needed a new one of these too. http://www1.skysports.com/football/...y-a-manchester-united-legend-says-david-moyes discuss
Not a defense. Just pointing out what he accomplished this week. Ronaldo would probably be on what, 330 at least. Ruud I think had one more good season in him before his body broke down, and he also didn't fit the style of play, so I do wonder how many matches he would of had from the 06/07 season on.
Not being in peak physical condition or fitting the style of play has not stopped Rooney from playing.
you keep insisting his body broke down and yet he played on for quite a while and scored regularly post United aside from that he had two major knee injuries here and still managed roughly 3 in 4. plus what Teso said. Rooney isn't any model of fitness either
He played 47 matches in 06/07, and 33 in 07/08. The next time he played 30 plus matches was his final season in 11/12. I am not making this up....
33 in 92. 23 in 80 after 08/09. There is little chance that he would have still been here playing past 08/09 and even if he scored just as many goals, he wouldn't have broken the record. He had 86 club goals the rest of his career after he left, 53 of which came in his first two seasons. He needed 14 more. I loved Ruud, but he left at the right time. I have come to terms with that.
Rooney has the potential to be a top scorer solely because he arrived when he was still a teenager and played for the club for 10+ years. There were very little strikers that stayed at the club for such a long time, since Chalton and Law, who are still at the top. I'm perhaps missing someone, but there definitely weren't many.
Yeah, some guy named Ole. Mark Hughes played exactly 10 seasons for us during his two stints. Brian McClair was here for 11 seasons. I think that is the list.
Rooney will be in the top 10 for appearances next season and he will be the only striker in the list. At the moment he is only behind those two and McClair played in midfield in his later years. In terms of goals he is only behind Law (who played less games) and Charlton (who was not a striker).
Rooney gets his goals. For all our catering to him, our arguments about his fitness, my and other's wishes that he wasn't here anymore, or not on this wage - he got his goals. That is the truth. He will never get the love of the legends. Not by the rank and file fans here. He will have his numbers, but he has shit on this club too many times for anyone to think of him as a legend.
After a certain number of years, any talented player could be a top scorer, honestly. You take a kid that was 18 or whatever Rooney was, and it will happen.
Let's be fair to amdrag, Rooney does put up good numbers and consistently. The problem is a decent #9 who doesn't want to play there. And playing him anywhere else is at the cost of making the team significantly worse.
His goal scoring, on a per season basis, could be a lot better. There are far too many season where he finishes in the teens: 17, 19, 23, 18, 20, 34, 16, 34, 16, 15
Let's look at the seasons where he played #9 almost exclusively and those are the two 34 seasons. Decent #9 no doubt.
I know he isn't the most creative, but his assist numbers have been good during his time here as well. He has averaged more then 30 goals/assists during his time here. That is production.
