    Inconceivable!

    Close: it's Leo.

I'll have you know that I didn't just eat tofu! But I did the night before last, and it was delicious.

When I was 15, my family went on a vacation to Spain. My brother and I were on our own one afternoon when we stumbled across a small kiosk selling, among other things, a Tracy Lords porno video. We bought it. For the remainder of the vacation, we kept it carefully hidden from our parents in our suitcase, always fretting that they would find it. We also worried that customs would uncover it. And what would happen if they did? Would they simply humiliate my brother and I in front of our folks? Would they confiscate it because she may have been underage when she made it? The end of the vacation was tense, but alas, we arrived at home without the video being discovered.

Then, when our parents were alseep, we popped it into the VCR. That's when we learned that the US and Europe used different VCR technology.

    Tofu is great.

    I don't eat animals either.

    Peta sucks.

Absolutely! We eat it a couple of times a week. It's all in the preparation.

Speaking of conservative vegetarians, have you read Matthew Scully's Dominion?

    Never read it.

There are many "conservative' vegetarians, it's a lifestyle choice not a partisan choice.

I am concerned about the healthiness of a macrobiotic diet. I do eat cheese and other things but I also eat ALOT of soy and veggie burgers and veggie chick patties and veggie buffalo wings. I've read that soy can inhibit certain vitamins going into your body.

I generally like all the vegetarian meat substitue brands - morningstar, gardenburger, boca, etc - but I don't like Amy's brand. The food is good, but the prices are outrageous so I personally boycott it even though I'm a rich republican nazi.

Actually I like it raw too. I like it fried, steamed, baked - doesn't matter to me.

I really like the steak style tofu and even the chinese flavored tofu.

    Best sushi? Tofu and avacado.

I don't care how it's prepared, I like it anyway I've had it.

Scully was one of Bush's former speechwriters. It's a terrific book--probably the best I've ever read on the issue, in fact.

I agree, actually. VegNews noted that a survey of vegetarians revealed that half were Republican/conservative. I find that number a little hard to swallow--half seems rather high--but I don't doubt that many vegetarians are also politically conservative.

This may be true, but the implication is a little misleading: many vitamins/minerals/nutrients "counteract" one another. For instance, recent, large-scale studies have shown animal protein inhibits the body's ability to absorb calcium. Milk may contain a lot of calcium, but the body can't do much with it. Among other findings, societies in which the diet doesn't include much dairy (as in parts of Asia) have much lower rates of bone breakage than do societies that consume dairy.

In other words, I wouldn't worry about it unless you ate a fair amount of soy in every meal.

Yeah, Amy's costs too much and isn't even that great, although I like some of the burritos. Generally, other brands taste better.

The veggie buffalo wings you metion above are fantastic. We try to limit how much of that stuff we eat--as you know, just because it's vegetarian doesn't mean it's not junk food--but we do like it. A lot.

Have you ever had vegan jerky? This stuff is fantastic.

What are these? Are they types of pre-baked tofu?

I've had it in a handful of bland dishes--chunks of tofu plopped in a spaghetti sauce, for instance--in which it doesn't do much for me. Otherwise, I like it in just about anything. I can't even imagine eating Thai food with anything other than tofu.

Artisinal tofus are available in Japan. The flavors vary greatly, and some supposedly taste like, for example, a really pungent blue cheese. I'd love to try such tofu, but it's (apparently) not available in the states.

I had the vegan jerky once, I liked it ok my girlfriend did not like it at all.

The Buffallo wings are junk food but they are great, especially with hot sauce. I pretty much like all of it except for the veggie burgers that are mushroom based. I can't stand mushrooms.

I'm not vegan but I wish I was. It seems you have to go way out of your way to be a vegan. You can't get 100% vegan products just by going to your local grocer or restaurant or retail clothier.

Soccer balls are leather, as are my adidas shoes.

    It's impossible.

The first time my wife and I went to a regular grocery store after we went vegan, it was a rather heart-breaking experience: nearly everything I wanted had at least trace amounts of milk proteins, egg whites, or whey. The next week, we tried Whole Foods, and the experience was totally different. Furthermore, the few vegan items carried at the regular grocery store were actually cheaper (!) at Whole Foods.

Soccer balls are actually made of synthetic materials. As far as Adidas goes, I can't say, although I know that most (if not all) running shoes are entirely non-leather.

Don't be confused Bojendyk... I never mix subjects so let's stay with the abortion issue okay? I doubt you can handle a good beatdown on the validity of both the Death Penalty and the Just War theory... besides I like you and am genuinely concerned about your political misunderstanding...

Suggest you read a bit from here... I am not sure how far the Vatican is prepared to go with its liberal politicians who support the abortion of the unborn but then in hypocrisy attempt to say they are still Catholic... I do know, however, Pope Benedict XVI's position on the matter and I do expect him to act.

Just because Ted and bo have turned turned this thread into a veggie-homo lovefest, I'm now going to mock the ham in my sandwhich while making lunch.

WHO'S ON TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN, BITCH!?!?!?!?!?

Damn. I was waiting for his treatise on the difference between an $8.4 trillion debt, and the $300 mil deficit. That would have been an instant classic.

Depends on where you live. Years of "endangered species protection" have enabled the mountain lion to return to the top of the food chain in some suburbs out west.

I heard he turned into a tofu eating sissy.

Then he moved to Calcutta to be with all the other sissies who watch Bollywood films.

[ice cube]Bow down - I'm not a hater like you/so bow down to a player that is greater than you[/ice cube]

Sorry I've decided to live a healthier lifestyle than you. My girlfriend is hot so the homo thing doesn't apply. Though I think she may be cheating on me.

I'd link you to her myspace but I know I'll just end up getting made fun of for having one myself.

Though I do need someone to find out if she's cheating. Smiley are you in for some internet recon work?
