Buried at the bottom of the Mercury News article on Bingham: Reports in Uruguay say Penarol has agreed to a loan deal that sends center back Yeferson Quintana, 21, to San Jose. The 6-foot-3 defender would add perhaps the final missing piece to the roster ahead of training camp.
If the Quintana loan doesn't happen, or heck even if it does, the Crew would make a good trade partner if the Quakes are looking for a CB. They just re-signed Sauro, so their CB depth chart is five guys who could be starters: Jonathan Mensah (27) Josh Williams (29) Gaston Sauro (27) Alex Crognale (23) Lalas Abubakar (23) Abubakar is pretty much buried, he would be a good target.
New England Revolution’s Lee Nguyen requests offseason trade New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen asked the club to trade him earlier this offseason, sources confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday. The sources said that Nguyen, 31, asked for a trade before New England hired Brad Friedel as head coach and that his request for a move is motivated by a desire to continue his career elsewhere. The sources said that New England are reluctant to move the playmaker and that it’s no sure thing that he’ll be traded or transferred by the Revolution, who open camp on January 22. The sources did say that Chicago are among the teams that have spoken to New England about a potential deal for Nguyen, who has a guaranteed contract in 2018 and two club option years in 2019 and 2020. Nguyen, who was an MLS MVP finalist in 2014, joined the Revolution ahead of the 2012 season following two years in Vietnam, and has been one of the most productive attacking midfielders in MLS over the last four years. He finished 2017 with 11 goals and 15 assists in 31 regular season matches, giving him 42 goals and 40 assists in 128 regular season appearances since the start of 2014. Minnesota? Gee, I can't think of a team that needs a No. 10 and plays in a place with a huge Vietnamese/East Asian community.NOT ONE https://t.co/qW7TsbLIy2— Wes Burdine (@MnNiceFC) January 11, 2018 Philly? There aren’t many players the Union could sign who would absolve the team from its history of not scouting well in South America… but… Lee Nguyen might do it.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) January 11, 2018 Both those statements pretty much apply to us as well, don't they?
Forget Nguyen, this guy is available on a Bosman: https://globoesporte.globo.com/fute...anca-e-consegue-liberacao-do-fluminense.ghtml Gustavo Scarpo is 24 and lead Brazil's Serie A in assists the past 2 seasons. His highest transfer value according to transfermarkt was 8 million and we could get him for free if we pony up on salary. Total pipe dream, but he could probably be sold on for a profit quickly.
Nguyen has been really productive over the last 3 or 4 seasons. Last season was ridiculous - 11g, 15a. His price tag is $500k? Or is he looking for a big raise? If it's $500k it's about equivalent to Hyka. I like Hyka, but Nguyen would be a lot better and he'd be one guy who is a clear #10 if we ever actually used started to use one.
MLS video on potential Nguyen trade... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...-new-home-where-lee-nguyen-fits?autoplay=true The four teams mentioned so far are Chicago, Minnesota, Philly, and Montreal... no mention of the Quakes.
Some liberal Democratic friends have described certain US cities to me as shitholes. Jumping on a tangent. Exact words. Just saying.
RE: Yeferson Quintana loan. Peñarol is stipulating they be entitled to 30% of any future sale above the $1 million option payment. MLS could have a problem with this. Hopefully not, as the main reason to bring players like this to the league isn't because we can later sell them for a profit.
Might as well face it, there ARE dozens of shithole countries in the world, not everything is rainbows and unicorns.

Three reasons why free agent market has been slow this offseason Maybe teams don't want any of those old overpaid guys, I don't think I'd really want the Quakes to go after any of them...
