The midfield and centre backs are very strong.

Kagawa is certainly going to be leaving and I don't see the problem with that. Gotze.

Raphael is seen as a left winger and you forgot Schmelzer.

Philipp too is very likely to leave in the summer. I agree, he is the player Favre probably should have tried more on the wing, but it's unlikely to happen.

Buying a 5th CB, only makes sense if Toprak is leaving in the summer, which seems very possible.

I don't expect any signings this January. I really worry how the team will deal with an injury to Reus or Sancho, or when the two are burnt out. I still think as good as Witsel has been, Weigl can cover.

Last season, I wouldn't have been happy if we had gotten Hazard for 15 million because of the way he missed his goal opportunities. He seemingly made a big step forward in his game (almost scoring as many goals already than in the complete last BL season), so I understand the interest in him. The question is always whether he can replicate the same for us.

But I, too, would have liked if Philipp got a few more chances in the positions that seem to suit him more (left wing or behind the striker). In the recent friendly he has shown what a powerful shot he has. It's the same reason he scored in the Cup game and against Stuttgart. With such a strong shot, you don't need the great assists and brilliant plays. We barely have any other players who are dangerous from outside the box. I had hoped, from his style of play, he could have been our Werner. With the lack of end product from Bruun Larsen and Pulisic, he should have been given a chance, although Guerreiro deserved his minutes towards the end as well.

"Thorgan is not sure what is the best for his career. He thinks that moving from Monchengladbach this winter wouldn't be the smartest move and he would rather wait for the summer. Rumors says that Atletico Madrid and Bayern are both interested in Thorgan Hazard." In this article they say that we are ready to pay for Hazard 42 million euros and Monchengladbach would let him go at that price.

If we get rid of Toprak this kid would be good solution for us. Not too expensive and very young. I think he would be 3rd or 4th solution on CB with Zagadou. From my point of view 2 of them won't be CB pair at any match soon but we need 4 competitive CBs

Sergio Gomez is showing us that he can be really good backup AM even though he is still 18(younger than Sancho). I hope Favre will use him a bit more in our games this spring. I would love to see at least Brandt instead of Hazard if we can't get Nicolas Pepe

Another twist in the Thorgan Hazard situation is that Chelsea apparently has matching rights in the event Gladbach sells him to another club. Since he would essentially replace Pulisic, it is understood that Chelsea would waive this right if he is sold to BVB. Not sure if this helps Dortmund get him for a good price relative to a different buying club, but it's an interesting minor angle.

Unsurprisingly, Reus got first place for Kicker's ranking for offensive midfielders. Havertz got second place which is quite the statement for him as well.
Sancho got ranked second place for the winger position. T. Hazard won that category.

Seems like Bayern is going for Rabiot. We should at least try with Havertz, which in my opinion is way better than Rabiot already

I don't think this is a twist. I think this was known. Thorgan is our no 1. target and the most likely playing coming in. I would be surprised if we didn't get him to be honest.
I saw the video you posted and it just confirms the problem. Havertz is best as a 10. The boy has all the potential in the world to become the best no 10 in the world, but we just don't need him, unless we risk converting him to an 8.

There is also a danger in stockpiling too many players, because they don't get enough game time and don't develop.

Just look at Sancho at City. If he stays there, he does not play and he does not develop. Foden is supposed to be just as talented as Sancho, but there levels are miles apart. Sancho is playing in huge matches against Bayern and will be a key player in the huge last 16 games against Tottenham. Foden is no where near that level.

Buying Havertz would just hurt him and not help as much. We will just stop him fulfilling his potential, like Chelsea have done to many young players and I believe despite the illness, Bayern did to Gotze.

I posted this in Other team news, but probably more applicable here. We just don't have the quality of the other top European teams and I am very impressed and happy with what we have done so far. We have wildly overachieved.

To be competing with these teams is a huge credit to Favre. It does worry me the season will fall apart, because with the quality I don't think results are sustainable. Bayern seem to have corrected their ship and are building a fearsome team for next season, arguably the best squad in the world again.

I can't even blame the board. They have tried to bring in top players like Werner, but have been rejected. There's no point spending for the sake of spending, but if one of their top targets is available in January, then we need to capitalise, because I don't see as coming close to Bayern next year.

