Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am You ask, and Wiki delivers: "Merseyside (pronounced /ˈmɜrzisaɪd/) is a metropolitan county in North West England, with a population of 1,365,900. Taking its name from the River Mersey, Merseyside came into existence as a metropolitan county in 1974, after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972, and the county consists of five metropolitan boroughs adjoining the Mersey Estuary, including the City of Liverpool. Merseyside County Council was abolished in 1986, and so its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now effectively unitary authorities. However, the metropolitan county continues to exist in law and as a geographic frame of reference. Merseyside is divided into two parts by the Mersey Estuary: the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral is located to the west of the estuary on the Wirral Peninsula; the rest of the county is located on the eastern side of the estuary. The eastern boroughs of Merseyside border Lancashire to the north and Greater Manchester to the east, and both parts of Merseyside, west and east of the estuary, border Cheshire to the south. The territory comprising the county of Merseyside previously consisted of the county boroughs of Birkenhead, Wallasey, Liverpool, Bootle, Southport and St Helens. Birkenhead and Wallasey were part of the county of Cheshire, whilst Liverpool, Bootle, Formby Southport and St Helens were part of the county of Lancashire." And, just in case you didn't know, Everton FC play in Liverpool.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am That's exactly how I feel whenever the Nat's are playing an important match. Couldn't sit down during the Brazil match last summer. Can't say that club ball has ever held me that enthralled. I guess my team hasn't found me yet. Flu-like symptoms.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am It's like the county that Liverpool, the city, is in. On this picture - inside the black lines is Merseyside county (dont worry bout the narrower lines inside thats more complicated!): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/4/45/20071015121447!Merseyside_outline_map_with_UK.png Kinda like states in the US I guess, but on a much, much smaller scale.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Nothing to say here, just doing my part to extend the record for most pre-kickoff posts for a YA game thread, ever. Almost time for the East Coast to go to sleep, I'm pumped ..........
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am One last post before I sleep for anyone who cares A little bit more about the Merseyside Derby and relationship between Everton and Liverpool: http://www.toffeeweb.com/club/folklore/derby.asp It talks about the "friendly derby" which was pretty unique, but over the last 10 to 15 years it has descended to bitterness and hatred, just like most others. And just incase you never realised how close the stadiums were: http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/liverpoolecho/nov2008/3/8/AA341AB8-C4E7-A530-95975100E634ECEC.jpg Like 5 minute walk or so.Haha.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am OK, I'm gonna sleep through it, but I'd like to ask no one to post any spoilers in this thread, OK?
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Going to bed soon so I can wake up at 4:30 in the morning. And setting the DVR as well...just in case....
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Thanks - I should have googled but I appreciate the help. The population is - I live in Orange County, California, population about 3 million. Amazing to think 2 or more top pro soccer teams could be housed here based on comparative population. Thanks - I had no idea the stadiums were so close. That picture is amazing. What's the big park in between?
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am I'm on the West Coast. All I know is my DVR better work like it (almost) always does (98% of the time). COYB.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am And that is amazing how close the stadiums are. I had no idea.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am I'm totally with ya. Same plan. I don't think I'll have any problem jumping out of bed to salivate over the pregame. Man, this is fun. This really is a great situation for Donovan. Comes into the squad hit with injuries, plays well, is comfortable enough to be confident and the injured start to come back to push him further with competition for places. Btw, Hudson Rye is an excellent Big Soccer-compatible beverage.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Goodnight my fellow BSrs, I'll catch you in the morning. COYB
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Good night John Boy. Oh man, that was cheesy.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Anyone else just saying eff it and staying up?
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am That's dedication trick! I will just avoid all spoilers and watch TiVo whenever I get up. This is gonna be like Xmas all over again! my boys v. Donovan and Timmay in a a derby no less. Anything less than an epic clash will be disappointing! Looking for a Reds win and a solid showing by LD, TH.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am I'm having second thoughts.... It's so hard here in Vegas with the west coast time, but I'm still only 20, I think my body will hold up!
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Dude, I tried to force myself to sleep, and it doesn't look like it's happening for me. F#$% it, I'll probably be staying up.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am I got lucky a took a nap from 9-12 so I'm good to go. I might need a pick-me-up to stay up for the Hull match though.
Re: Donovan doesn't walk alone: Merseyside Derby 2/6, 7:45am Cocaine is always good. Don't forget about Adu and Eddie, they'll be kicking off about that time I think.
