW- Under CF- Schick Rumoured targets: CB- Leo Belardi , CDM- Sandro Tonali , RW- Diego Lainez Sell: Ideally no one, but Under seems like the next big sale. Karsdorp might be first to leave, however. I think we'll be able to hold onto everyone else though , if we so choose. ----------------------------------------------- So yeah, from what I can gather , it seems Monchi is trying to use the 1st and 3rd groups to improve the 2nd (prime) group gradually each season. Whether that be replacing a prime player with a better one , adding an additional piece to the group, or having youth step up and take a spot. (Under, Pellegrini, Cristante). The vets are of course stop-gaps to ensure we remain competitive and help build the culture and the kids develop. As we know, really good prime players are extremely expensive, so we either need to wait for good opportunities , or we need to plug holes with veterans, reclamation projects, and kids. For a club like Roma , finding a no-brainer upgrade at CB in his prime is very, very difficult. Especially when you consider how few quality CB's are actually out there right now. Most likely, we'll attempt to find another reclamation project or veteran with a contract winding down and a guy around the age 22-23. To me, when looking at all 3 groups , CB needs to addressed at every level. There's just no way a guy like Jesus should be part of the prime core if we want to keep progressing as a club. It's ridiculous. I think we need a better prime CB, a 22-23 year old CB ready to steal minutes, and another prospect.
Monchi doesn’t seem interested in dropping any real money on a CB, I expect another free/cheap gamble. I think he’ll focus on a winger and maybe a CM next summer.
I actually agree with Monchi on this. IMO, I think it's just the opposite, I think there are a lot of good CB and their MF make them look better or worse. IMO, it's no coincidence that our defense has started to look better when our MF started to play better.
Based on 3 windows? Give it time. You could've come to the same conclusion about DM before Nzonzi. It's about opportunity.
Didn't Monchi even say he prefers to spend more on positions further up the pitch? That being said he is an opportunist so who knows what will come along
Yep, but that doesn't mean he won't strengthen when an opportunity presents itself. The reason he spends more money higher up the pitch is because those players are worth more in the transfer market when it comes time to flip. (specifically the striker position , which is probably the most poorly evaluated positional market out there) Just take a look at his Sevilla days : In 07/08 he signed CB Aquivaldo Mosquera for 8 million. At the time, this was Sevilla's 3rd highest transfer ever. The next season, he signed Sebastien Squillaci for 6.5m , which would've been in the top 7 transfers ever for the club. 2010 , he bought CB Alexis , which was his 2nd highest transfer that year. 2011, Caceres was signed , the 3rd highest fee that year. 2012, Alberto Botia , again 3rd highest transfer that season 2014, Kolodziejczak was his second highest transfer 2015, Adil Rami was his 5th 2016, Lenglet 6th .....all CB's. There's quite a few expensive FB's/DM's in there as well. The reason Monchi spends more money higher up the pitch is because that's how you make the most money , and you need a constant supply of goals. Defenders (CB's specially) take longer to develop and aren't as marketable. That said, at Roma, he inherited Manolas , Fazio and Jesus. One can start for most clubs in Europe, one was a tremendous bargain with little resale value at this point , and the last one is on horrendous wages that are hard to move. Like I previously said, finding a no-brainer upgrade CB in his prime isn't an easy task. Most likely , anyone we get in his prime years is coming with some blemishes. I do believe, however, had Manolas actually gone to Russia , Monchi would've pulled the trigger on a fairly pricey CB by now.
Kostas Manolas is reportedly keen to stay at #ASRoma, so wants a new contract with an adjustment to his €36m release clause. https://t.co/LkFqe2iBV6 pic.twitter.com/6Z8MZdNcf6— Football Italia (@footballitalia) October 11, 2018 Better bump that clause to at least 50-60m , then.

But, I'm posting it just because I want it to happen so badly. I'm 95% sure he's going to Barca.
