from this article https://quakesepicenter.com/2018/06...-to-answer-after-shambolic-season-progresses/ "With negotiations expected to be wrapped up this week, Vittese legend, Guram Kashia, is set to be San Jose’s first major signing of the summer. And it’s expected that other arrivals will soon follow." not familiar with him or his current team/league.....but is this really considered a "major signing"?
Great news about the CB, now just bring in a quality LB, a #10 from Argentina, a starting GK (hopefully better than Yarbrough but he'll do), and Bas Dost, and maybe we can compete with the top half of MLS teams. Uhhh.....yes?
Rumors are Everton are interested in Dost. Would be an awesome signing, especially since he is available on a free transfer, but, I doubt he is even on the Quakes radar. Would be great strike partner with fellow dutchmen Hoesen.
They tried Zura and he failed. Tresor Moreno was good but he left midseason and they didn’t stick with Geovani. The Uruguayan kid looks good but usually , the Quakes mostly go after Central Americans...
Id like to try a second Georgian so my wife can clean you guys all out when we open our Georgian cuisine food truck . I cannot be held responsible for the addictive tendencies that follow after your first bout with Khachapuri and beer. And my wife makes a meaaaan Khachapuri.
Um, one of them started in our last game (Quintana). Didn't do so well. I agree with you on the young and exciting talent, I just don't care where they are from (could be Japan, Australia, Chile, Nigeria). I would prefer American (Lima and Tarbell) and we have signed two Americans who are in the academy system.
Agree - you have to find the right players, and "the right players" could be from anywhere. However, the general trend in MLS is to mine Latin America, and the two teams who have bucked the trend and gone more European (Quakes and Rapids) have done very poorly. I don't care where the players are from, but seems to me we need quicker, technical players.
. . . and at a bargain price. Which means South America. But we need actual scouts to weed out the Edmundo Zuras of the world. I fear that is still not in the budget, which is why we're relying on Jesse's European (and Asian steppe) rolodex, as opposed to the scraps of paper in Doyle's wallet.
Some countries are bargain prices, not all. Plus, you have to compete with Euro scouts who have more money. Hence, MLS has spent more time looking at Central America in the past. I agree with your last paragraph which is that we need scout(s) in South America. Other teams such as Portland and Atlanta have successfully found players in South America. Of course, we had our own Argentina, but he didn't fit into Dom's system and was sent to Orlando.
Scouts from South America? Where would we find someone with a South American Rolodex? "Bruno Costa is the Head of Scouting for the San Jose Earthquakes. Costa joins the Quakes with extensive scouting experience, spending almost two decades in the Brazilian top flight (Série A) and with the Brazilian Football Confederation." (Emphasis mine). Last time I checked Brazil was in ... um... South America .
We are gonna have to make a move for GK.......either Marcinkowski or a trade. Taribelle is not MLS quality. Id call about any of Earl Edwards, MacMath, Irwin, or Seitz.
Not seeing much inspiring stuff from Russia or Saudi Arabia. home momentum is not to be underestimated, but nothing id splash cash on there.
No WC results in this thread please until 24 hours after the game ends. OWN(yewu)ED's post isn't really a spoiler, but it does remaind me to make the warning.
Thousands of people out at Avaya Stadium for Germany v Mexico! Has there been a larger opening weekend viewing party in the United States? #WeAreSanJose pic.twitter.com/HZwcv31rp0— Jared Shawlee (@JaredShawlee) June 17, 2018 Good thing the Quakes brain trust didn't actually pursue Carlos Vela, or Avaya Stadium might not be half-empty and getting out of the parking lot would be even more of a nightmare... brilliant!
That's been the biggest head-scratcher to me, going all the way back to Missael Espinoza (10 goals in 26 games - how we didn't sign him off loan was the first of so many mistakes). Anybody with half a brain should be able to understand that a Mexican player of any repute at all would be a huge boon for this club in terms of attendance, building interest, getting local press, etc. Why we have had only one in the past 22 years (I'm not counting Baca, since he was unknown in Mexico before coming to San Jose) is - I believe - a black mark on all of the GMs in San Jose's history. It seems so simple...
On top of that Vela has been one of the best players in MLS so far this season, certainly in the MVP discussion. But players like that cost money, Vela is making just over $6 million. Let's be real, Fischer barely spends that kind of money on his baseball team, even though MLB revenues are way higher, and his team gets the equivalent of welfare from the league. Only five players on the A's make $6 million or more. Yes, that's right now in 2018 not in 2005. And let's be honest, who would YOU rather spend $6 million on, MVP candidate Carlos Vela who would fill the stadium, or.... 37 year old relief pitcher Santiago Casilla (formerly known as Jairo Garcia before it came out that he lied about his age)?
