I realized nobody's talking about the Tour of Utah here. Quick recap so far:

Mon. Stage 1: Breakaway caught as normal leading to a sprint finish.
    1. Moreno Hofland - Belkin
    2. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop
    3. Andrea Palini - Lampre-Merida

Tue. Stage 2: Michael Sharr solos away on the big climb and stays away for the win by 2 seconds over an onrushing peleton. Gorgrous stage through Bryce Canyon country.
    1. Michael Scharr - BMC
    2. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop ( :02)
    3. Serghei Tvetcov - Jelly Belly ( :02)

Wed. Stage 3: Finished as a bunch sprint at the Larry H. Miller racetrack.
    1. Moreno Hofland - Belkin
    2. Andrea Palini - Lampre-Merida
    3. Eric Yuong - Optum

Thurs. Stage 4: Time for the big boys to come out to play as the stage finished on top of Powder Mountain, a climb equal to or harder than Pla d'Adet.
    1. Tom Danielson - Garmin-SHARP
    2. Ben Hermans - BMC ( :57)
    2. Chris Horner - Lampre-Merida ( :57)

    Current yellow jersey standings:
    1. Tom Danielson - Garmin-SHARP
    2. Ben Hermans - BMC ( :57)
    2. Chris Horner - Lampre-Merida ( :57)

    Sprint:
    1. Moreno Hofland - Belkin - 30
    2. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop - 29
    3. Andrea Palini - Lampre-Merida - 22

    KOM:
    Robin Carpenter - Hincapie - 30
    Joseph Rosskopf - Hincapie - 22
    Michael Scharr - BMC - 21

    Young Rider:
    Clement Chevrier - TREK
    Dion Smith - Hincapie ( :42)
    James Oram - bissel (1:09)

    Team:
    Lampre-Merida
    BMC ( :57)
    Hincapie (6:44)

There's also a online vote for the fan favorite category each day, with a special jersey for the winner to wear the next day. So far the winners have been:
Stage 1: Tyler Wren - Jamis-Hagen - Tour of Utah Legend
Stage 2: Jens Voight - TREK - Most Loved Veteran
Stage 3: Lucas Euser - UHC - Most Inspiring Comeback from Adversity
    Stage 4: Rob Squire - Jamis-Hagen - Best Domestique
    Stage 5: Most Promising Rookie
    Stage 6: Best Ambassador (Statesman)
Stage: 7 Best Overall Fan Favorite

Stage 5 actually starts in Evanston, Wyoming before heading back into Utah to end in Kamas. One Cat 2 KOM midway through the day before ending it what will probably be a sprint finish.

Stage 6 is the Queen stage, starting at Rice-Eccles Stadium (Salt Lake's MLS team's first home) and going over 3 KOMs (a 4, 3, and a 1) before finishing on the HC Snowbird climb. This will be the chance to wrest the jersey from Tommy D.

Stage 7 starts and ends in Park City as the racers head out in a loop around the area. A Cat 2 midway through the day leads to an HC summit just a few miles before the finish. If the race is close after Snowbird in stage 6 expect some attacking on the downhill to get the winning break.

As expected Stage 5 finished in a bunch sprint. As not expected the sprint competition got turned on its head. After yesterday's stage Andrea Palini, 3rd in the sprint competition, was ejected for hanging on the car (along with a Lampre and a Drapac rider, along with the team car they each hung on and the manager driving them) on the Powder Mt. climb yesterday. Then the current sprint jersey holder, Moreno Hofland, abandoned today. So Jure Kocjan became the sprint jersey leader mid-stage. The smaller teams ruled the day, keeping the ProTiour teams off the daily podium.

On top of everything else, there was this epic crash from Garmin-SHARP's Gavin Mannion. He got up and finished though.

    Stage 5 results:
    1. Eric Young - Optum
    2. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop
    3. Kiel Reijnen - UHC

Because of the bunch sprint there were no changes to the standings in anything but the sprinter's jersey:
    1. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop - 41
    2. Eric Young - Optum - 32
    3. Kiel Reijnen - UHC - 26

And the fan favorite jersey today, for Most Promising Rookie, went to Dion Smith of Hincapie. Most aggressive went to Jeff Louder of UHC.

