...and because the collective forum spends too much time bitching about Rooney and Audi Field and the FO, there's thread. Shame. What: DC United @ RSL Where: Salt Lake City, Utah When: Saturday, May 12, 2100 EDT Why: Because it's on the schedule How (to watch): NC8/CW Richmond Steve Goff's probable starting lineup: GK Steve Clark; Ds Nick DeLeon, Steve Birnbaum, Frederic Brillant, Joseph Mora; MFs Zoltan Stieber, Chris Durkin, Ulises Segura, Luciano Acosta, Yamil Asad; F Darren Mattocks.
We all know what’s going to happen. I can hear Ben saying how much he likes the group and that they’re still fine. He saw a lot of good stuff out there and a few things go our way and we win. We worked on those things during the break but they just didn’t click. The group is still gelling.
DCU: 1 RSL: 1 Ours will come late. By then the in-game portion of this thread will be 3 pages of doom Only a great save will stop us from winning.
If Goff's lineup is correct, Ben still thinks Stieber and Arriola share a place on the starting team. Play them both, even if that moves Asad inside with Acosta and puts Segura on the bench. Or bench Nicky and play a 3-2-4-1 with Segura and Durkin behind Stieber, Arriola, Acosta and Asad. And I would like to see a bit of Kelly at striker. Why obsess over the fact that his scoring was in our "second division?" Didn't Bradley Wright-Phillips come from the second or third tier of English soccer?
He seemed to have a good thing going with Mullins, and Stieber with Mattocks, so it makes sense to start one pair and bring another in. But with Stieber's free kicks and service, it's hard to say it ever makes sense to not have him on the field. Both Arriola and Mullins appear to have lost the plot - neither can figure out how to get involved. Stieber's not a great match for Acosta inside, and he ought to be playing left wing, where we apparently have to play Asad, inverted, or the universe will implode. What a freaking mess.
Some how we need Stieber and Acosta on the field at the same time. Our "Plan A" (although calling what we do a "plan" is stretching it) is just get the ball to Acosta for ... something. But we also need a Plan B. Plainly thats Stieber.
More likely that the matches are so infrequent and forgettable that they have the same impact as pissing in the ocean. James
I'm pretty much broken after Philly. Played off the pitch by that shit heap, I just can't get up for this one. I'm going out tonight, hopefully I'll come home to a win, and more importantly to me, a well played match. I give it a 10% chance.
2-0 to the Madrid posers. DC has looked pretty impotent and I don’t see them shaking off those cobwebs out in dusty old Utah.
I just hope that Ben has them prepared to play for a win all 90 minutes. A road draw is a decent result for a team that's tracking or near playoff position. But we've already got a lot of points to make up. And playing a western conference team means an RSL win doesn't hurt in the standings. So I hope that if it's tied late in the second half DC plays like it's the home team and presses hard for the win.
