I wondered where all these historical revisionist Crew fans came from. Now I know. Blame the PSV regime. Must have been something in the beer.
My used ticket stub to this game is on the tack board in my office. Still my favorite match. Only reason it didn’t make top 20 events in Crew history according to current management is that the (probably exaggerated) official attendance was 2105.
Re: Black Monday, and letting Guillermo go, the Crew never again qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League, if I recall correctly.
It's an example of how much the league has changed. That match took place AFTER MLS Cup, on October 25. Now, October 25 isn't even into the postseason yet.
Do you remember Sigi’s (justified) sour grapes after the game, complaining that the Galaxy didn’t even have time to celebrate winning MLS Cup before the Open Cup final?
Yes. Actually, after looking it up, it was October 24th, not the 25th. Which was a Thursday night. And the Galaxy did have a disadvantage in that match. They had just played MLS Cup, which went to extra time, four days earlier, so they had some tired legs. Playing against a rested opponent who had an extra week to prepare for them. Not that it’s an excuse. Wanna be a championship level team? That means extra games and fixture congestion. Deal with it.
Martino is getting a Mike Clark finger in the eye for his troubles. Maybe they'll match up on Sunday and Kyle can get him back.
On this day in 2015 I tailgated for hours with several of my closest friends and 26 seconds into the game Steve Clark shit all over my heart and I wished that I was drinking something harder.
I was pregnant. Therefore, I was terribly sober during that whole experience. I want to cry now. Also, I will never understand what Crew fans saw in Clark. This shit game always gets me in a fight on these boards, usually with Archer, so just leave my post be in the sadness.
He would go over to the Nordecke and do the "YES YES YES" after wins. Seems like a generally good guy too. But he ruined MLS Cup for us.
As bad as that moment was, that was not the reason we lost. Also, in 15 years we will all look back with great joy on this date.
I had a bunch of friends over and we had a big Super Bowl-esque spread going. I was literally loading up on a big plate of meatballs when I saw Clark from the corner of my eye make the biggest mistake of his career. Not even a plate of meatballs can fill the whole in my soul that day.
