Given most games are qualifiers and played against teams in the same region, I think it is only a true valid comparison to compare by region.

I thought I would add this before the WC as I suspect a few retirements afterwards, active players in green.

Lists for South America and Europe.

Some general comments are there were big moves in terms of places for Messi and Neymar in SA and Ronaldo is edging ever closer to Puskas.

EDIT: Appears I missed a few recent goals for Lewandowski, he is on 55 now.

Along side now. You'll get pretty short odds on him moving ahead before the end of the group stage.

    Interesting podiums for midfield players:

    Europe - 1 - Bobby Charlton, 2 - Hristo Bonev, 3 - Michael Ballack

South America (a bit more arguable in terms of defining AM or forward, and because each of these played as definite forwards a fairly significant amount for their NTs anyway too) - 1 - Zico, 2 - Rivaldo, 3 - Diego Maradona
