That Reyna story sure isn’t a happy one, but we’ll probably have a player with the talent and maturity of Pulisic / McKennie.

Those who complain about USSF/MLS conflict of interest please refer to CONCACAF/CPL.

As long as he plays for the USA. No parent should ever have to bury a child, which goes without saying, but going back to his playing days, I have never thought much of Claudio Reyna's commitment to the US. He was always talented, but seemed to take much more interest when he was playing for whatever Euro club than for the US. The path he has set his son upon only reinforces this for me. If his kid is as good as he is supposed to be, I would not be shocked to see him suit up for Portugal instead.

Reyna also got more crap from his various managers about taking Nats callups than any other two Nats players combined*. Remember, this was back in the day before the U.S. was respected as a "ral" team and, to be fair, USSF didn't totally respect the FIFA schedule when scheduling Nats matches. Many times Reyna was threatened with losing playing time if he took a (in his manager's view) meaningless callup over staying and playing for his club.

    * - At least that's how I remember it, it may be that other player's issues weren't as publicized as Reyna's.

I don't disagree. As I recall, there was less than a handful of European based players in that infamous 98 team where Reyna was so completely ineffective. I always felt that it was when he was out injured and the US beat Portugal without him that he finally switched on for his country. I don't know that it was a coincidence that the 02 team was split pretty evenly between Euros and MLS. I also think the for once unbroken John O'Brien outplayed him that tournament.

This is absolutely correct. If anything Claudio paid a price as a RESULT of his commitment to the USMNT. Rangers moved him to Fullback after being called up for crying out loud....
