Time to Give Venezuela the Respect It's Earned

Last night FC Caracas beat San Lorenzo 2-0. I know its just the first leg of the tie but considering that Caracas beat River Plate last year it continues a run of impressive results.
This combined with a decent run of national teams results and a great Copa America shows that Venezuelan futbol continues to grow.
But I don't see Venezuela getting the respect it deserves. I can't get scores from their championship. I rarely see any news about Venezulean soccer on Anglo or Spanish TV despite the fact that Venezuelan futbol is now comparable to every country on the continent except Brazil and Argentina.
I know Venezuela is called "el pais de beisbol" but that doesn't mean you can't play soccer also.
    What's happening here?

    Just one correction.
I believe the Caracas win was in group play.
    Still an important win.

Re: Time to Give Venezuela the Respect It's Earned

well, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here. You had a very easy group in the Copa America and were playing home. And then you got killed in the quarterfinals 4-1 by uruguay. Caracas was the first team to make it out of the group stage in the new set up from Venezuela. They had a great first game this year to start off as well, but that is the only team from Venezuela making noise.

Union Maracaibo finished dead last in their group drawing 2 games and losing 4. They lost 4-2 at home and 2-1 away to Parana (team from Brasil that is now in the second division). Their 2 draws came against Real potosi, a team from Bolivia. Against Flamengo they lost 3-1 and 2-1. Deportivo Tachira lost 2-1 and 2-0 in the qualifying round against Dep. Tolima of Colombia. This year Mineiros got eliminated in the qualifying round against Arsenal, losing 2-0 and then 3-2 on aggregate.

In the 2007 Copa Sudamericana, neither Venezuelan team could make it out of the Venezuela/Ecuador preliminary rounds, and neither in the 2006 out of the Venezuela.Colombia preliminary rounds. Both including some aggregates that were very unkind (Carabobo Fc lost 6-1 aggregate in '07 and 5-0 aggregate in '06)

And before you talk about the qualifying, you've beaten Ecuador and Bolivia, the only two nations that have about as little footballing history as Venezuela, while losing against Colombia (at home) and Argentina (also at home)

Re: Time to Give Venezuela the Respect It's Earned

    Before I start,
its difficult to get scores and highlights from Venezuelan soccer because the sports channels and the big TV stations in Venezuela don't support soccer at all, but they will do anything to show a baseball game.

<Bosterosoy> You have some descent points, but its obvious that you are saying 1/2 truths to make a point

    - You had a very easy group in the Copa America and were playing home. And then you got killed in the quarterfinals 4-1 by uruguay.
Yes, just like any other team that has hosted Copa America.
The game that Uruguay won was actually a close game that Uruguay went up in the scoreboard by an amazing goal from Garcia who happens to be the last person you think of when it comes to scoring impressive goals.

    - Caracas was the first team to make it out of the group stage in the new set up from Venezuela.
Wrong, Minerven (93), Estudiantes (99), Tachira (2002) got to quarterfinals.
Tachira got to quarterfinals as the only undefeated team out of the 16 teams that were playing.

    - (CaracasFC) They had a great first game this year to start off as well, but that is the only team from Venezuela making noise.
You forgot that UA-Maracaibo beat Velez 4-2 and beat Pumas in 1-0 and 3-1?

    - This year Mineiros got eliminated in the qualifying round against Arsenal, losing 2-0 and then 3-2 on aggregate.
Good job avoiding to mention that Mineros won 2-1 the 2nd game.

    - In the 2007 Copa Sudamericana, neither Venezuelan team could make it out of the Venezuela/Ecuador preliminary rounds
Venezuela send the 4th & 5th team to Copa Sudamericana,
unlike all the other countries that send their best teams

    - And before you talk about the qualifying, you've beaten Ecuador and Bolivia, the only two nations that have about as little footballing history as Venezuela, while losing against Colombia (at home) and Argentina (also at home)
Both games against Colombia and Argentina were very close games

Why don't you mention the record between Venezuela and argentinian teams in the last 6 years?

    Venezuela: 5-4–2
    Argentina: 2–4-5

    Caracas 2-0 San Lorenzo
    Mineros 2-1 Arsenal
    Arsenal 1-0 Mineros
Caracas 3-1 River (played in Colombia)
    River 0-1 Caracas
    Caracas 1-1 Banfield
    Banfield 3-1 Caracas
    UAM 4-3 Velez
    Velez 1-1 UAM
    Tachira 0-0 River
    River 2-2 Tachira

Danillo-25, also with all the stuff your wrote, it still doesn't prove the fact that I was trying to disprove, that hummstein said that
I don't think they are near Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico or Colombia along with Brasil and Argentina

Re: Time to Give Venezuela the Respect It's Earned

Also, if we go back as far as you've stated, we can also include the incredible Tachira team of 2005 that won 1 game, lost 5 and had 17 goals scored against them. There only win against a team form Brasil's second division and then lsot to that same team 6-0. And the 2005 Caracas that also finished dead last in their group. And the Tachira of 2001 that lost 5 games, got a draw against Penarol and had 12 goals against and 3 in favor.

    Also,
So in 15 years, 4 teams made the round of 16 and 1 made the quarterfinals. Yes that definitely shows that Venezuela is up there with the likes of Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile and Mexico (not including Brasil and Argentina)
Also, have you noticed that you had the benefit of playing River Plate for 4 of those games? That's a team that is known for losing in style and choking all the time in international tournaments.

    Are you sure?
Looks at this article from 2007 (before Uruguay beat us a couple of times)

Watching the build up to the Maracaibo - Boca Match.
Regardless of the final outcome --the atmosphere is electric.
Definitely what you'd expect in a place that cares about futbol.

that's great and everything but that statement I was referring to club teams and club level the poster said that only brasil and argentina were ahead of Venezuela, putting them on the same page as Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico, and Colombia, which I think is a joke on the club level and for some of those countries on the national team level as well

"Origin" is different than "nationality".
Lancken does sounds more English than Spanish, hence why I asked (I am well aware that he's Venezuelan, passport-wise).

    :: 22 Feb 2008
    Balonazos.com.-

    Llegamos a cinco empates...