BMC had a good strategy in Stage 6, sending Cadel Evans up the road to force Gamin to chance, hoping to wear them out to let Hermans get a chance to attack Tommy D on the final climb. At one point Evans got enough time to be the virtual yellow jersey which burned Garmin down to Gaimon and Acevedo (who had dropped back from the break) to escort Tommy D into the final climb. In the end BMC had to be satisfied with the stage win as Danielson was too strong, dropping Hermans on the climb and closing to within 14 second of Evans at the finish line. Horner stayed right with him while Kelderman in 4th was able to attack and get 7 seconds back at the end.

    Stage 6 Results:
    1. Cadel Evans - BMC
    2. Joseph Rosskopf - Hincapie ( :03)
    3. Riccardo Zoidl - TREK ( :07)

    GC standings:
    1. Tom Danielson - Garmin-SHARP
    2. Chris Horner - Lampre-Merida ( :57)
    3. Ben Hermans - BMC (1:26)

    Sprint:
    1. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop - 41
    2. Kiel Reijnen - UHC - 32
    3. Michael Scharr - BMC - 21

    KOM:
    1. Joseph Rosskopf - Hincapie - 40
    2. Robin Carpenter - Hincapie - 38
    3. Jens Voight - TREK - 28

    Young Rider:
    1. Clement Chevrier - TREK
    2. Dylan Theuns - BMC (1:22)
    3. James Oram - Bissel (8:32)

    Team:
    Lampre-Merida
    BMC (2:00)
    TREK (10:57)

Most aggressive and fan favorite have not yet been posted.

Its going to take some amazing riding to catch Tommy D tomorrow. There is a large climb shortly before the finish but with almost a minute lead over Horner, and having yet to be dropped by Horner, its unlikely that that there will be a strong enough break to make the time back. Of course other teams probably felt the same thing before Talansky surprised everyone in the final day of the Dauphine.

Is NBC Sports airing this, or is it just on the web?

National contract with Fox Sports, so its airing live on the regional FOX sports networks, if there isn't a local event airing instead (here in Denver we got the first 6 stages live, but tomorrow's stage will be delayed 3 hours due to a Rockies game).

Empire Pass separated the cream of the crop from the rest of the race in Stage 7. Kelderman, Anacona, Horner, and race leader Tommy D (places 5, 4, 3, and 1) broke away and led the race over the top with a good distance on everyone other than 6th placed Cadel Evans and Optum's Carter Jones which crested just 10 seconds behind. Evans bombed down the decent and joined onto the leaders group with about 3K to go, given a front group of 5 all in the top 6 of the race (just missing 3rd placed Ben Hermans). Tommy D led the group into the final finishing straight and then pulled off to let the other 4 fight for the sprint win. Evans came around the outside and easily pulled away from the win for back-to-back stage wins. Tommy D gets back to back Tour of Utah wins. Go Argyle!

    Stage 7 results:
    1. Cadel Evans - BMC
    2. Wilco Kelderman - Belkin
    3. Winner Anaconda - Lampre-Merida

    Final GC:
    1. Tom Danielson - Garmin-SHARP (6:18:04)
    2. Chris Horner - Lampre-Merida (+:52)
    3. Winner Anaconda - Lampre-Merida (+1:43)

    Team:
    1. Lampre-Merida (19:03:59)
    2. BMC (+2:08)
    3. TREK (+17:32)

    Sprint:
    1. Jure Kocjan - SmartStop - 46
    2. Kiel Reijnen - UHC - 35
    3. Michael Scharr - BMC - 21

    KOM:
    1. Joseph Rosskopf - Hincapie - 50
    2. Robin Carpenter - Hincapie - 38
    3. Tom Danielson - Garmin-SHARP - 33

    Young Rider:
    1. Dylan Theuns - BMC (6:28:07)
    2. Clement Chevrier - TREK (+:14s)
    3. James Oram - Bissel (+16:15)

Most Aggressive: Winner Anaconda - Lampre-Merida
Best Overall Fan Favorite: Dion Smith - Hincapie

Now on to my favorite race on the calendar, the USA Pro Challenge starting a week from tomorrow in Aspen.

Winner Anaconda has to be one of the best names evar.

I'm surprised to see that Bubble Boy is still racing. I thought he'd retired. Is he on Garmin's Vuelta squad?

I'm pretty sure he and Acevedo will be leading the Colorado squad next week. Its Garmin's home race (they're based in Boulder) and Tommy D was 3rd and Acevedo (racing for the Colombian team) was 4th last year.