There's also a saying, you lose someone the way you get them. Sancho left Watford when he saw a better career path at City, he left City when he saw a better career path at Dortmund. We need ton be prepared he will leave in the summer. Looking back at his development I would be shocked if he didn't try to force a move in the summer.

eaglespark I would normally agree with you about stacking AMs, but Havertz is covering 8 and 10 mostly(he is the guy who reminds me on Ballack,A LOT). And Reus is not only AM as well,he is doing great at wing too. With 2 of them we can play both 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1. Maybe I am being too stubborn but he would be my No1 option in this and in summer transfer window.

I agree. Honestly, when it comes to his ability, I rate him just as highly as you. He is probably the most talented German player since Gotze. The boy has it all.

If we sold Dahoud to get Havertz, that would be the only way the deal would make sense, then Havetz could cover 8 and 10. I think the team needs Reus' leadership in the centre.

Ultimately, though I don't think we even have a real choice in this. Much like Werner, Bayern have probably sewn this up.

If the 40 million for Hazard are true, I wonder what Havertz would cost. If Bayern don't have a serious need for his position, he might even get too expensive for them. 2 seasons ago, I thought Brandt was surely on his way to Bayern judging by how he and the clubs talked. That interest seems to have faded, so a lot can happen. Right now, Havertz would walk into our team but his best position isn't the one that is in serious need. 2 years from now, that could be a different story and we might have regrets. But I also think that we aren't in the driver's seat regarding that decision.

Saying a player can cover both no. 8 and no. 10 is fatuous. They are very different roles except . No. 8s are responsible for building up plays, no. 10 goals. No 8. job is to organize his teams offence, no. 10 has to disorganize the oppositions defence. When playing without the ball, no. 10 must be able to contain the opposition, no. 8 must be able to win back the ball.

This is why Götze has failed as a no. 8 and Gundogan took more than 6 months to be converted from a 10 to an 8.

He is playing at 10 in Leverkusen and on 8 for German national team. Trust me he can cover both :)

It seems a decent deal on paper. I don't know anything about him, but Toprak needs to go in the summer.

We need to try and get rid of Kagawa and Toljan too. Selling Kagawa especially, will free up some wages.

I expect no further signings. This is Pulisic' moment for me. We are going to need him desperately in the second half of the season. Larsen simply does not have the ability and Raphael is decent, but Pulisic is going to have to step up for us to win the league. I really hope he can do it.

    EDIT

Dahoud too. We need him to become the player he can be,

Speaking of Kagawa, a rumor out of France says that Bordeaux is looking to loan him for 6 months.

I would prefer a direct sell, but if no one wants to buy him, then a loan to get him off the books is the best that can done.

Gotze or Philipp can cover the 10. I think it's important the club keeps Gotze as long as he is happy. It's good to have a local boy in the squad and I was surprised to hear Sancho mention him as one of the three main players to help him. I think we all know Reus and Witsel are the leaders of the teams and instrumental in guiding the younger players. However, I was surprised to read Sancho place Gotze alongside those 3. Gotze certainly has a lot of experience and it's useful to have him in the dressing room.

I thought Chelsea would refuse to sell him due to the backlash from their fans, but I was very wrong. Everything points to Bayern getting Hudson-Odoi.

Werner, Hudson-Odoi and Pavard are all done or virtually done deals.

Thorgan Hazard to Dortmund seems to be pretty much done as well for around 40 million Euros.

    EDIT

40 millions Euros is a lot of money. We are going to have to get behind him and support him, but I have to wonder if the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

40M for Hazard is a waste of money. He costs more than Reus and Witsel combined.

The Reus comparison is not valid. That was over 7 years ago. The transfer market has changed a lot since then.

Still it seems far too much money to pay for Thorgan Hazard. It's really hard to get excited about this. It strikes me as a similar deal to Yarmolenko, Schurrle and Mkhitaryan.

Anyway it appears to have be done. So we have to accept it.

You see the trend then right? These flop acquisitions are getting more and more expensive. It's much cheaper to buy a bunch of youngsters and hope one of them succeed.

If this is the way to go then club expectations have to be simmered as well because you cannot expect the club to compete for titles on an annual basis by buying "a bunch of youngsters and hope one of them succeeds" due to the risk associated with that model. For every Dembele and Sancho you have a Mor and Isak. A club like Dortmund cannot always count on striking a jackpot with unproven kids and hope to be competing for titles every 5 years but need to take more risks and sign more proven players that will allow it to be competitive every year. Leipzig will not always function under their current conservative model but will start splashing money and ultimately leave Dortmund behind them as well.
